If you are thinking about leaving Sky, it'll be the best £200 you'll ever spend
#3
Can anyone recommend a decent satellite dish to put with this Humax receiver? (not white).
Thanks.
#4
Had one of these for the last 18 months. It's brill. Buy one! You won't regret it.
#5
Got my dad one of these, great bit of kit this is.

I have sky plus with basic package, so already have the twin coax inputs. What do I need to get this working please? Dish relign etc?
#7
All you need to do is unscrew the cables from the sky box and put them into this one, satellites are same alignment as sky's

nothing - just connect you 2 cables from your LNB, since you will still point at the same satellite - Astra @ 28E. You'll just pickup all the free channels only... so not the Sky channels as on your package. Manual of box (though has higher HD size) on http://www.humaxdigital.com/global/products/new_manual/UM_FOXSAT-HDR_400GB_10-0618_low.pdf

Edited By: nj1 on Aug 14, 2010 13:24: not exact machine on manual, as different HD size

Hi all is this the best currant price at the moment ?

Well its the best price I could find for this baby and I've gone for it.
If Quidco tracks it will knock about another £7 off.

Quidco tracked in 1hr. £6.55 expected so total price will be £211.90

What channels can you get with this? Can you get the Sky sports channels? What about foriegn channels for footy.

If you've already got a sky dish, why not just buy a Sky HD box with viewing card? works out much cheaper than this (I picked a new 500gb one off eBay for £61 delivered including the card which would have cost £25)

I was going to buy one of these, but the Sky option is cheaper :)

Humax sell 'Grade A' for £199.99, got one last week in perfect condition.

I thought you couldn't record or pause TV on a Sky box without subscription?

That's why i'm strongly considering cancelling Sky when the price increase comes in October, selling my Sky+ HD box and buying a Humax as a solution. If i can still record using the Sky+ HD box on Freesat i'll keep the box.

One question - does the Humax have a RF out option, as i running the Sky+ HD to 2 other rooms. If it does, is it controllable remotely via the RF?

No this is known as a free to air receiver, it does not have a card slot to add subscription packages, also it doesn't allow motor support, and only supports Astra 28E satellite.

You would need to buy a HD Satellite Receiver and a motorised dish in order to receive other satellites and foreign channels, but with many of them being encrypted with Nagrovision 3 now, unless you have a valid viewing card, then the only other option is card sharing which would still cost you further.

Currants are 89p a bag in ASDA.

For those asking about whether a cancelled Sky+ box can record, the answer is no, UNLESS you pay Sky an extra £10 per month to keep the recording functionality on your box.

Ahahaha brilliant!

Anyone know the best price for just a HD Freesat receiver as I don't really care about recording anything?

Thanks

i'm 99% sure you lose the Sky+ part of your box when you cancel sky (which is totaly ****, since you own the equipment, what gives them the right to disable it I have no idea. Lawsuit anyone?

so the options when you cancel sky are:

1) change no hardware and lose the extra channels and recording
2) get a cheap freeeview SD recorder (get only SD freeview)
3) get one of these freeview HD recorders and still get only freeview but in HD
4) card sharing, illegal stuff on an even more expensive box to get everything with no subscrption, but more hassle to set up

The way i see it, you can pay for one of these boxes in about 4 or 5 months of sky+ subscription so it's not a bad deal
but option 2) is probably the best for most people since they don't care about HD and it's only approx 1 months sky subscription per box, AND you gain independent boxes per TV (assuming you currently use analogue link for half your TVs).

One question - does the Humax have a RF out option, as i running the Sky+ HD to 2 other rooms. If it does, is it controllable remotely via the RF?

I need to know the answer to this question as well. Had a look at the user manual link provided above and it looks as though it might not be able to do so - but i'm no expert. Can any one confirm please????

No it doesn't have an RF output.

If you have a quad LNB you can run the Humax and still use the Sky+ box

I have this Humax PVR and run the scart through an rf modulator to give me an rf out, they are about £20 on ebay.
You will loose quality though.
I am now looking down the option of using a hdmi matrix for my tv distribution. You can get a 4 x 2 matrix for approx £90, plug upto 4 devices in have 2 tv's and have any combination. You can get a 4 x 4 for about £220 and after that the prices go mental.

