  No, but soft water is a lot nicer to bath/shower in and also washing up in my opinion ;0)

  No but can cause irritation for people with sensitive skin / eczema. Main benefit is the lack of limescale in appliances / on fittings etc.

  How long is a piece of string? Depends entirely on water consumption - for us it's a bag a month.
