4) Remotes work well but Humax make the BT TV box so if you have one of these you need to only have one device on at a time.
There is a secret to avoid the BT TV (or any Humax conflict) :) with the BT TV box powered off, and your Humax box on, press and hold OK and 0 on the Humax remote for 5 seconds. You should get a prompt on screen to change the remote channel (frequency) - press between 2-5) and your done! Works great, and Logitech Harmony remotes recognise this too 8)
Thanks did this on the FoxSAT unit and it worked fine, took me a few goes this is a longer guide if anyone has issues.
Many thanks! Remember the newer YouView units are locked to code set 1 so you need to select a number from 2 to 6. The default for the FoxSAT is code set one same as the new YouView units.

Has anybody bought one of these in the past?
Do they last?
I got a couple of the PVR 1000 first one fine, second one was having issues with recording. I ran ran some checks on the drive (took it out and connect to a PC) bad sectors - Ran Spinrite on it. Reinstalled all fine. Both units now >4 years old used daily.
A couple of things about the Humax units
1) Picture quality is MUCH better than the units built into most TV (I've a Sony and the SAT image on the Humax is much better than the TV's SAT tuner) I fact I'd say of all the receivers the Humax picture quality on FreeSAT is very good. Audio is flawless
2) The Humax units I've seen are really well made and they run cool with virtually no noise except for the HD
3) On some model you can connect a USB drive and copy programs off the disk. However HD recordings are encrypted. The cheapest way to record unencrypted HD is with a Raspberry Pi and MyGiga DVB-2 USB stick £14 with a TV Antenna.
4) Remotes work well but Humax make the BT TV box so if you have one of these you need to only have one device on at a time.
5) If you are used to Sky you might be surprised how good the picture is and the units are cool to the touch!
6) The Power supply is built into the box and is well made I've had Humax kit that is 8 years old still going strong!
7) The newer humax models support on demand TV and you can push Youtube from your phone to the Humax (Andriod) not sure about other Phones.8) The older PVR TV units can use modified firmware allowing FreeSAT channels and unencrypted Astra in the same channel list. (There will be no or series record EPG for non FreeSAT channels)
Great find! Heat++
do the Astra channels include sport?
No
Bought twice from Humaxdirect in about 4 years. First was a HD-Fox-T2 Freeview (add a USB drive and it becomes an HDR) and the one that arrived on Tuesday was a Humax HDR-1100S 500GB Freesat.
The Freeview always has this ghosting problem, like encryption scrambling around the edges of images when the USB device is plugged in, but a few power offs and on fixes it. Without the USB it works as it should every time.
The Freesat gave me a shock tonight, as it appeared to have powered itself off. PSU showed no green light, after swapping cables and everything, leaving the PSU unplugged for 10 minutes, and trying again it came back to life.
The "Graded" stuff is a bit hit and miss, though it does come with the same 1 year guarantee.
You pays your money and takes your choice, but Freesat has way more interesting channels than Freeview.
Same here but with 2 new Freesat boxes. They kept going off. For some unknown reason, after 30 to 45 minutes they list power. I returned the first one and swapped it. When the second one did the same, I just asked for a refund. I am ditching sky and need a reliable Freesat recorder. Any advice?
Freesat set-top boxes with record seems to be a niche market, with Humax seeming to have the most products. There seems to be Bush and Manhattan offering lower cost options.
Freesat advertise these ones, including a Sagecom.http://www.freesat.co.uk/get-freesat/all-boxes

Manhattan is the best of these, but difficult to source, and the Grundig,Bush and Goodmans are the same but in different cases.

We bought the white 1010 wifi model last month as an upgrade for the old Foxsat box we had.

To be honest we've not recorded any programmes on it yet as you can watch anything you miss on the built in catch up services.
Incognitoso
What are you getting with free sat ?? All good TV channels need to pay .
+ High range smart TV have built in dual antenas Freeview + Sat + old type antena
Connect HDD via USB and record : )
But now all this sat and Freeview - Replacing by IP TV
BT Fibre coming to all houses so speed to stream dual or 3 stream at the same time will be now problem NONE cable NONE antenas NO Recorders as IP TV give pre -recorded

Not everyone can get Freeview due to location or the lack of having an aerial fitted, but still may want to watch live TV and record a few things....

