A regular deal on this site and a great bit of kit for the money.

We use these for our developers but make decent media servers in the home, just use remote desktop and you never need see it.

If you search the forum I think you'll find that others have done that - from memory.

Wow! What an amazing price. The components alone must cost more than this. 3 year warranty is a great bonus too.
#5
Does this definitely include the remote mangement card?

All other suppliers of this specific model say it's an optional extra.

I think Insight have got the spec wrong. This card costs MORE than they are selling the server for.

I don't think so, I've never seen it before with the ILO included.

withabix: they do say its a special version with the ILO, so I think it is just a really really stunning deal and I'm trying to find reasons not to buy another just for its ILO. The thing is that ILO isn't really of that much use in a home setup, although very neat.

can this play cod 4?

Available cheaper at ebuyer with free delivery:

Does it support normal DDR2 memory? or need for Registered or Buffered one?
#10
will this fry my chips for me?
#11
Much cheaper than the NAS I was looking at, and you can run anything you want! Very tempted :)

What exactly does ILO give me - I aint got a clue on windows stuff as Im UNIX at work. Does this just give me a remote console over the network?

If i just want to hide this away somewhere and log into it , am I better off using remote desktop ?

But the power requirements will be much higher , my 1.5 TB nas using 20w my main pc uses 200w which is about £175 a year at 10p a kwhr if I can still use a calculator - lol.
#14
Can anyone confirm the spec of the SATA interface on this for me? The 250Gb HDD is identified as SATA 150 but I'm sure the spec of the actual controller is SATA 300 (I remember trawling through the HP site last time this deal appeared).

It's a good price even if it is only SATA 150 but even better at SATA 300.

Thanx

Sure, so what the hell is ILO and does it matter? I use NT server and remote desktop - works for me just fine.

stupid question but does the PC use as much as 200w when it's just ticking over?
#17
The iLO card implements HP's "Integrated Lights Out" functionality. Basically this is a hardware-based co-processor that allows you to connect to the servers console and view its state, even if your Windows (or Linux, for that matter!) installation has failed.

The 100c version that is an option with these ML100 series servers (although it looks like it comes with these ones) is a cut down version of the "proper" iLO built into HPs "proper" servers (ML/DL300 and upwards) but still useful, especially if it is free. The best feature is the ability to remotely power on/off the server via a web interface, saving a drive to the office.

Well this is according to an a energy meter thingy I bought. PSU is rated at 500W , and this is while i left it on downloading stuff for 4 days or so. So it wasnt being pushed playing games or converting video or anything. However this is a 3Ghz P4 machine so probably uses more power.
Dual core Xeon is probably pretty power hungry as well though.

I think im going back to using my dual celeron 500Mhz machine for leaving on most of the time - is uses 60W.

So its essentially a remote console instead of a remote desktop

The HP ML115 is using about 70W during transfers and about 54W when idle. And that's with Opteron 1210 (105W TDP).
#21
This deal is perhaps better than the HP ML115 that kept coming up every so often a couple of months ago, as I believe the ML110 will work with the recently made free VMWARE ESXi server without too much messing around!
#22
Is the ebuyer deal the same? Says the 100c card is optional...

thanks. I've got an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ that runs 24/7 so just trying to work out how much it's costing now.

Not quite - ILO runs independent of the OS, RDP requires a working OS.

Thanks, just ordered one of these. Heat added and rep left! :)

Both the Insight and eBuyer specifications state:
Remote Management Controller Integrated Lights Out 100 Remote Management Processor

The standalone HP Lights Out 100C card contains the same Lights Out 100 processor that appears to be the basis of the intergrated controller on the ML 110 G5 server.

Thats why I got this energy meter gadget - used to have 12 73Gb SCSI disks in a case and was wondering if it was just cheaper to buy 1Tb disk and save all the electricity cost !

Was a bit surprised when i saw how power hungry this P4 was

1 ( 1 ) x PCI Express x8 - full-length, full-height

So this will take Geforce 8800GT no probs but only running at 8x instead of 16x but you wouldn't really notice this outside of benchmarks.

I have an ML115 and the PSU copes perfectly fine with an 8800GT 512MB.

Insight web page specifically says it has the CARD.

Both eBuyer and HP website both say:

Management features
Embedded Lights Out 100 IPMI 2.0 standard reporting; Optional HP ProLiant Lights-Out 100c Remote Management Card

Here's a quote from a reviewer on eBuyer:

"After the POST fan noise, it is quieter than my Dell desktop PC." :)

I bought ML115 g5 series came with opeton however i could not install windows xp or vista. However windows server 2003 or 2008 will work fine. you need 2 add an other vga-card for installing windows vista (must come with SP1 or it get blue screen).

FOR HP/COMPAQ PC, when you start your computer, the fan will run really fast to push air inside. after 10s It will be really silent.

I Have bought 1 from Insight will update with as much info as possible once delivered also looking at options to see if i can upgrade to quad core and maybe install vmware

I'm running ESXi on one of these (without the ILO card) without any issues at all. Even with SATA in SATA mode rather than IDE mode.

As quiet as they can be, load dependent. As somebody else said, loud upon first switch on, but they quieten down after a few seconds. (same as any server).

ML115 G5 runs XP fine, I just used an HP XP recovery CD and nothing special. Running an 8400GS in mine without issue.
I've also taken my Dual Athlon image using True Image and Universal Restore, to put XP on it, works fine.

I've ordered one from Insight.

The description on Insight's website has now changed, and it no longer says that a card is included. It looks like someone there has spotted the mistake.

Ebuyer seems to be the best deal for this server at the moment.

Hope you all saved a copy of the web page!

I've clicked 'Expired' as the deal described in the OP no longer exists.
