generally they are a bad deal nowadays. they have a underpowered cpu, a replacement would cost a fortune because of the socket, and then their is that issue about the cashback, lol

Bad deal is relative tbh.

My older Gen7 is chugging along nicely doing everything I need from it.

Added in 16GB RAM, cheap 2GB GFX card for HDMI output, USB3 card, an extra SDD for OS using the eSATA port and another HDD in the DVD bay to total nearly 10TB.

It runs 2012 and serves the house all its media using Kodi (sudo headless libray maintanence), Plex for the other devices, downloading tools and then runs another two installs of Server 2012 over HyperV for labbing.

Yes, you could build a better 'PC' for a similar amount in the same form factor or spend money on a high power NAS but be limited by the OS.

These can also be used for 'Nix and ESXi if you really wanted to as well.

For a ton and a bit in this form factor with the drive space they are brilliant bits of kit.

Not sure about that, I mean yes if you wanna do hardcore processing they're a worse deal than a dell T20 say when the cashback's running but what if you want a NAS? 16GB of ECC DDR3 is cheaper than DDR4, processing speed doesn't matter much, dual gigE NICs matter though. They're also small which is a bonus in my book.

Did anyone make an effort to check the cashback form?

16GB of ecc ram is dirt cheap on Ebay, well made bits of kit, will withstand everything up to an ELE. Small, relatively quiet.

Replacement CPU's aren't that bad, got an i5 2390t (dual core + hyper threading) running in mine for £45. If anyone is interested in these see Home Server Show Gen8 subsection. Plenty of info.

Really? Can't say I've seen unregistered/unbuffered ECC dirt cheap on ebay and have usually found it as cheap buying new from Amazon or crucial directly.
Plenty of registered ecc dirt cheap on ebay.

Ew they went unregistered, as did the dell T20 apparently. That changes things, I've got 32GB of DDR3 ECC Registered on my desk as that's what my workstation takes and am looking for a NAS that can use it.

Is there a better deal out there? The OP's link is still correct and has a post-cashback price of 115?