So that has freesat inside, sorry I don't know much about these things could somebody explain what you need
With free view a standard aerial is needed.
With freesat you need a satellite dish (Ie previously had sky or had your own dish fitted).
Thanks
Can you use an external hdd on these?
just ditched sky and hooked up the 500gb, straight swap and no complaints. These also have an app for netflix built in which was a bonus. for non techies, 2tb is a good option, for best value, by the 500gb and upgrade yourself.

Ozodimal, was the remote you recieved white or black as the HDR1010s originally shipped with a white remote? I'm just wondering if it's a bit of pot luck as to what remote you get.
The remote was white, like the box, and both appeared brand new. Sorry not to make myself clear. I've got it running from my old Sky dish which I now have to upgrade to HDplus (ie quad LNB and additional coax down lead kit). Got in mind this one and would appreciate comments:-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120608902844?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Or this one with a single coax:-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270460946585?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Latter probably better for me, as I have an older dish than a Mk4 and will need an LNB adapter

Thanks

It arrived today (16/03/2016) and checked out all OK. Remote is the "universal" type on the RHS of Majumba's pic. All the accessories were neatly coiled, etc, in sealed packets and the 1010S itself appears to be in mint condition. Very pleased with the item and indeed with Freesat. Thanks OP!

For anyone else who has ordered one of the refurbs, did you get a programmable remote to be able to control the TV, and if so which model did you buy? Looking to get one myself and would prefer a programmable one if possible.
Thanks Majumba. Your HDR 1000S remote doesn't seem to match the picture in the Manual, where it says that the TV button will blink once when pressed. If it doesn't then it suggests that Humax's claim that refurbished items (including ancillaries) will "look and work as new" is not the case with your remote. You have a 1 year warranty and it should be honoured! Have you tried going through the TV setting procedure ignoring the fact that the TV button does not light? It might work if you haven't. Obviously something I'll have to look out for (same remote on the 1010S).

The remote I received doesn't control the TV like they normally do, which is really annoying. I've been in touch with Humax who were going to swap it until they found out it was a refurb. Grrr!!!
Have you viewed the instructions for harmonising the remote to your TV in the appropriate manual (1000 or 1010) via the links in my post #86 above? If so, are you saying that the codes given don't work?
The codes don't word as the remote is not universal. Humax confirmed this. I'm not saying everyone will receive a non-universal remote, but I did.
The universal control I got with my HD-1000S is on the right and the non-universal remote I got with the HDR-1000S is on the left. You can see that the STB and TV buttons don't illuminate. Some other buttons have been moved around too.

can I set up an account through the humax box then? will it let me record these channels & therefore be better or is it blocked from letting u record
In a word Humax S*** will never buy any of their products ever again fault occurred on mine just after 2 years after a re-tune same happened to my sisters both new products and CS wanted to me to pay over £100 to have it repaired and didn't want to compensate me in anyway what so ever, £160 for 2 years service unit looks like it just came out of the box Humax never again rubbish product rubbish company!
Must admit, the service we've received from Humax has been excellent. We bought a refurb from them not long ago and it was indistinguishable from new.
I just bought one earlier for £114.10 including the compulsory min £7 delivery

Be careful with Humax refurb. If it goes faulty outside a year, the customer services team won't help even though they should. They will try and sell you another one instead. My complaint is ongoing. Spend the extra, buy new and avoid the hassle. For a bit more you can pick up a new one from Argos.

"for a bit more" as in 1/3 of the price more?

Got one 2 days ago, delivered today. After 3-4 hours of testing decided to return it. Decoding quality of non hd channels is really bad, worse than my Goodmans. Surprised at that, as most reviews are excellent. Perhaps a dud?

I saw a mention of firmware,
I'm beta testing the new firmware that includes netflix on my 1010

When will this firmware be available to the public? This is the first mention I've seen of netflix on these boxes.

