Do these need some sort of hub?

Hot. Why can they not just make b22 versions of these to sell in the UK? Does anyone actually have E27 fitments? I can't even find E27 pendants.

Yes. You'll need the Hue hub.

No, they can work independently with the dimmers!

You can buy adapters to convert to B22. They're £1 for 2 at ikea.

I actually wasn't aware of that! You learn something new every day :)

EDIT

Are you sure about this? The description says:

Hue Dimming Kit requires a separate Hue Bridge to connect to your wireless network. Hue bridges can be purchased as part of the Hue starter pack.

Yeah I already got the starter E27 kit and got the adaptors. They look fugly. These bulbs are the worst hue bulbs you can buy, was hoping B&Q had the white ambience ones which are much better but unfortunately they sell the same b22 version of this at £15 a bulb which is quite a steal compared to other places already.

They 100% work without a hub with the switch, both as a "normal" bulb and with the switch. You can't do stuff like configure the switch for additional lights or remotly control the bulb without a hub though.

I think the dimmer switch is the best value product in the Hue lineup. Get the iConnectHue app and you can set it up to do all sorts of stuff.

i don't think thinkharder is right you need a hub to use them, they use the zigbee protocol not wireless so they need something to talk to exothermic and program.

You do not require a hub to use them.

However additional functionality like turning them off from your phone , schedules, etc can only be achieved with a hub.

Completely wrong. You can use the dimmer and light without the hub. You'll miss out on some features but a quick search on google and you'll see how.

You're wrong! If the dimmer and bulb are supplied as part of a kit the bulb is controllable by the dimmer without the need for a bridge.

I can also vouch that this is correct, out of the box the dimmer is paired to the supplied lamp and will work without a hub as a basic wireless with dimming facility lamp.

Did you know you can use this without a hub?

Cheers OP for the spot. Order one set and considering getting my wife to order another!

Thank you op ordered one and heat added. Bit confused, can anyone help?
Does this kit have the same bulbs that b&q sell for £15? And are these different to the "white ambience bulb" mentioned?
P:)

Yes they're the same bulb as the £15 one but different to the ambiance bulb

Most lamps now are either E14 or E27. Doesn't really matter as you can usually buy adapters for all variations for a pound or so.

Its a toy.

The dimmer will work with the bulb without a hue bridge if bought as a set as theyre paired up. With a bridge you can do so much more. Mine come on automatically via gps when i get home and switch off when i leave home. Plus i can control them remotely and via siri on my phone.

I was in my local b&q to replace my ceiling pendants with E27. The B22 versions are £2 each, the E27 they only do fancy pants ones starting at £20.

If you have an ikea near you buy one of these http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/search/?k=Pendant&N=0&No=24&Nr=AND%28content.type%3Ap%2Csku.browsable%3A1%29&summary=true and replace the shade

Yeah, annoying... when I switched to LED bulbs, I also found a single bulb wasn't bright enough in some rooms where I used to use a 100w old bulb, so I bought a few of these:

Are these the same dimmer switches which are on Amazon at £29.99?
If so, can you please tell me at what point on checkout you input the code?

I don't see why not, though they're going to be lower from the ceiling. The current flow shouldn't be a problem

I use a 4-way converter in my office/workshop, very useful on a dimmer switch... for normal light, I use it at only 25% brightness, but when I'm working on something (usually when soldering) I turn the lights up to 100%

Good to know, I suppose LEDs use up a fraction of the current that a regular bulb would
