All of the HP Laptops (non clearance) had £50 off in my local store. Taking the already lowest price HP laptop, the G7091 down from £379.99 to £329.99. Price that seriously competes with the £299.99 Fujitsu which is inferior in terms of specs and quality.

This seems to be instore only, as the website adds VAT when you checkout & takes the total to £382.48.
#3
It's the business site. All prices exclude VAT. Not a bargain at £382.48!

Apparently this was advertised in The Sun newspaper today as well...

Don't know if it's still going on, but last weekend at least there was a laptop with similar spec, same price, except with 3GB of RAM- on offer at the front of my store (Grimsby).

Seems a tad expensive for an older dual core? I would have expected a core2duo at this price range:?

Why do 99% of laptops come with an operating system at least 50% of people will want to change.

Why must a laptop come bundled with an OS?

50% ??? In your dreams!
90% won't know there is a choice, let alone want to change it!

Why?... because most people don't want to spend several hours setting up an OS and configuring it, getting hold of drivers and making sure it runs well, they want to turn it on and it works (not that well,I know - but most people don't want to do more than that.)

Ubuntu configures automatically, and takes about 20-25 minutes from the live disk you can try it with before you install to see if you like it, even on pretty obscure set ups (it saw and configured 4x xeons and my JBOD RAID set up - which is not really common).

I only know one person who still uses Vista (which came installed on her laptop).

Additionally, courts in France and Italy have permitted buyers to sue Acer and HP for the value of the preinstalled windows software they did not want. An OS is an obviously essential but optional addition, where there should be a freedom of choice.

That's the argument for Linux... and I might even be with you on some of it, but it is barely even relevant to what you previously said.

Yaawnn...

Why do 50% of linux anoraks feel the need to write posts that 99% of people will want to ignore?

You are just annoyed we can afford these anoraks and far better computers by not paying money for second rate operating systems.

So give a relevant example of what you say -
"Why do 99% of laptops come with an operating system at least 50% of people will want to change."

Where are these 50% of (as near as makes no difference) laptop users that want to change?
If is is as easy to change as you reckon, (and it is not that easy, I have done a fair bit of playing around on a couple of Linux distributions, most notably and recently Ubuntu) where are all these Linux users?
I can put Linux on one of my machines, I even have a copy within 3 feet of where I am sitting, but I don't bother, I use software that has NO Linux equivalent, and I have better things to do than set up Emulators to hopefully run that software.

Ubuntu is fine, it is also cheap, but love it or hate it it is NOT what people want. The rights or wrongs of that are another issue, and I am not going to argue that, as I am just not interested.

Where are the people on this thread (that are clearly interested in Laptops) who are interested in Linux ?

I'll ask the question to them too.....

Laptop buyers: Do you want a laptop with Linux instead of Windows?

I don't expect we will be killed in the rush!
#18
I sell 2 to 3 laptops a week, the normal/average person wants Windows XP or Vista, simple as that. I mention Linux etc, but they simply do not want it.

99% of linux users feel the need to push it, 99% of Windows users are happy to use Windows and not feel the need to push it on other people.

Out of all the people I know with a recent laptop, a massive 0% have changed their operating system. Just face it, Vista is better than Ubuntu (at the moment). I am all for open source initiatives but at the moment Ubuntu does not come close to the functionality of Windows. This is mainly due to all the support that Microsoft has on 3rd party titles on Windows (Games, Office, Adobe Products).

hmmm.....1.86 GHz, Level 2 cache 1 MB ??

i can get a furhter 15% staff discount off this making it £280 ish ???

While I may well largely agree with you... why have you waited more than two months to resurrect a "dead" thread :-(