I was planning on getting an ariel instaled and going down the youview route for th sake of not having to get a seperate box for netflix but if this is getting netflix it'll save me having to shell out for an ariel.

For reference: my PC with 3 tuners, 32Gb RAM, fast drives and a 3.3Ghz hex core started to struggle above 10 simultaneous SD recordings, started dropping channels at 14. They're doing pretty good getting 4 out of low end hardware. Especially if they're HD streams.
What PVR software (I'm hoping Windows) do you use please?
Windows is not really very good at being a PVR I'm afraid Linux is king when it comes to PVR setups.

After many years and setups I find it much better than Linux due to better support for TBS drivers. ArgusTV/Win10 is rock solid. I find Windows as a front end more problematic as Kodi cannot maintain focus so here Linux based OSes are better IMHO. I run FireTV/Kodi and OpeneElec boxes with a 4 tuner TBS DVB-T2 card on the backend.

Also fire tv kodi and openelec are both Linux based.
Can't comment on Argus TV as I haven't used it but a headless Linux server that does everything, file server, Dlna, PVR, cloud backup etc. Is what I use and it has been faultless.

I also use kodi clients for true multiroom that can all access shared recordings, live tv etc independently. I tested recording four channels whilst playing 4 movies and it didn't fall over.

Shame this is Freest, been looking for a Human Freeview deal for a while. Heat anyway.

Thanks
I have a refurbed 1000s and it's been going strong for a while now.

Good points: Excellent pic quality on HD channels, pretty quiet, no subs required, catchup nicely integrated into EPG, will play video content via USB/DLNA, Showcase (TV picks from Freesat) can be handy to skim through weekly to pick up stuff to record, YouTube/BBC Sport+News apps a nice bonus, handy Search facility that picks up progs from the third input char onwards.

Bad points: Pointlessly clicky buttons on remote, can't re-order channels (can delete them though which is what I do), adds new channels without prompting you first, UI is clunky (too many menu levels in places and criminal lack of coloured button shortcuts), front panel LED often has massively distracting scrolling text (insulation tape fixed that for me!), a couple of apps have pay-per-view content which totally goes against the name Freesat in my books.

It's not a perfect box (and some buggy firmware updates haven't helped, though the latest update finally seems OK), but on balance, well worth the purchase, especially if you're ex-Sky.

Is it still the case that the HD recordings can not be transferred to Windows for editing?
From what I understand freeview is for from an aerial and freesat if signal off a satellite dish. Don't know if any do both. Been looking at the DTR models myself, sound better than the HDR? Can't remember what the difference is though, there's even a dtr-t6000 for hi-res recording of sport.
I have the 1TB wifi-less model. It's a great bit of kit. You can connect it to your internet router/firewall, and there's a FreeSat app for Android which in theory allows you to set the timer on the set top box; in practise I find it doesn't work reliably.

I've gotten into the habit of turning my humax off before I switch inputs: As soon as my TV indicates no signal from the Humax I switch input. As long as I do that it doesn't lose sound when I switch back.

Yes, it's a problem with the HDMI handshake. I can see you've figured out the steps to avoid it alright (I've described them above too)
I have a bug where any time I switch inputs on the tv, when I switch back to the humax the sound is gone and I have to restart.

I've decided to keep the box because I like Humax and I suspect a replacement will do the same with my TV - I've had a problem with my (LG) TV before where sometimes if you switch inputs, the colour goes pink and you have to switch channel again to get it back.

So I suspect Humax has problems with some TVs that aren't handling HDMI very well, but I don't think that's a good excuse - They should be making allowances for crappy TVs and my cheaper boxes and games console never had a problem.

I've gotten into the habit of turning my humax off before I switch inputs: As soon as my TV indicates no signal from the Humax I switch input. As long as I do that it doesn't lose sound when I switch back.

if when doing a factory reset to try and cure sound fault bug will i loose all my recorded programs on the hard drive ???
I don't think so, but I'm not certain. However, I don't think that will solve your problem anyway. It's simply a case of turning on your TV before your box, in my experience this will ensure you've always got sound (ie. making sure the box is off before you turn your TV on). If you do lose the sound, power the box down and unplug from the mains briefly (leaving the TV on).

