Hi,

Came accross this deal online, im basically putting it on here to see how good a deal it is, so the hotter it gets the more likely im going to buy the phone.

i thought it was pretty decent, HD7 as the HTC desire HD is £399 on the site.

It's a hot price but you shouldn't let the voting sway it.
Your choice should be based on the OS you prefer from android, ios or windows phone 7
Especially since HTC produce very similar phones on android

Should mention in title that the handsets are Refurbished - probably get a brand new one for £20-£30 more so really depends if you think the saving justifies getting a Refurbished handset.

as my smartphone went on the fritz with 8 months till contract end i got a win 7 handset a few months ago for £200 (lg omnia 7 - sadly the worst of the win phone 7 handsets as LG quality/support is DIRE - im still waiting for LG to sort out the bluetooth) .. current handsets are being cleared ready for win phone 7.5 release in a couple of months with a higher base spec handset ... what surprised me is how poor the quality of LG was compared to HTC (ive had HTC handsets since a SE P900 many years ago)

FTSOP is spot on with his comments though be aware that win phone 7 is a new o/s so will change (get better) hopefully rapidly .. i would have thought that once Nokia starts pumping out win phone 7 handsets that these will be the ones to get (nokia makes superb hardware) and i would bet with nokia (supplies the mobile network infrastructure) pumping ahead MS will be under a lot of pressure to improve functionality quickly - steve balmer needs a jockey on his back riding him hard before MS ever gets it right

personally i dont have a problem with win phone 7 as i only really need email/musicplayer/web BUT beware many applications based on java servlets (eg IG index) will NOT work plus there are very few decent apps and the music playing functionality isnt anywhere near as good as the iphone/pod

I would say its a lot of phone for £250 if you dont need apps and just need it for web and email .. if you need it for apps i would

1. get the orange sanfrancisco for £80 though a bit underpowered
2. get a HTC, Samsung etc 300-350 android phone eg desire HD

I'm getting for my father the sanfranciso for example as its perfect for him (just needs email and web and a couple of apps) and for only £80-90 (free to unlock) super value

BUT if you can afford it bite the bullet and get the iphone ... i am no fan of apple and its fanboys but sadly its still everything considered the best out there by a mile IMHO

I was thinking of getting the LG Optimus 7 - I wanted to try out WinP7 - did you jailbreak your phone?

I like the fact this has a built in stand, could do with that on desire hd

I have the HTC HD2 which came out at the beginning of last year with Windows 6.5 which was so out of date they really shouldn't have released it on a phone with which at the time of its release had the best hardware. Anyhow some clever folks have figured out how to port android onto this and also windows 7 so if you can get one in decent nick the world is your oyster as to what OS you want to try out apart from apple but who wants an iphone anyway :p. Although this for the price doesn't look too bad either

hi bigpappa

nope didnt jailbreak ... contacted LG and they tell me the bluetooth issue is a software issue and they will issue a software update to rectify (LG have "form" for using this excuse for defective products they dont want to recall .. the update never arrives) .. personally i suspect its a poor quality bluetooth board as there are plenty of reports of this defect online

I looked a long time ago at the samsung vs HD7 vs LG and i would say (putting small diff in screen size aside) :

the Samsung has the best screen, the LG not that far behind and the HD7 quite dull in comparison

the samsung and HD7 are way better quality than the LG and has a far far better camera (LG pretty poor in comparison)

you get 16GB with the LG versus "usually" 8GB with the other 2

and from owning the LG i would say :

1. battery life very poor (less than a day with moderate use)
2. bluetooth issue (fault) quite common (or a software defect if you believe LG)
3. earpiece (serves as speaker as well) volume quite low .. often you cant hear it ring or hear games etc .. pretty bad design fault really my old touch pro 2 could fill a room with sound it was so loud
4. poor quality earphone connector (even though only a few weeks old and with virtually no use its already getting intermittant when moving)
5. camera pretty poor quality - compared to samsung omnia or iphone etc

I think with my time over again i would have paid a little more for the samsung or gone for the HTC HD7 if i could have got it for the same price as the LG ... but i wouldnt (and didnt) buy a win phone 7 at anything like full price i would pay a bit more and get an iphone

Erm, the Omnia 7 is actually made by Samsung. I had one for a couple of weeks but sent it back due to the bluetooth not working at all. Loved the AMOLED screen though and Windows Phone 7 OS - I had an iPhone for 3 years and WP7 makes iOS seem a bit old fashioned and clunky.

My phone is htc hd2 running wp7

it is really good. Great refreshing OS. any issues with battery life are superfluous cos I just bought a couple of spare batteries off eBay for a couple of quid and keep one in my pocket. Change of battery and reboot takes 30 seconds. Better than iphone where you must have a charger handy.

Looking forward to xda developers porting the mango update when it is released.

