Yeah I had noticed yesterday - however I know that CCL are reputable :-) - it's £959.99 on Play.com and £1,076.58 at Amazon

Desk-lap-top ;). It's huge. Promoted these when they came out. The 'Dragon'. Is a nice machine though, but not portable. Great price. Almost half price!

Shame it doesnt come with blu ray otherwise it would be a steal.

Yeah this is the last of the Dragon series since HP and other manufacturers are focusing on 1080p friendliness now with their 16 and 18" screens with 16:9 instead of 16:10.

I decided to buy one of these for hotel stays, LAN nights and to replace both my gaming and media centre computers. :-) Since the 8800gts is still one of the best graphics cards you can get for a laptop, I don't think it'll need replacing for a few years while in the meantime I upgrade to Blu-Ray and the X9000
#6
That is a tasty laptop...Still not quite sure of HP yet - had a few glitches with my work one, but it's early days yet...

Why would you want a notebook that will be used at a desktop? Might as well get this:

At least it's sexy too, and a Mac :-)

FFS Mac vs PC...SO TIRED.

I use a mac because I work in web development and I need my computer to be reliable and it comes with all the tools for webd evelopment built in (SVN, Ruby on Rails, Apache, SSH, a proper command line)..If I didn't or I wanted to play games I'd get a PC because they're cheaper.

All I've read the past 15 years is Mac vs PC..WHO CARES USE WHAT YOU PREFER OR IS MORE SUITED TO YOUR NEEDS.

PC=Cheap, Games, Runs most Productivity/Office software
Mac=Reliable, 140,000 less viruses, more expensive, POSIX compliant, look nice.

Why? As I already mentioned it's to replace my desktop & media centre units. I want it portable as I stay away in hotels a lot due to work, and also for it to be a decent games pc for LAN nights.
Also if you want to watch a film wherever on a nice 20" HD screen, take it with you.

I do not need a Mac, it doesn't fulfill my software and gaming requirements. Even the Mac you posted isn't a similar product. If I wanted an all-in-one PC I'd purchase one of those 20" barebones that was posted a while back.

I have seriously had enough of this PC vs MAC c**p. End up seeing it in every other PC deal thread.

That's not quite 'better spec' ...It's just different.

Personally I'd prefer having the much better graphics card - the 8800gts has more power than the 9600gt. Also having the tv tuner, fingerprint reader and bigger screen benefit me more than a full hd smaller screen. Plus this has 2 hard drive bays.

I have one of these. Bought it the day it came out. Original price was £1,600 ish, I got it for £1,150 ish after discounts. At this price it's a steal!

HUH?!?

the 8930g also has a fingerprint scanner and 2 HDD bays.
the only thing its beat on the the GPU

the p8400 2.26 ghz is faster and has 1066 FSB instead of 800 FSB which the T8100 is.

is has 4gb of DDR3 1066 mhz ram istead of 3gb of DDR2 667 mhz ram (that laptop/santa rose

laptops only support up to 667mhz of ram, google it) so the acer has a lot faster ram.

Also i rather have a 18.4" 1920x1080 Full HD screen instea of a 1680x1050 screen. It might as 2" less but at least its moveable at 4kg instead of 7kg

The 320gb HDD is also faster at 7200rpm.

The acer is a new Centrino 2 laptop and not the older santa rosa laptop like the HP. it has better ram, better cpu and works cooler and has a longer batery life.

It's got blu ray aswell.

Built in 5.1 suround sound
plus there is no need for a 8800m gts in that as it will be bottlenecked by the cpu while playing games. so all its doing is killing battery life

Ok, here's what I don't get with what you're saying:

1) You got your Acer at what seemed to be a misprice as you said yourself it went up to £950 afterwards in that thread.

2) The 8800m GTS cannot be upgraded, but CPU can. I can change this if I felt the processor was inadequate (which it isn't) to the X9000. A 9600GT does not give the performance I require.

3) (in edit) The laptop thread you bought your Acer includes the spec: RAM - 4 GB (installed) / 4 GB (max) - DDR2 SDRAM ( 2 x 2 GB )...which clearly is not DDR3 :-/

Hey if you want to post a current deal on the laptop you bought under £900, feel free

y do you want a 20.1"?

also, i bought my laptop when it was only £750 at laptop direct. its now back up to £950. i posted it on HUKD if u have a look.

but if you are going to get this laptop, i advise you to get a centrino 2 model of it, as its a lot better.

Yes you got your laptop at a misprice. That price is no longer available.

I chose this as it is by far the best laptop spec for the price. It was within my budget and the performance matched what I need from it. I don't need Blu-Ray as I have them re-encoded to .mkv. I don't need 1080p since it's pretty wasted on a laptop. Instead you can use the HDMI port to have it on a 1080p TV.

The difference between a P8400 and T8100 is so minimal that it is not enough for me to warrant getting a 9600GT over a 8800GTS....and you can't tell people to buy a Centrino 2 because it's better.....where is it better? Since when was a P7350 better than a T8100 for example? Technology costs money. For £750 show me a laptop that will get you a better gaming performance on a screen 18" or more.

I have to agree, looks an excellent purchase for the money.
#25
Have to agree with the op this price is fantastic price, I have not seen a machine that comes close to this in terms of spec and price. This machice hits the acer out of the park the 8800m gts is a lot better than the 9600m gt (i have a machine with this chip).