Arggh!

I received mine this morning and was really, really pleased with it.

But then some of the menus started acting funny.
The Main menu highlighting stopped appearing so you didn't know what was being selected (Could have lived with that because you can see what's being selected by the icon on the left).

Then when tried to create my first folder, same thing but also the buttons wouldn't work and can't type in a name.

Have emailed them. Hope it's a known issue that's been patched.

Just wondering if it's one of those situations where they've had a return because of this, but rather than refurbishing they've just decided it looks alight, reset it and sent it straight back out.
...Actually it's working okay now.
You'd think that factory reseting the box was the biggest step you could take, but actually just turning it off and on again seems to have resolved all issues

Humax have great customer service I have had an ST one for 4 years and still works a treat.
I bought one of these from Humax and it was faulty as delivered when swopped for a Sky box in a working system, The replacement failed after 3 months. Humax were less than helpful. I eventually received a refund but don't take all the praise Humax receive as gospel. They are far from a perfect company and the large number of refurbs they offer must say something about the product quality.
Had mine about a year ... paid about the same price then. But i'd happily pay it again..worth every penny .
Looks good, I wish I'd bought a Humax instead of the sling enabled Echostar.
Very good equipment.

do not confuse this with the dtr-t2000 youview box.
this does not have access to ITV player, 4od or demand 5

Really? I didn't think there was a difference

Edit: You're right two different models, one with youview and one without. Thanks for mentioning this!

Wouldnt powerline be better than wifi?

Yes, powerline would generally be better, however they don't work well in my flat (ancient wiring I think) and I have a humax HDR fox freeview recorder and use an edimax dongle with it and it's fine, never had any issues with it, and it cost less than a tenner. Not sure if you were commenting about the OP's post or mine, I only mentioned the dongle so that the OP was aware that I did realise the difference between the 2 boxes I talked about.

Just in general to wifi, always prefer wired myself, but if wired isnt an option then wifi it is.

Normally this price for Grade A, Price you've quoted is for brand new with 2 yrs warranty. The refurbs only come with 1 yr. Personally I'd wait for them to have more 500GB ones at £129. (requires a dongle for wifi though)

I'm sorry but you're wrong. They are normally this price for the 1000s model. This is the updated version: 1010S.

They normally retail for £240. The 1000s is cheaper.

Yes they retail for £240 for a brand new product with 2 years warranty, this is not a brand new product but a refurb (Grade A) and has a 1 year warranty. This is humax direct's standard price for this product as a refurb (which is what I said in my first post).

I have two Humax freesat receivers and the remotes on both are not very good - erratic performance.

I hope the remotes on the more recent models are better if Humax has dealt with this problem which ahs been reported before on this website.

Presumably you can directly connect by cable to the router without requiring the dongle

I assume the catch up requires an ethernet cable to be attached? How much is the wifi dongle and where is the best place to get it?

EW-7711UTn - Mini-size with built in antenna (Amazon Rating 4/5 - 159 votes)

After lots of research I found Edimax have the same wifi chip as the Humax Wifi dongle. A search on eBay can get you a genuine Humax dongle for £8.90. But I bought the Edimax mini size with high gain antenna for £10.95 which will get you a better signal. It's smaller than I expected so great for behind a box with it much clearance.

Try any of these, all tested and work on the HDR-1000s.

Does anyone know if this is compatable with the freesat app on the play store, there doesn't seem to be any info on the link so I assume not but just want to make sure
Try the Freesat site:
http://www.freesat.co.uk/app/remote-record
and
http://www.freesat.co.uk/get-freesat/freesat-plus-with-freetime/233947
ie good news for "HUMAX HDR-1000S"

BTW THE "-G" on the model name is just "graded" ie not a separate/distinct model, just a descriptive addition by Humax Direct.
