Gaming

Game fans won’t want to miss our dedicated area, where they will find some of their very favourite stars. Last year’s impressive showing included iconic brands from Nintendo and Namco Bandai. Trading card game aficionados too will be able to indulge in their favourite hobby with like minded players from around the UK, with tournaments TBC.
Anime and Manga

Fans of anime and manga (Japanese animation and comics) come together at HYPER JAPAN- and with companies like Manga UK bringing DVDs and J-comics, as well as Kodansha, publishers of series like Fairy Tail and Attack On Titan! That’s before even mentioning the stores upon stores laden with goods; we’ve got enough exhibitors and events lined up to satisfy even the most ardent of enthusiasts, giving fans the chance to get their hands on genuine character merchandise and hard to find items. Expect a huge selection of books, figures and other goods featuring your favourite characters.

Tickets for children under 10 are free, but they must have a ticket, which you can purchase alongside your adult tickets. No-one will be allowed entry to the show without a ticket, including children.

I'm personally going because there should be some good japanese food (and a sake tasting thing too, at extra cost though...)

I got my tickets for £12 for 2 (via Amazon local, would've posted but it was almost OOS by the time I saw it! So this isn't a bad price at all compared to the RRP, heat added.

Yay time to see more neckbeards wearing fedoras and a trench coat to their ankles....

Anime is cool and all (I watch it) however I bow my head in embarrassment and hate when these Neckbeard, My little ponying loving, weeaboo, otaku F*ck up wannabe idiot ass wipe take it to the extreme. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, STOP RUINING SOCIETY!

My little pony is for little girls not for 20 year old males, you guys should stop drinking mountain dew, wear trench coats and fingerless gloves with your fedora while equipping yourself with meme t-shirts or of your favorite indie game and dress appropriately and not what characters in anime wear, because you guys are way to fat or ugly.

I'm done reciting my hate.

It's a pretty good day if you have an interest in japanese culture. I went last year and there were stalls for foreign language courses, food, drink, gaming, music, manga merchandise, CCGs, clothing... quite a wide range. I think it is worth about a tenner though if I am honest however Kero Kero Bonito are playing on the live stage and i think they are fantastic so I am slightly biased :)

@MadonnaProject I went last year and I'm going again this year with the Japan Centre deal. The food is great, and the games section is pretty cool, but there's other nice cultural stuff like the geisha and martial arts. Not everybody's a weeaboo, you judgemental douchebag

Notice how each and everyone of them will **** you of for being unhappyy, racist, judgemental etc and then turn around and do the exact same thing? Maybe truth does hurt. Oooohhh and look how passive aggressive and undertone angry they are its almost psychotic. But meh, that's very japanese culture a la anime though. At least they're committing to the part right? LOL

I went last year with my girlfriend, and it was awful. We had to queue for a good hour+ in the rain, even though we pre booked. The attractions inside were just poor. There was so few stalls/attractions that most of the building was just empty. The gaming area was tiny, there was a couple of cars that you weren't allowed to touch, a surprisingly low amount of cosplay, a rather dull Karate event, which was akin to the kind of thing school fates show 5 year old kids, and a dozen merchandise stands with uninspired and overpriced.

The rest was just travel agents, and Lyca mobile stalls, and an extremely limited range of food and Sake stalls. (The Sake one required about £20 just to sip a few different Sake).

Honestly it was very disappointing, we were ready to leave after about 30 mins. We stuck around a few hours but we wish we didn't. Everyone we spoke to there said it was awful.

What day did you go? Crucial question. Went there on Saturday or Sunday last year and the atmposphere was much more lively than you've described. Packed with cosplayers and although the stalls were typical anime goods stalls, there was enough for at least around 3-4 hours leisure.

I do agree with the lack of "interesting" stalls though. Most don't really even touch on Japanese culture and heritage.

I have been to this too and would agree it is very poor. I have a general interest in Japanese games and popular culture, I'm not hardcore into anime etc. All the "attractions" were like a westerners lazy take on "Japanese things" ..it was all quite tacky, insane queues for everything and little or nothing of any real interest. The whole thing was a bit of a rip off and totally underwhelming. I wouldn't go again.

Didn't seem too out of place to me ;) That persona is pretty typical of Japanese characters on telly. In real life, they're much more reserved though (except in a karaoke place).

Eek - was primarily planning to go with the missus so we could make it an outing with the baby and get Japanese food from less westernised sources.

Edit: Found a review that seems to put my fears at rest - http://www.ukanifest.co.uk/news/2013/7/27/review-hyper-japan-saturday-27th-july-2013

Seems that there were two markedly different expectations though since you thought there wasn't enough food stands while the reviewer felt spoiled for choice! 8)

Just reading some of the reviews on here, I am surprised by how anyone could have such different reactions. As I mentioned before, me and the girlfriend talked with a fair few people there, and they all stated they thought it was really poor.

She went to the one the year before and said it was dramatically different, and much better experience, so there's always a chance this years could be better I guess.
Personally I was just very disappointed, it felt so halfarsed. After a few hours we were both hungry and looking at the different stalls, but the things on offer were limited and had huge lines, and the prices - as expected- weren't cheap. In the end we just went to one of the food shops in the building, so maybe that reviewer is including the non asian food shops in the building. He evens says there were lines everywhere for food, but they turned out to only serve beer.. so I'm not sure I understand his point there. It's possible my expectations were higher than his, the office I work has lots of food stalls around it, so have more choice available to me there.

One thing I notice with the reviews of HyperJapan, is the few number of photos taken. I too had a camera, but found so little there to actually take a photo of, that I didn't bother much. The fact that the reviewers took so few too, would indicate the same.

The reviewer says he missed the martial arts demonstrations, so I'm not sure why hes so excited about it, if he'd seen it it's likely he'd have felt as disappointed as I. He mentioned a Robotics Innovation demonstration, but I saw no such thing.

Anyway, at the end of the day the tickets are £8.75 each, so if you have nothing better to do, you can go along and leave if you're bored. If we didn't have to wait outside for so long in the rain, we probably would've just wandered in, looked around and left, without being so disappointed.
