Huawei MIFI wireless modem E585 £44.97 with £30 credit instore @ currys
I was browsing currys and found this mobile router for a great price of £44.99 on three payg, amazingly it comes with £30 of credit or 3gb internet usage free with the item.
I bought one of these ages ago and paid a whole load more, they are great for ipads or just providing on the go wifi.
Instore at fishponds bristol.

The huawei e585 is a dongle from three uk that allows you to create a wifi hotspot anywhere using a mobile sim card, it's a great little device - the only down side is that it is locked to three. I googled for a way to unlock it but it seems there is a mine of people that rather than share the info choose to charge.
To do this you need a few things:
1. A mifi (obviously)
2. A sim card for a network other than three
3. A peice of software called psas (phone system analysis software) HERE
4. A hex editor HERE
Some of the next bit I have copied and pasted, some I have written myself based on my understanding of the way I did it that worked.
Install PSAS software on windows computer.
After this, change the sim card inside your modem,
(to a diferent network sim card)
connect to the computer with usb cable and install the software that come with your Mi-Fi,then close down the Mi-Fi software.
(make sure that you are not connected to the modem via wireless and the software that come with your Mi-Fi is not running, this step is only for instalation of the Mi-Fi Drivers)
USING PSAS To retrieve your unlock code)
Switch On your E585 and wait for it to start up completely
Run PSAS
On PSAS main page you have tab menus, select the "Hardware Forensics" menu tab and select "Use Mobile Port" this will open another PSAS program window for you (which is where all the magic happens)
In the new window:
on the "SETUP" menu tab (which you are on already)just select the "Serial COM Port" (you need to choose the one that says that is your 3G Application Interface, not the one that says PC UI Interface whatever the COM Port), then select the "baud speed" (This varies depending on the computer speed and windows OS), and thats all you have to do for the setup menu tab.
Next go to the "DIAG" menu tab and click on "send" this should now show some numbers on the open space box below, On the 'Diag Functions box' (box below the "send" button box)you wanna select "Read EFS" instead of Save memory to file then tick "Alternative Method" then on "max page" type: 250 (i did 250 but can range from 200 to 600 depending on the lines), then click "lets go", this will ask you to save a file so just name it and save it onto desktop. (you have to keep trying, PSAS will crash often and the more lines the most likely to crash)Once it works it will save the file to the desktop You now have a log file which will tell you your unlock code .
The file that you created should be about 250kb in size, that file contains your unlock code. You need to use a hex editor to find it though.
Install hhd free version linked at the start of this post and run it, when it's running choose open file and navigate to where you saved the file from psas. Once it has loaded press ctrl-f and a search box will open up, in that search box type PST and press enter. When it finds the string within the file it will have a series of numbers next to it (eight digits) this is your unlock code (if you cannot find the pst string then you need to run psas again and change the max page from 250 to something higher, like 400. Then search again using the hex editor).
When you have your code, open a browser with the modem connected and a sim from a locked network and visit http://192.168.1.1/simlock.asp.
In the box for the unlock code type in the number you got from the PSt string and click the button next to it.
If all has been done well you will see the modem reboot, it is now unlocked for any network. You only need to then go into the modem settings and change the apn to match the network you will be using (you can save profiles for each network within the modem memory for on the fly changing on any pc). Apn's for networks can be found HERE
To change the APN settings
By default the Huawei E585 is configured to work with the Three mobile network. To use your unlocked E585 with a different network operator, the APN settings need to be changed. Below are instructions on how to change the APN settings
Make sure your MiFI is connected to your PC and the 3MobileWiFi software has successfully installed.
* Open '3MobileWiFi' or Click http://192.168.1.1
* Find the section 'Change Your Settings'
* Enter admin password (By default the password is 'Admin')
* Click Log In
* Click Advanced Settings > Connection Settings > Profile Settings > New
* ‘Profile Name’ – Anything you want (e.g. Vodafone Profile)

* ‘Authntication’ - PAP
* APN - Your network operator’s APN HERE for a list of UK apn's

I will happily help anyone out who is having problems, although I am no expert.

Can you please tell me the Curry's SKU number, then I can check if there is stock locally, thanks in advance
Yes I have a vodafone sim in my unlocked E586 mifi......remember this is the old model tho, the 586 is much faster
the GREAT ADVANTAGE of this model is that 3 have HOBBLED the wifi sharing of the microsd (unlike competitors on other networks) on its successor the e586 where the microsd is completelty and uttlerly useless ..you can of course try and use it as the most expensive flash drive around but the drivers screw you anyway ... the mifi on other networks not only have wifi sharing of the sd card contents but some even dlna server built in ! ... come on 3 you idiots and release a firmware upgrade to rectify the e586 ! ... it hurts the most if you have an ipad as its a great way of getting files on/off an ipad

Thanks in advance
Once unlocked, what are the best sims to use in these? What should I be looking for?
Thanks.
'The Three E585 Mi-Fi Take it Away Mobile Broadband package offered here provides 5GB of data allowance and commits you to rolling monthly contract payable by direct debit. You'll pay £15.99 per month for 5GB of allowance, with only 30 days notice required to terminate the contract.'
Could I buy one and ring up straightaway to cancel the contract? Presumably I'd still have to pay one £15.99 payment though even if I did that?
