on the face of it a good deal ; better handset than an iphone (as it has a slide out keyboard and is therefore much faster to text with imho) and not a bad contract

I don't know anything about the vendor though.

no slide keyboard with this one ... had it for 2 days ... an awful touch screen ( that s why it s equiped with a stylet ) ... and windows 6.1 sux .... not anywhere near the iphone

The HD is "better" for various reasons in many opinions but a slide out keyboard is not one of them! (it doesn't have one) you are either thinking of the Touch Pro or the X1 Xperia

Windows is a very good platform for anyone interesting in having what They want not what they are given, the screen responsiveness can be changed

The phone isn't better than the iPhone. I have the HD and my other half has the iPhone 3G. They each have their own plus points. Yes, the interface of the HD isn't as user friendly as the iPhone, but the phone is so highly customizable, it is great. The screen is mind blowing, better than the iPhone for those of you that don't know. I could talk forever about what I think are the positives and negatives of each one but I don't need to.

I guess what I am trying to say is if you are looking at one or the other don't listen to other people saying "This one is better", try and get your hands on both to try out, failing that do some research. They are two very different phones, and it is simply a case of which suits you better. Look at reviews and screenshots, go on forums etc.

Still, pretty good deal!

Oh, and I think that both will be beaten by the upcoming Palm Pre... :)

had my eye on one of these handsets, but when I go to the deal Orange they say the LLU isn't available in my area & 'offer' some priced alternatives for the broadband!

I've checked a few other sites & they say Local Loop Unbundling has been done...

Can't disagree more. I think having the phone for 2 days shows you had no patience with it. I admit it needs tweaking and it's not as easily accessible as an iPhone, but with a small bit of effort and know how it can be made into a really fantastic phone. If you want a phone handed to you that will will work great, but be identical to everyone else's iPhones then get one, if you want to be able to customize your phone then the HD is a great phone. People just aren't willing to put effort into making 'gadgets' better anymore, they just expect them to be perfect out of the box. The thing is everyone has different ideas of perfect - the iPhone caters to the mass idea, this HD (in my opinion) gives users the ability to customise it to their idea of perfect. I've had mine for 2 months now and wouldn't dream of changing it. It's a fantastic bit of kit. If anyone wants to know just how much you can customize and tweak this phone, just visit this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=451

P.S. This phone is also known as the Blackstone, hence the forum title.

got one just before christmas and i think its excellent - proper head turner too. Excellent when you customise it to your own preferences, recent gadget show comparison had this winning against iphone, blackberry storm and tmobile google fone. only thing letting it down according to presenter was the OS and he is a iphone fanboy ;-)

Hows is the touchscreen sensitvity and web browsing?

Is the web browsing comparable to the iPhone? Is it smooth?

Also have you tried Opera for windows mobile, is it any good?

I think its a stonking deal. Probably the apple fanboys.

This is MUCH cheaper than the iPhone price plan and it can do much more than the iPhone.

I got Touch HD last week as an upgrade (paid 7.50£ for the phone and signed up for another 12 months on Racoon 30 paying 27.41). I have a mixed view about it, I found camera being ****, but web browsing and document handling is very good. I must agree that in order for this phone to work well you need to put some good effort customising it. If you can't / won't do that go for the Iphone...

That basically sums it. You need to put different/modified software on it to make it any good.

I have used PPC's for about 7 years.. bought the Omnia recently but found the screen aspect ratio rather odd for running certain programs .. to give an example ..cant read buttons when using Pocket Mechanic, have been using this prog for years so can still navigate my way around it with my eye shut
Anyway have big hands too so now plumped for the Touch-HD last week . Installed several apps , London A-Z fuzzy rendition when loaded up on the HD screen , Tube Map the same . Brittanica ., Lexipedia ..all fuzzy. I think the prob is twofold . larger screen almost 4 inches diagonal, and these progs were mostly written for 320x 240 layout & not HD resolutions. TomTom 7 & AOP have excellent screen rendition on the HD
I prefer the Omnia( for several reasons) but in theTouchHD , I find I I have a phone I can use my fingers on like the Iphone .. have used Macs over the years currently running Mac OSx /Vista/ XP side by side by side , would never buy an iphone..wonderful interface but definitely not as versatile for apps useful to me like a windows mobile!

p.s.
I think samsung employed some clever marketing with the omnia , you can use the phone simply ... Tocco-like with the basic features without having to ever faff around under the hood with the Windows mobile OS , or you can delve deeper if you're brave & willing to learn about pocket pc's . Therein lies the appeal of the Omnia ..''I have a big Tocco-like phone but hey did you know its also a Pocket Pc'' or ''a windows mobile professional phone'' to be precise!

Darklight,

Funny you should mention the Omnia (8GB), I had one for 2 months (it replaced a HTC Touch Diamond). However after 2 days I hated the phone and it sat on my desk for a good 7 weeks. Two weeks ago off it went to CEX, I managed to trade in a couple more phones and get a HTC Touch HD and it is miles better than the Omnia. The inbuilt GPS in the Omnia was a major let down, even my old SPV M700 got a quicker GPS lock. Next was the user interface, next to HTC's Manilla it looked very poor (no wonder the folks at Modaco came up with Manilla for the Omnia).

I can once again get GPS fixes whilst sat inside rather than having to go outside as I did with the Omnia. This means no more sitting in the car waiting for a GPS fix. The GUI is much better and pleasing on the eye, I don't have to carry that dodgy looking Omnia stylus either. I tried various new ROMS but never found anything half decent. There was a registry fix for the GPS but it was still poor.

I agree about the screen resolutions, Miomap looks excelent on a HTC Diamond but a bit fuzzy on the HD. TomTom as you write is the exact opposite.
