I took delivery of one of these yesterday and I have to say I am stunned at how good it is for the money. I wanted something bigger than a netbook but something portable enough to throw in a folder bag between meetings.

Ultra-mobile, lightweight laptop with brushed aluminium finish
13.3-inch HD widescreen display and HDMI port
320 GB hard drive, 4 GB DDR3 memory
5-in-1 memory card reader, webcam with integrated digital microphone
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
1.9KG weight

What's not clear on the Amazon description is aside from more RAM and a bigger HDD this model also comes with the external DVD Lightscribe drive the £339 model doesn't have.

The good things:

Gorgeous Chiclet keyboard
The chassis is thin at the front and fatter at the back, making it comfortable to use on your lap
Really nice LED screen
Really nice brushed steel finish and nice chrome edging
Nice to have a separate DVD drive (on my last laptop I can count on my hand the number of times I used the dvd drive (USB drives took over..))
Nice thin overall profile of the chassis

Bad things...
The touchpad takes gettign used to = its quite polished out of the box
The up and down arrows are half the size of the left and right

So you get the laptop and the external drive - the ULV CPU (yeah yeah people will slate a Celeron but in realistic terms it does enough for what it needs to do and doesn't suck the lifeblood out of the battery).

For me the feature set, price and finish is well worth the money...

I hope the touchpad gets better with time, as everytime I have tried one of these its been un-usable.

It takes a bit of getting used to true - but its already better than the one on my other HP laptop (DV6000) and a Dell I use at work (D610) and its infinitely better than the other halfs U500 Toshiba touchpad which is just bloody awful.

I think they are excellent really nice design and apple standard quality for a great price. Just a shame the CPU is slow.

The CPU is a balance of need versus life - it will do HD quality video playback and will last hours on the battery - I have a quad core dekstop for anything significant.

This is the biggest mistake laptop buyers make, the CPU is very rarely the bottleneck in a system unless your doing something very specific. lots of people buy laptops which waste battery just to exist in a web browsing state - its all about matching your real needs with a good specification - which for me this processor does.

Has anyone hooked up a laptop with similar spec to this to a HDTV and used it as a HTPC successfully? Windows Media Centre + wireless keyboard and mouse etc?

HDMI?

Yep, One HDMI on the left side and two USB's on each side of the chassis - theres a card reader on the left too.

id get the acer travelmate, better spec'd imo, cheaper, albeit this looks pretty awesome and will have better build quality. its also lighter than this

you can pick up a usb drive for about £20. got a samsung one for £17.50 the other day.

no hdmi :( anyone know the battery life? (not manufacturers estimate!)

Not had the chance to try it out fully as want to keep it hooked up for 24 hrs before I condition the battery properly. To be honest the acer gets its battery life from throttling performance - and the build quality and aftercare is no where near HP level.

I looked at the acers closely but feel they've throttled to get the stated figures...

Great price and great spec, but a shame the CPU is so pants. May as well get a netbook if it struggles with anything beyond web browsing/office applications.

Not another DM3 deal!
