#15

At the £350 mark the Dell Vostro 1000 is the best spec, then there's the Asus X50N-AP042C for £356.51 with only 1Gb ram instead of 2Gb, tho a very nice looking machine.

Wasn't this already posted last week? I can't find it but I know it was because I bought it on Friday!

I don't think that is quite the same laptop. That is for a Athlon and this is a Turion (the latter of which is a superior processor). I can't find this laptop on the HP website which is very odd.

Hi guys been after a laptop for about this price, can any 1 tell me how a core2duo Processor compaires with the AMD Turion 64 X2 TK53 Mobile Technology.

As much as I hate to say it (I just bought this laptop), the Core 2 Duo is superior to the Turion processor in terms of performance.

At the list price, an unremarkable spec, but a good brand name. Even with the reductions the fact of being HP is pretty much the main selling point.

Can buy that spec (actually with Intel Dual Core) over the counter at Staples for 400 sheets if you wanna compromise on branding (or you could when I was in there on Saturday)
#22
what's a vcard?
#23
I'm sure this is discontinued, I may be wrong though.
#24
For £350 PLUS 1350 CLUBCARD point this doesn't look too bad.

(1700 poins when paying CC+ card)

a v-card is a card that you get from Varsity clubs - you pay £2 for it and it gives you 5% off play.com and loads of other offers

http://www.varsitybars.com/
#27
I got mine delivered today and it looks like a great little laptop!

a nice size screen too - not too big not too small

Also, it's a lot lighter than I was expecting!
#28
Ahh, There are no varsity bars in NI to get a card from and you need a number to register online. I could really do with the 5% saving from ucas or varsity.
Please help
#29
do you have to go into a bar to pick a card up?

there websites a bit gay

BE WARNED!! Just had a look at the specification on my laptop and it is the much inferior AMD Athlon 64, NOT the AMD Turion 64 advertised by Play.com

I will give Play.com a ring tomorrow if they're open and see if I can get some compensation (I don't really want a refund as I spent an age setting Vista up)!

it did say it was a TK-53 though, which is of the Anthlon 64 range?
#32
Can you let us all know how you get on with Play? I was going to order this laptop but will hold off as I dont like the idea they are advertising a processor and supplying another.
#33
It was a cockup on their website. They have since amended it. A manager is going to call me back regarding compensation though they have offered to have it picked up (which as I said earlier, I don't really want because I like the laptop otherwise and it took me ages to set it all up.... Vista is sooooooooooo slow compared to XP)
#34
Is there a great difference between Turion and Athlon?

The Athlon is a cut back version of the Turion.

It eats more power and half the cache of a comparable Turion.

Hope that helps
#36
Thanks for the reply!

So does the fact that it is an Athlon and not a Turion make it not so much of a good deal or is it still a pretty good laptop?

Yeah, its still a good deal. Sure there is a difference between the processors, the Athlon being a more budget version and you ll get slightly less performance. But to be fair, its still a pretty capable dual core. In everyday task such as web browsing, word etc you ll probably feel no difference.

However, thats not to say you shouldnt give Play.com a call to see if they would give you some compensation! Worth a go if you have already bought it

They never phoned back so I called them today, Rebecca, a supervisor didn't believe me that it was originally being advertised as a Turion so I had to e-mail them a screenshot I took of my purchase.

She said she'd phone back within the hour, she didn't. I spoke to Rebecca again, the most she would offer was £20 compensation which I've turned down. £20 is a joke seeing I specifically ordered this because it was a Turion.

I told her £20 wouldn't change the fact that it is still a Athlon which is old and slow and that I would settle for the Turion equivalent (basically same specs but with a Turion processor) which they are also selling which she said no because it's £130 more. I said £130 is more like what a Turion processor is worth but I would settle for £50 compensation and asked her to negotiate. She said £20 was max and wouldn't budge.

I told her I'd get back to them after I had spoken to Trading Standards.

At the end of the day, I would have never bought the laptop if it was an Athlon, even if it was £20 less (£50 less, maybe!) but either way, I don't want this laptop for the money I paid, it's just too slow.

I think that you were pushing it a bit with trying to get a laptops thats £130 more.

So are you going to return the laptop back to play.com?

I don't see how the Athlon would have such a significant speed impact as what you have described. The Athlon TK-53 is rated faster than the low end Turion such as the TL-50 and TL-52. Sure it eats a bit more power but a Turion chip is hardly going to make a difference to a laptop this size.

Each to their own, but IMHO £20 is fair making the laptop £409.99 and you ll still have quidco on top of that.

If you find your laptop slow, it is probably due to all the bloatware installed by HP, you should try uninstalling them first. There are loads of software guides on the net about speeding up Vista, such as running TuneXP or switching off certain features.

Would like to know how others got on if they have spoken to Play about this.

Forgot to mention, it's £100 more if you're comparing RRP's.

I'll wait till I get a response from Play.com and Trading Standard and will then decide.

Fair point, but the fact still remains this Athlon (TK-53) is an inferior processor, albeit not lighting speeds slower and less efficient but inferior all the same.

I'm afraid I have to disagree, I think £20 is an insult and they should be offering me a lot more or the laptop I originally ordered.

The first thing I did was remove as much stuff as I could and it still runs slow IMHO. I will have a butchers on the web RE fine tuning Vista, thanks for the heads up

Me too.
