HTC Desire only £319.99 on PAYG @ O2 instore

went into o2 in southampton (west quay) yesterday and saw that they had the HTC Desire for only £319.99 on pay as you go.

not sure if this is in every o2 store?

Also if you don't want to be on o2 then you could get it unlocked for probably under £20 so in total it would be £340 for an unlocked HTC desire, next cheapest i can find is £399.99 at play.com

Isn't this £285 somewhere?

You can get the Samsung Galaxy S for the same price, which seems to be the better phone
#2
i haven't seen it for £285 anywhere, and i would say the samsung galaxy s is slightly better in some ways but not in others, and i haven't seen that phone for under £320
#3
It's £285 direct from O2 phone sales. Been an ongoing deal for a long time, and it's how I got my Desire.

Reviews consistantly rate the Desire as the best phone out there, outranking the Iphone, have a google.

Due to lack of stock and the long tie in on contracts and not many deals re minutes, texts and internet usage on contract, I voted this hot.

Mainly because you can buy it, grab something like a giffgaff payg sim (which uses O2 network) and away you go.

I'm awaiting mine...patiently.;)

I just found the deal I was thinking of - http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/htc-desire-in-contract-upgrade-285-/676576

It's for O2 customers only, so this would be good for everyone else

I have this as a company phone - fantastic piece of kit, but it eats through the battery like there is no tomorrow.
#7
you also have to buy the £10 Payg sim

If you have the money fair enough, not everyone here earns ove £20-30,000.

iPhone contracts cost over £850, I got the desire for a £420 contract for 24 months with 300mins and 3gb internet. I couldn't get the same offer with this on the iPhone.

How do you work that one out jalal?

iphone 4 16gb - £499
12 * £15 a month (on 3) - £180

Total: £680 / £780 for 32gb which is what I have.

I only posted to give people a giggle, but don't spread inaccurate stuff dude, it makes you as bad as me :)

The current Desire is also being changed too. They're moving from AMOLED screens to SLCD ones.

My Desire is fantastic, but the one weak point is the speaker - if anyone uses theirs for hands free calling check it out first, because I was a bit disappointed.

That's the only weak point though, the phone is excellent in every other respect. You get a great phone and don't have to give any money to Apple... you'd be living the dream ! (IT Crowd reference!)

Hi,
does anyone know if this is locked to o2 ?
Also does it have any o2 branding?
Thanks

Been on the Desire for a week or two now.. the battery life is worse, internet browsing is much more fiddly, screen is awful outdoors.. it's nice, but it's no iPhone.

No they don't - with Tesco it's less than £600.

Looks good! Might be ideal for me since I have an old Nokia payg phone that I only top up like £30 a year with. Contracts in general are ridiculous for me.

Overall the Desire takes a crap on the Galaxy according to most reviews\people who've tried both.]

Its worth paying extra just to not be on 3. never ever will i be going back to them again.

I've tried both the Desire and the Galaxy now and out of the box the Desire is IMO the better phone.

However if you are willing to tweak settings and install custom versions of the Android software to fix the problems that Samsung has let the phone go out with (particularly an evil lag problem) the Galaxy S can really shine and it's better hardware really does make a difference.
Even strange omissions by Samsung, like not including a Camera Flash or a notification LED can't obscure just how powerful the phone is or how bright and clear the screen is (and if videocalling does actually take off this time, the Galaxy S is ready with it's front facing camera).

So IMHO both are great phones but since I'm happy to mess around with the internals of the phone I think the Galaxy probably is the better phone for me.

Great phone, playing playstation 1 games on mine atm, always something new and cool on it.

Picking up my Desire on Friday for this price. Though didn't post it as a deal here as it was already posted, but with relatively low heat in comparison to this one.

Would also recommend this.....

I've added heat to both!

Agreed the handsfree speaker is week. It's ok for handsfree in the office, but about as useful as a HDUK web-designer when used hands free in the car.
The Desires other weakness is it's appetite for power. It'll eat and spit out a battery for breakfast.
#29
Desire speaker is rubbish (mine has a rubber case which I had to cut the hole out for the speaker seems it was too small (made for Nexus One) ).

I'm using a Modaco custom 2.2 firmware and I easily get 2 full days out of the battery now so very much impressed over 2.1update1.

Great phone.. very poor in direct sunshine (luckily it's only sunny 2 weeks of the year here:D ).

iPhones are fantastic for general users as it's very simple to use. Desire is for the more tech savvy as it has endless features. Each to their own though.
#30
Agree. Andoid 2.2 is supposed to increase speed and battery life.

Also, the internet is full of tweaks for getting the most out of the battery, which isn't ideal, but can be done.

I had the Desire for a week, but sent it back due to poor battery life and bad screen in sunlight.
I've now got the Galaxy S and apart from the build quaility prefer it to the HTC.
The Galaxy lagged when the 'daily briefing' widget was running - try removing that and see how it goes. The screen is much better outdoors and though I was worried about the lack of flash, the night mode and party/indoors modes work fine. Phone flashes always seem too harsh. The HD video recording is very good and the CPU/GPU are faster. Its a very nice phone and is about to get an official firmware update (hopefully) and Froyo is coming too.
If you want to use it as a games platfrom (esp. 3D) the Galaxy wins - see youtube for Quake comparison.

This is a great price for the Desire, hot from me.

I've played around with a Galaxy S, an iPhone 4 and an HTC Desire - and bought the Desire.

If you are the type of person who plays PC/PS/360 type games on your phone or need a really big screen, then the Galaxy S is the better phone. For me, it was just too big and the lack of a flash put me off completely (although swipe is fantastic!)

The iPhone 4 was such a let down and due to Apple setting all the providers tariffs for them, it just costs so much money. I just don't get why people still say they are the best thing since sliced bread - it's got to be ignorance, surely. Better phone, costs less to buy, costs less to use, does more.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL7yD-0pqZg

The Desire is so fast (1Ghz proc, same as the Galaxy S), great camera and flash, does everything I need and looks great - I love it, probably the best phone I have ever owned or used.

Which is illegal to actually play any games on unless you own them already which is why there isn't an "app for that".

Had a Desire and now got the Galaxy S.. Galaxy S edges it for me as the screen is much better, Swype is amazing and the Desire just looks so ugly in comparison. Would still rather have a Desire than an Iphone mind you.