You haver to subscribe to sky to keep on receiving HD cannels on you Sky HD box also if you cancel your subscription the record / pause will not work on your sky receiver.

October prices with sky are increasing and the HD package is changing so unless you subscribe to all the packages you wont be able to receive all there HD channels.
#27
Hoping you guys can help me - I like the look of this (and have voted hot) but is there such a thing as a hard drive Freeview HD player which also has a DVD player? Looking to reduce the 2 million wires behind my tv by replacing my old sky box and dvd player. Thanks.

You are correct....once your Sky subscritpion ends, so does your ability to record on the SKy box. I know this because my Sky sub ran out 5 days ago and as soon as it did i was not able to record or even play back anything id previously recorded/

This is INCORRECT information!!!!

You can still receive All the standard free to air HD channels (ie the likes of BBC1, ITV, C4 etc etc) without a subsription.

This too is INCORRECT information!!!!! (5 "explanation" marks.)

In terms of satellite TV, C4 HD is not currently free to air, it's free to view meaning it's encrypted meaning you need a Sky viewing card to watch it meaning you need to use a Sky HD box (or other HD capable satellite receiver with a CAM). But either way you need the viewing card, which I believe you can get for free or for a small fee from Sky.

The upshot is this Humax box won't enable you to view C4 HD (or e4 HD or Film 4 HD). Which is an utter **** really.

you need the sky viewing card to be able to use the plus / hd record function .. if you dont have one, you can buy one from sky for £25

Okay, so as i understand this:
You lose pause and record functionality when you cancel your Sky subscription
The Humax has no RF out

Can i use the cancelled Sky card in the Humax to get any additional channels?
Is there a link to a list of what channels i can receive on the Humax?
What other features are available on the Humax (iPlayer, etc)

I'm actually starting to think that the BT Vision box may be a better package, but i don't know how the channels compare.

yes, this is why I've bought a HD box with card (never subscribed to Sky before) you just need a valid card that's paired with the box.

Read more here. Read the bit about "what if I already have equipment" etc.

One word of warning with Comet - if you return the item after you've opened it, you won't get a full refund:

Provided the product is still unused, the process is almost the same except that, for products costing £25 or more, we deduct a restocking fee (10% of the original price up to a maximum of £99) from your refund to cover the cost of repackaging and restocking.
Alternatively you can choose a gift card credit for the full purchase price.
Remember to return all the original packaging.

A bit steep if you were just testing it out - if you're considering Freesat, might be best to get a cheap non-recorder box from Argos (bush are about £30) and you can return this once you've seen what you can get.... then plump for the Humax.

Better to be safe than sorry :)

Just a few answers if I can help...

As mentioned, no RF out, so you'll need a scart to rf modulator (ebay £20) and a remote infra red sender (powermid also about £20) or a wireless video sender (5.8ghz now about £30 from cpc.co.uk) which will send the video signal and take care of the remote. Aditional Humax remotes for this box about £20 on ebay...either option you'll lose a little in quality (hence why i bought another of these boxes for the bedroom !)

Sky charge you definately to record if you cancel their subscription...the humax box is subscription free forever (freesat)

To get the most out of this you'll need 2 satellite feeds (coax) from your dish, if you had sky plus or sky hd chances are you'll already have these. You can record 2 progrmmes at once and watch a 3rd (althouth the 3rd is limited to only a few channels)

If you buy one make sure you remove BOTH plastic films on the outside flap AND inside the flap, if you dont the remote will seem sluggish !

You can convert divx to mpg and then run a little app which puts these files in the right format to copy onto the humax for watching back (see hummy.org.uk)..i do this and it works well (the unit has 2 usb ports)

BBC iPlayer works well on this

Although this is a cracking price you might want to consider getting from richersounds where you can add a 5 year warranty for just over £20 (comes in just over £250 inc 5 year warrnty)