Product shows as discontinued - should probably be expired. Not a bad looking phone, but I'll stick with Android...just a personal preference thing. :)

You were doing well til you said that. It's not even as good as the Desire HD which I have, and my friends are switching to, and will be left in the dust by the Sensation. So to say it's a mile ahead is just plainly ( and unbiasedly as I can ) wrong. Sorry.
People are very slowly wising up to Apple and it's appalling software.

Windows Phone 7 owner , htc mozart, best phone and best os I have ever used, and yes used android too. I would however wait for the new spec phones as I will wait till septemeber and get a new wp7 with the mango update cant wait its a serious contender to android and iphone and personally after mango it will be the best. No im not a microsoft fanboy, i know this from exepriance and used both phone abdfooird - 2 years and iphone - 6 months (hated the phone (personal though))

Screen is really blurry on this model, my mate has it and he squints at it every time he uses it.

Just upgraded from an iphone to an HTC HD7, and it's the best thing I ever did. I was taken in by the Apple hype which sadly is just that, hype and no substance. Had nothing but trouble with the iphone and wouldn't touch with a bargepole again.
#21
Ah just missed this, would've been tempted to use it as a development phone.

Re comparisons to the iPhone by angus58, lets say I've used both extensively, but WP7 still feels like something competing with iPhones of two years ago rather than the current iPhone 4.

Aweful screen, the new version called HD7S is already launched in Cannada. its got a AMOLED screen. 4.3 inch of that good real estate is much better

1) Battery Life
Battery life on the Optimus 7 is like 2 to 2.5 days.
*iPhone 4 (*via Engadget) 1.5 days
Compared to my iPhone 3g 1.2 days
My Blackberrys (various) 3-5 days
My Androids (2) 1 to 0.8 days

No way is the LG Optimus Battery poor, you must have a dud.

2) Bluetooth
I also had the Bluetooth issue. If you Google, you'll see me p*ss*d off all over the net about it :)
I took 2 devices back to the shop, they were early builds. 3rd one has worked perfectly. This was a known issue at release time. (I sympathise with you on that score if the carrier wont replace it, they bloody should IMHO)

3) Yes, the speaker is tinny, even for ringtone. But at level 30 its plenty loud enough.
I'd argue WinMo7 inability to keep vibrating is a bigger issue

4) Ear peace? Eh, I plug ear phones in, and they work. Its not like its an odd shape, or stupidly placed. It works.

5) Camera. The camera is not great. Its not terrible, and a lot of other phone cameras are so so, its why I still carry a separate camera with me most of the time. One day phone cameras will be good enough. But for the odd quick snap at a dinner, or event its adequate.

The build quality of this phone is amazing though. Its the most solidly built phone I've ever handled. It feels like a bar of gold. Surprisingly good screen for plain ol' LCD. Samsung probably is better as its AMOLED (deeper blacks) but I have no complaints there.

Its not a case of, I own this phone, therefore don't knock it. But it really is seriously good and weel screwed together.
I love my GFs Torch but for differing reasons for example. But claiming poor battery on the LG is plain wrong, and its build quality is excellent.

I also wouldn't get an iPhone again. The 1 hour to sync with poxy iTunes (compared to super speedy Zune)
Zune streaming (can't yet get the equivalent with Apple)
And horrid centre of phone screen notifications on IOS, yuk!

Pros and Cons like most things in gadget land.

If only it was running android. Windows OS does look nice but i bet the app store is awful.

Anyone got a hands on experience with Windows mobile?

sounds like you've made your mind up already.

plenty enough apps for me in windows marketplace, but i'm not feverishly looking through it every moment of the day to see what free or paid apps out of the gazillion to choose from can satisfy my app addiction every minute of the day.

i use my phone for news, texts, web, email, calls - in that order - then lastly for games and whatever apps i actually need.

i have not in any way been disappointed by wp7 and would buy one as my next phone, particularly when mango update comes out

Yeah im not a huge app user, but the 'bigger' apps, facebook twitter those ones i would imagine if they did updates, windows would be the last to recieve them?

The operating system does look brilliant, just not sure if it would be wise to buy in a year or so when they have made some updates and tweeks?

Jack :)
#27
the bigger apps are the most polished

wp7 has really deep facebook integration anyway, so you don't even necessarily need to have an app

twitter is well supported (i use birdsong - very good)

why would wp7 be the last to get them? it isn't fragmented like android and there has been so much investment in it that developers would be a bit daft not to head over to wp7 - apparently the porting process is pretty simple.

anyway, the choice is yours.

i have tried all sorts of OS's (apart from apple - cannot stand itunes and do not like the walled garden appraoch) and wp7 is the best for me so far, for a phone.
#28
Well i spose the smaller apps then really, i just thought that the developers will obviously go for Android and Apple because theres alot more of a market there since more people own either droid or apple devices.

Its like the Nokia Ovi Store wont have anywere near the amount of apps as others stores because there amount of users is smaller.
( Although Nokia used to be the biggest phone company in the world )

WP7 is excellent, you have obviously never used it
Also the screen on the HD7 is very good, not IPS or AMOLED but still very good

Bit late, but incase anyone else is reading, it doesn't, it has an S-LCD screen.
