I'm going to america for 3 months in September on a driving holiday and was hoping to get a cheap satnav before going out there. Any recommendations? Most of the cheap ones I see on here only seem to do Europe :(

Most things are cheaper in the US, aren't they? And if you buy there you'll have the right maps installed.

I paid £175 (b4 cashback) for one of these 2 months ago so this is a £50 reduction. Fantastic price. Works ok. Video playback not so good but thats not what it is designed for.

I picked up a Tomtom One 3rd edition with full US maps when I was over there in April. Got it from Walmart for $145/£75. Target (another superstore) had them for about the same price - as did Amazon.com.

Me and a mate at work got these last week at£125 each with £30 cashback. Already hacked to accept TomTom and the resolution of the screen is simply stunning.

Superb unit with great expandibility. Voted Hot.

This is no exception :) As always there's a reason these are being sold off, the main one being that HP don't have a clue on what makes a good SatNav unit.
E.g.
Front-mounted power button placement and logic is all wrong - short press turns on, long press turns off. So it'll be wasting battery in your pocket or bag.

Text to Speech quality is awful and often unintelligible.

Power and flashing Bluetooth LEDs are high intensity and hugely distracting in the car at night.

Speed Camera alerts don't work - POI icons show on the map but it doesn't warn you visually or audibly.

Bluetooth handsfree connectivity is unreliable and audio poor.

Don't be tempted to load an update from HP support site either - many have tried and ended up with units that won't boot. There's no system restore option so that means a return to HP.

That said, if you like playing with and hacking gadgets, the 800x480 display does make it interesting. Just a shame it runs on the crippled WInCE instead of Windows Mobile.

Good deal

Do you have any links which has instructions to access the Windows CE to install other programs?

Have put this unit through its paces so will write my new short review.

Driving 2,000 miles around France gave me a good oppourtunity to test this unit out, sadly it let me down, badly!

I ignored previous warnings about the unit crashing thinking that they must have messed around with the device or something, my unit crashed about 50 times over the last few weeks, constantly out of memory. The directions it gives seem ok and the screen is quite good but the crashing has really put me off. It's not that it just crashes every so often, it's on particular routes. I can't remember the exact locations but I'll try to re-create them later and ask that someone can try their device on the same route. I was driving towards Albi (France) and for the first 3 hours the gps was fine, about 2 hours from Albi the device crashed and upon resetting kept crashing for about the next hour. 1 hour from Albi and the device was ok again. The same thing happened about 2 hours from Albi on the way back (from the south this time). So it seems that certain locations when you get near them cause some memory overload. If I didn't put the map on I still had voice navigation so I got there ok but it really wound me up!

Thinking of sending the device back for repair but I guess there's no repair for it as it's a software problem probably. Also badly let down by the POI, which I'm sure they are going to get out of by saying that they're user maintained and nothing to do with them (but they did supply them). Four out of four petrol stations that I tried did not exist, and are likely to have never existed. Probably people playing tricks saying there are petrol stations in the middle of nowhere to get people like me stuck, luckily we found one but be warned, they are very unreliable. Futuroscope was on there but it was the back enterance rather than the normal enterance.

How is this unit for everyone these days?

Mine is still working but only if I have it plugged into the mains. For some reason it won't work via usb car charger and it won't hold any charge in the battery. Luckily I've got a mains socket in my car so I can use it. I assume I can send it back for replacement under warranty as the battery is duff already?
