Brother has this, fantastic laptop.

Good build quality too.

Dislike HP but the spec is good and have Amazon vouchers to burn. Voted hot.

This seems like a better deal for £20 more, 2.0GHz vs 1.86GHz, 3gb ram vs 2gb, 320gb hdd vs 250gb and free bag and software.

Acer Aspire 5742Z

Also, no camera on this one by the looks of it.

I'd take a HP over a Acer any day of the week! Also since this is a P6100 HM55 chipset laptop, it would be very easy to buy an i5 cpu and pop it in and you have an i5 laptop. TDP are same.

as long as the chip isnt soldered on to the mb.

Spec sheet

It does have built in webcam, mic and bluetooth according to above HP specs for G62-A11SA model

I5 possible ....but lots of disassembly with HP. Acer have a history of having CPU upgrade on underside near RAM. Can't confirm with specified model tho. Recently did it with an Ergo engage so its still common practise

Hard drive is 7200rpm , 4 gb max ram

Looks nice, although I can't decide between a laptop, a netbook or an Android tablet. For the money, this deal seems excellent though.

Service manual available here

Looks as though it would be a complete strip down and rebuild to change to an i5 cpu...

Have been looking for a 'run of the mill' laptop, to be used for general MS Office apps, browsing the web and simple online games. This laptop ticks all the boxes and is a very good price. Thanks MajorMajor - have some heat.

This seems a fair comment. Other than the HP looking nicer, the extra £20 for the Acer does seem to give more bang for your bucks.

Give me a shout if anyone spots any of those £300-350 i3 HP Laptops that were going around late summer last year. Cheers

I had an HP laptop for 12 years. Initially it required a new hard disk and the trackpad never functioned but wasn't going to send it back again. Apart from that, and with light use and care, it required no servicing at all for 12 years!

Acer seem better value these days with their super budged eMachines series.

I just don't like how my new HP had so much wrong with it and still passed QC's {he says, watching his new Acer burst into flames before his eyes}.

Where to buy these laptop CPU's cheaply? Please provide link.

How many people bother upgrading laptop CPU's though?

I had to replace a dead laptop CPU and finding a compatible one that was sensibly priced was almost impossible. So unless someone has a supplier of i5 CPU's suitable for a laptop at a sensible price, I'd not worry about upgradability too much,

I have a similar HP PC as my work machine and it's awful! The keyboard and trackpad (same as this one) are so badly designed it's not funny. AVOID!

Price has now gone up to £383.92 + £8.00 shipping