I really do not see the point of having a full hd screen on the acer, is very simply not needed and is not really needed until you get over the 26" mark or possibly 32"

Personally if it was me and i needed machine with blu-ray and the 9600m gt chip i would forget the acer and get this http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/473359/HP-DV7-1000/tab/specification screen is an inch smaller and the processor is a bit weaker and it does not have the pointless full hd screen but it is certainly a lot better value at 250 quid cheaper than the acer especially when your considering your getting a hp rather than acer.

This machine is a steal, heat and rep added

Good...you won't be disappointed. Without tweaking it'll give 7900 or so on 3dmark 06 :) If you bought a X9000 to replace the T8100 it'll give 8900 3dmarks

i thought you cant change the processor in a laptop? can you?

are you being serious? the processor is probably at the very top of the mid-range mobile processors out there. Granted it not at the top but have you seen the price. Please find me another machine with this graphics card in for the same price, never mind one with this processor, this sized screen, 2 hard drives and from a top brand.

You will not find a machine with these sprecs anywhere close to this price
#30
well not many compaies sell 20" laptop, as you might aswell get a desktop at tha size.

and that it not the top of mid range processors out there. the T8300 2.4ghz one is. then the T9300 2.53ghz is hig-end.

so what if its got 2 HDD's.
i can fit 2 in mine, and so can most 17" laptops. it doesent matter if i dont have 2 in. i mean 1 320gb HDD is beter then 2 160gb HDD's as 2 slows it down a little.
my 320gb 7200rpm HDD is much better and quicker then then 2 10gb 5400 rpm HDD's easily.

Well that all depends on where your definition of mid range ends and highend begins becuase personally i would put the t8300 and the low end of the highend processor but like i said that it up for personaly definition.

I would much rather have 2 hard drives in my machine for the simple fact of having a back up drive in the machine. Yes i grant that 7200 drive would be better but there is nothing to stop you changing the drives at a later date when and if your needs require it.

but you are still missing the simple fact of the graphics chip, the 8800m gts is far superior to the 9600m gt and i have a 9600gt and think it is a good card but the i can admit the one in this machine is a lot better.

and i know not many companies do 20" laptop but there must be market out there for them and for those people that want a 20" laptop this is a fantastic deal. If you can find any machine that has an 8800m gts card in for this price no matter what screen size i will be amazed.

plus the other fact is that this is hp and the one is acer, really is no comparison in the two

Yes you can, HP supply Service & Maintenance guides for their laptops to show you how to replace each and every part of it. The processor 'officially' supports the Quad X9000, and any Penryn up to 45w.

I've got a desktop, but I don't want to lug an Antec P180 with all the bits, monitor, keyboard and mouse everywhere. This laptop has a 3 hour light use battery. That's better than half of the lower spec laptops!

If I wanted a 9600 I'd have bought that Aldi laptop that was posted at £580 not long ago. Paying another £130 for an Acer with smaller screen, 9600gt and less features....I don't see the logic in it. If you want a couple of extra seconds on your video encoding then that's great - you go for it :-) Personally I'd rather play FarCry 2 on high!

Anything with an acer badge is a BAD move! I know from first hand.

My acer laptop's screen keeps going off everytime I move it, as does the backlight, and now the trackpad is no longer working.

Stay away from acer is all I'm saying.

PS: this is for a Acer laptop that has been looked after and has been inside my house 99% of the time - so don't give me bullsh*t about looking after it.

HP is a good brand and their customer service is much better.
#37
This is a fantastic deal for the money and certainly ticks all my boxes, for me nothing comes close on price for the HP machine. The 8800GTS card is a fantastic bonus. Mine ordered for delivery Monday!

As far as Acer is concerned my only experience of their products has not been a happy one at all, maybe I have just been unlucky but once bitten as they say. I say avoid them.

And for anyone who may be interested in comparing the virtues of the 8800GTS against the 9600GT see the links.

well, i got mine at a good price and spec.
and so far everything is perfect.

th only thing better in this laptop is the graphics card, other then that, my acer has higher specs for everything. and i dont play games so i dont mind if its a 9600m gt.

also the x9000 is a core 2 duo 2.8ghz processor. not a quad core. also when do you plan on buying a laptop processor from? also the only people to sell it are on ebay and for £260 and then you need to open your laptop up and fit it in.
I know it does not support any quad core processors as there is only 2 quad core processor, and they are movtevina/centrino 2 processor which dont work with any santa rosa laptops.
the quad core's which is only supported by movtevina/centrino 2 laptops is called QX9300 and Q9000

also games like gta 4 recommend 2.4ghz quads. so the 8800 gts wont help much there.
even games like call of duty 4 recommend 2.4ghz core 2 duo's at least.
so im not so sure you can run frycry 2 at max settings with a T8100.
#40
Yes owais we get it you got a good laptop. Why do you need for everyone to validate your purchase and reassure you that you have made an awesome purchase.

At the moment hardly any games or applications take advantage of the dual core option let alone you using the full capability of a quad core. In fact you would probably be better off getting a dual core than a quad core - as you would end up getting a better dual core cpu for the same price.

For most game the bottleneck is the Graphics card as opposed to the processer. On a max setting it is the graphics that are hammered rather than the gameplay so obviously a better graphics card would be better than a better cpu.

All in all this is great deal. Adding to the fact that you got an acer which i would never buy - they have a tendency to break down as soon as they get out of warranty. HP are renouned for the build quality of their kit and their customer services.
