NB since my original post, this server has increased on price from £200.09 to £202.20 delivered. Still stupidly cheap though! Now back to the original post...
---
The cheapest way to get this server so far. Ridiculous price for this server. I have confirmed that buy-hp are the correct type of HP Partner for the cashback to work.

The price above includes the £6.50 next day delivery.

You need to have an invoice dated before 31 August for the cashback to work. I've been told by buy-hp that they have stock.

Cashback form here:

http://h41225.www4.hp.com/UK_focus/PA0074%20-%20HP%20Microserver%20%C2%A3100%20Cashback%20August%2012%20V2_0.pdf?jumpid=re_r10104_uk/en/ent/tsg/promoindex-ot-xx-pu-golden_offers_smb/chev-hp_prolian_16162/

Go on then! Fill yer boots!

*****ORDER DATES & CASHBACK*****

I've just checked on the live chat thingy on the hp.buy.com site and have been told that the important bit is the invoice date - so as long as you get your order in for Friday (31st), you'll get the right invoice date to make the claim to HP for your cashback.

You can email the cashback form and your invoice instead of sending it by snail. The email address for this is [email protected]

Graphics card wise, I would recommend from personal experience: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0036DD4CO/
Best combo of price, performance, low heat and low noise.

RAM, a single 4GB stick is more than sufficient with no 1080p HD lag whatsoever, cheap enough to grab 2 if you prefer though I don't see it being necessary:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CMX4GX3M1A1333C9-XMS3-Desktop-Memory/dp/B003ZDJ42O/

Optional bay to mount 5th drive: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000KS8S9W/
Will need some cables too: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000ITL1PG/
Alternatively you can choose any optical drive you want (DVD/BluRay etc.) If you choose a half height one, you'll need a bracket too. Just FYI, there's a spare SATA port on the motherboard itself internally as well as an eSata one on the rear outside.

You may wish to opt for a dedicated PCI audio card however half-height ones are rare and retail £80-100. I would suggest you stick to audio over HDMI connected to TV unless you really want an optical out to connect to surround sound system, in which case this little number is brilliant: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0036VO4X4

In the future, if you'd like a TV tuner to watch/record freeview TV, you can stick this in the PCI-e slot: http://shop.blackgold.tv/BGT3620 (or an alternative from Hauppage like: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hauppauge-WinTV-HVR-2200-Analogue-Hardware-Encoders/dp/B0029VTP2C/)

Enjoy!

Nor do I but it's £100.09! Knowing my luck, if I'd waited, there would have been some kind of server-based war and prices would shoot up again! :)

Loaded mine full of HDD's, Added a 6450 Gfx card and an Asus Xonar DG PCIe, RAM is dirt cheap for these too, dont NEED to use ECC.

Makes a cracking little low power machine.

If you get a low profile graphics card that supports audio over HDMI, you don't need a separate sound card.
There are a total of 5 bays, if you include the CD\DVD bay. You can put a SSD where the DVD drive goes, which would leave you space for 4 big HDD's for storage.

But the Pi doesn't have a massive amount of storage. Could you set the Pi up to stream media from the server? Can the Pi do XMBC or something similar?

...b*gger! Now I need a pi! :(

I have one of these running XBMC with my storage in it, I also have a Pi running Raspbmc (XBMC) which streams from this. Its much smoother on the HP but still works fine on the Pi.

You might as well get it now when youre on the dole youll be doing nothing until november anyway! GO ON SON!

Thanks - I've been putting this off for some time!
No choice now!
Can I buy 2 in a single transaction and get cashback for both?

I'm assuming it's like the N36L so you've also got the eSata port on the back of the machine too. I've got an SSD mounted below the DVD bay (just had to move the power cables) running off the eSata port and then another hard drive in the DVD bay along with the HDD bays. Lots of room :). Bargain at this price too - HOT!

HD5450 will do the job nicely (that's what mine has).

Only Raid 1 or 2 in HARDWARE raid - I use Openmediavault (http://www.openmediavault.org/) on my older and slightly slower N36L and it works great using Software Raid5. Disk fails, just replace the disk and it rebuilds. If you loose the OS disk and remove all disks, re-install software, and it automatically detects the array.

Great bit of kit at a great price :)

Has anybody tried to run this as an Asterisk server? How can I watch .mkv's from this?

Holy crap what an amazing price! Scorching hot
#32
These must be approaching replacement - maybe selling off stock? Either way, can't recommend N40L enough.
#33
Jesus, why can't I afford this right now :(
#34
Damn you OP, damn you. I was being so good this month as well!!!
#35
Hot! I paid £239 less than a month ago. Can't imagine this price will be beaten.
Hopefully it is UK stock though, not EU imports that are not eligible for the cash back.

Their page says it's eligible for £100 HP Cashback (both with an image next to the picture of the N40L and on a seperate promotions page). I'm pretty tempted, but can't really afford it!

I've fitted this HD 6450 and it works great :)

not even joking why is it always the case when you have no money.... you get stuff like this at such a low price!
#39
Went all the way through to the payment page and sat there scratching my head, wondering what I would actually use it for. Canceled the order in the end, as I couldn't justify buying it just because it's ridiculously cheap. :|

In simple terms for the uneducated (i.e. me!) what could this do for me that my Qnap NAS doesn't do?
