Which gave this it's top rating, unfortunately if you check AV forums and others the UI is appauling compared to SkyHD, for over £200 I expect it to at least match SkyHD.

As far as content goes obviously it will never match Sky HD it is after all subscription less.

I have just cancelled with Virgin my V+ Box and installing Freesat in all rooms this weekend, on the differing boxes I have got (None Humax however) I find the EPGs on each of them just fine along with the UI (Grunding, Sagem and Technisat)

There again I only paid £89 from Currys Clearance Store for my 250GB Twin Tuner Sagem Freesat HD Recorder.

When you don't utilise the channels you are paying for either with Sky+ or Virgin+ the savings you make in the long run as far as I am concerned make whatever user interface you deal with worth it.

There again, I understand people who subscribe because they miss out on channels, but user interface alone is not worth paying out for thats for sure!

Good price - just got one from Comet! Came to just over £211 after discount code and Quidco, so not that disappointed. Not quite the cheapest yet though - it was £199.99 at Play a month or so ago.

Cheapest price at the moment though1

Good price and excellent box.
I just utilised the old sky dish for mine.
For doing more advanced stuff the UI can be a bit tricky...For day to day use the UI is good.
Which were right, this is the best PVR for Freesat+

Had my box now for sometime and paid £299 for it. Been worth every penny in my opinion. Guess it will never beat full Sly but then once you paid for it no more monthly payments required

CANT SEE HOW COCOBUFF IE CANCELLED VIRGIN CABLE USER STILL HAS TO ADD ON PRICE OF SKY DISH SATELITE FINDER ETC

User interface is fine on this both my parents are in their late 60's and manage to use it fine. They even know how to set it to non freesat mode to get a few extra channels. Great piece of kit at a bargain price.

Those who have this box, what does iPlayer run like through it? The thing that sets this above the competition for me is that it's geared up for iPlayer and when it comes out, ITV player.

I've had Sky+ (normal) for 18 months now, but really only watch what I could get on Freesat. Only stuff I'd miss is on Sky1 and Virgin (as you can't get Virgin on Freesat for some stupid reason).

Now Sky have put up my sub by £1 a month and it's hit the £20 mark, I'm looking to can it and get this soon.

Something that's always annoyed me about Sky, is that they charge you a sub AND show more adverts in an hour than ITV/Channel 4 would. Only Sky can stretch a 40 minute programme into an hour, and a 20 minute programme into half an hour.

But that's totally unrelated really.

Any other views on this box much welcome from me!

Got Sky HD @ the moment, if I was to cancel with them but keep the box is it the equivelant to Freesat HD?

They will charge you £10 per month if you want to use the box to record on.

The channel line up is similar but not identical.

Bear in mind that you will lose the ability to record and pause live tv though.

Not if you buy a Freesat PVR box like the twin tuner Humax or Sagem or the single tuner Technisat to which you can add an external drive.

Quad LNB and MK4 Dish £10 from Ebay (didn't have to pay postage as seller is local), then cable runs to the boxes I have £20, labour....free, do it myself, satellite finder (not necessary but useful) £5.....and I haven't cancelled Virgin Cable, just the TV part of it and saving £16 a month in doing so.

CrazyHorse1, I have a Sky HD box with no Sky HD subscription. I can still receive and record all BBC HD, CH4 HD, ITV HD etc etc. Any channel I receive I can still pause and record too. Hope that helps.
Just realised you may mean cancel Sky completely and not just the HD part. In that case then I believe you will lose the power to Pause, Rewind, Record etc etc

Does this mean you have no card in the box, or just a standard card and standard subscription (with no hd)

These are fantastic, throw your skybox away!

It's not quite the 'cheapest ever' though, I got mine from John Lewis when they did a price match with Dixons (a specific branch which mucked up the pricing) about a year ago, with a 2 year warranty included, 199 delivered :)
#18
you lose the record function when you unsubscribe from sky its a well known fact. you have yo pay them a fee if u want to keep it. if you have its a glitch

I strongly disagree, the GUI is absolutely fine, another point in its favour is that it does BBC iplayer well.

Jasee, I have the Standard Card I got when I first had HD. I then cancelled the HD subscription after 12 months and only pay the basic package a month which still gives me access to some HD channels (as mentioned) and also the ability to pause, record etc etc
#21
Tfish, I had already edited my post to reflect what you have said. I misread and thought Crazyhorse1 was just cancelling the HD option.

iplayer works fine, I set up home plugs for my parents and it streams ok over 85Mb (about 65Mb connection) rated homeplugs fine. The iplayer is a cut down version of the one on the BBC site, but it's ok.

Cheers for the replys peeps.

Thanks Towner, I was actually wondering about both options. I have just cancelled the HD sub but have kept the basic package. So from what you guys are saying i will still get the free HD channels like BBC ITV Film4 HD etc with the ability to record.

But if I cancelled Sky completely then I will still get HD channels but will lose all recording capability.

Thanks for the info.

Please tell me more about the non Freesat mode :) How do you get that option.

Go to the settings menu, highlight Manual Tune, then press:
Red, Green, Yellow, Blue, Green, Yellow, Blue
...which brings up a hidden menu where you can enable different satellites, configure motorised dish etc.

The only reason I will not get one of these in place of SKY is that there is no RF output to feed my other TV's. I know I could use a splitter but this will reduce the signal strength
#27
Not really "cheapest price yet". You can buy direct from Humax HERE with a 1 year warranty for £206 delivered.
#28
Amazon also selling this for £209.99 delivered if you prefer to buy from them
#29
Brilliant piece of kit , i cancelled Virgin + for this months ago , and when i put it in non-freesat mode i got over 400 FREE channels :)
(Just go to main menu , the option is there to change form freesat to non-freesat ,you dont need a hidden menu ?)

Yeah, they have since dropped the price to match.

Far prefer to buy from Amazon than this Mickey Mouse outfit.

Seems like a good price but I see there's also the 500GB model £299. Does anyone know if the hard disk size is the only difference between the two models or if there are any other changes?
#33
Are you able to get any sports or movie channels on Freesat weather it is subscripton based or free?
#34
Be aware that the IPlayer on this box does not yet have subtitles. Although this version is beta and the beeb are promising to add. But for a beta version it works pretty nicely, although EPG can be a bit slow.

Just been looking and if you want to go to a shop and get one over the bank holiday, £211 from Comet if you use 5% off voucher on products over £200 plus 3% Quidco ... cashback / discount works on collect in store orders.

Dixons 3% Quidco and Laskys 3.5% Quidco ... making this just over £200 with cashback from those two retailers ...

Edited By: storeyrich on Aug 28, 2010 22:27: Noticed Quidco also on Lasyks and Dixons

Micky Mouse outfit? I ordered from Laskys before and never had a problem. I have just ordered my Foxsat HDR box from them and am going to get local installer to put up dish (£60) as I have never had Sky because of the cost. Laskys are part of KESA Electricals plc which includes Comet.

Edited By: bigal06 on Aug 29, 2010 10:26: Added installation cost

Any Spanish channels in the 400? I also heard that you lose the synopsis of frogrammes in non freesat mode. Is this true?
#40
A superb box..... with motorised satellite system capabilites and a simple hard disk swap operation (just unscrew and format the disk in the unit) to upgrade the capacity to 1Tb+

Dont forget 3.5% Laskys cashback or go to Dixons for 3% Cashback or Humax direct for £179 for a grade A item.
