So is laser jet really a laser or is it a funny name for a modded ink jet that will still get clogged up?

It uses toner, nothing 'jet' about it. I have one. Actually, two.

I got one of these when Comet was closing down, no real risk at the price I paid.
Works great and idea for air print too.
#4
Why is it called a laserJet printer then?. I'm not trying to be clever at all, Its a genuine question.
#5
Simply because it sounds techy:-

I bought this on Boxing Day sale from Amazon @ £49.99 so this is a really good price, as it was £25 more normally.

I also bought a replacement cart from eBay for < £7 delivered for when this 700 page toner runs out.

Can this print on cardstock?

This is a laser printer not an ink jet printer. Laser printing is an electrostatic printing process using a laser to project an image on to a drum where toner (powdered ink) is electrostatically oh just read the wiki page >http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_printing

Laserjet is Hewlett Packard term for laser printing it has nothing to do with ink jet printing, whereby ink is forced through many nozzles >

Incorrect.

I've had many HP Laser printers as far back as one for 1993 (which still works on Windows 8.1 64bit, that's the beauty of HP drivers) and they all work with compatible toner. My current HP Laserjet 2420 has a compatible toner installed. You only have to look on eBay to see the myriad of compatible toners for HP printers including this printer. You'd be looking for toner compatible with HP CE285A 85A P1102 P1102w M1130.

duplex printing?

I read somewhere to stay away from ink jet printers because they use so much more ink than a laser jet. and that HP use incrypted tech on the cartridge chip so you can't use 3rd party ones ?

found the answer, no duplex, therefore cold

brother got almost entire line duplex, can't believe in year 2015, with so much technology available, duplex is not default.

Does it print duplex? One of the reviews says it doesn't actually work. 28 Nov 2013
It does but not automatically. It's prints one side of all the pages and then prompts you to reinsert the pages into the sheet feeder. You click ok once you've done that and then it will print the second side on all the pages.

Have had the non wireless version for years at work. It churns out around 1000 pages per week. We have Economode selected to make the toner last longer. Compatible toners are very unexpensive and work fine.

One important thing to note is this doesnt have a drum so no need for drum replacements like many laser printers, only toner cartridges.

yes of course it will work that way, but it's too risky if you are producing a 20 page or more document, sending the paper through once tends to curl it a little bit, then if you send it through for the second pass and one page jams, you are in real trouble! its almost impossible to restart from the right position.

Inkjet printers use up ink as part of the cleaning cycle, but can also dry up/clog if not used regularly. Last printers don't have ink, but also don't use toner for cleaning and are cheaper for larger quantities etc.

Both HP inkjet and laser prints accept compatible 3rd party refills. My experience with their inkjets was that some worked better than others, plus did not display ink levels.

There's still a market for smaller, cheaper, non-duplex machines like this. All the duplex ones I've seen are more expensive, naturally.

Its not a shock that it isn't duplex for this price!

Just a heads up - I bought this and used the (EXPIRED) code - PRICELES5 - for £5 off when using Mastercard and the code worked fine. Total cost - £49.99, delivered tomorrow using Prime.
