Price drop on the N54L Microserver. Best price I've seen for a while since they've stopped the cashback. I thought they'd stop selling the Gen7's in favour of the new Gen8's but anyway...

Normally it comes with 250GB HDD and 2GB memory, but the first thing I did was get more memory for mine, and I had plenty of SATA drives knocking about. This comes with 4GB RAM rather than the standard 2GB, and you can pile all your old SATA 3.5" drives in to it too.

Thought someone might find this useful.

oh dear, looks like all those stockists who wacked the prices up when the cashback was on to try to make even more profit have been left with machines they can shift and are having to knock the prices right down. sadly it still isnt low enough to make me run out and buy one.

Very tempting. Thanks.
I can wait, so i think i might. Just to see if the cashback returns.
#3
Might have been cheaper but still obscenely cheap for what you get - so a good deal for me.

Just ordered one, cheers!
Worth noting I could not get the guy on the chat to give a free delivery code, and previous ones on this site are expired.
£6.95 for next day.

I have been on the look out for one ever since I missed the cash back boat. This is a Good deal at present considering that a lot of companies have this as £200+.

I went for one from ballicom on amazon for £147 inc delivery at the weekend. Wish I had waited now to save a couple of more bucks...

I paid much less with a HDD.. Buy one when they have no choice but to reduce the price or go bust hoarding stock

Good machines for the money, but nowhere near as capable as the G8 with a Xeon in.

Still a bargain at the moment,
even if not in the same league as the cashback deals of a few months back (and probably won't be back until next year).

Got one on cash back from here, I put a 250gig SSD in the top bay as main drive then other drive can shut down when not in use. I also put a hdmi card and usb3 card in it. Works a treat.

I got one of the slim usb 3 blu ray burners which I use as a optical if required.

Which is substantially more power hungry than this.

Tempted to buy one (because I want one anyway) but send the cash back away anyway, cheeky I know but £100 cash back would be brilliant.

Love mine its been on 24/7 since i bought it when they were last doing the £100 cashback its downloading and serving media to the home because i couldn't get Windows home server i modded windows 7 under the hood so it behaves like a server. I put 8gb of ram in it a AMD 6450 GPU and installed the modded bios and then installed a hot swap bay in the DVD slot and loaded another HDD in, it sits in the cupboard with nothing connected to it and i control it through remote desktop its a fantastic bit of kit and should run for years without fuss. Copying files over gigabit i see 135MBps+ transfers.

Its not really £137 when you think about it by the time you've added whats needed its £500+ easily.

Not sure if above is a wind up...but just in case.....the supplied 4GB RAM plenty for a home server, and most who buy this will have a few hdds sitting around. Also not sure why you would install a GPU if its not connected to anything. Most could have a server up and running for no more than the asking proce and a few spares.

Can you do a "restart" with modded bios? mine hangs every time. I have to either shutdown and re-power up or restore original bios otherwise it hangs. anyone else experience thia?

Sounds very much like he's using it more as a PC rather than it's intended use as a server.

Restarted many times since install and not a single problem. Try perusing HomeServerShow see if anyone else had the problem.

I had to use the modded BIOS to get Server2012R2 running properly and to unlock the speed on the other SATA port.

Ive 4x2TB and the 250GB mounted in a bracket in the ODD bay as the install drive and stuck a fanless 2GB 6500 (I think) for HDMI out. Gets used mainly as a server but I connect it up for game guides now and again if my laptop isnt handy.

Next upgrade will be 8GB RAM for some VM usage :)

If I could afford another one I'd grab one for later use. Perfect for what they are and do and will last years if used properly :) If they dropped more close to the £100 mark Id have to, porn collection is getting rather big...

But xeon chip costs more than this whole unit and uses 5x the power.

I put on the modded bios and it runs win 7 32bit. But the gigabit socket only runs Ethernet speed. Mines the 2nd gen one.

A) depends what xeon, you get low power versions
B) plenty of second hand kicking about, plus pretty sure the preferred model for the g8 is cheaper than the i7 t model 4770t still 200 odd quid but the performance difference for transcoding is unbelievable.

At the end of the day it horses for courses. I'd like a g8 for the performance, but I'm happy with my g7 just now. If only it wasn't near full :-(

Make sure to tinker with the NIC's link speed settings.

One of my laptops does this, if its set to Auto it'll only do 10/100 and has to be manually changed to Full Duplex to get the full giggage.

Awesome. Been looking for something for some virtualization, I already have an N40 with 16gb as a home server but would like all the virt work to be separated. So I can swap the memory around and don't need any disks as I have some spares. This is the deal for me.

Cheers.

If you want to save yourself the delivery cost and you have a PCWorld business account go buy it there for pick up

http://www.pcworldbusiness.co.uk/catalogue/item/P193577P?from=category&heat=title

Should have bought it when the cashback deal was there but I don't think I will miss this opportunity, don't think they will do cashback for some time yet :/
