Using the award-winning BioWare Infinity Engine developed by BioWare for Baldur's Gate, players create a party of adventurers in the frigid north to combat monstrous Cyclops's and frost giants that dwarf the player characters as they search for an evil lying deep within the Spine of the World. Icewind Dale offers character advancements from levels one through 15 in the most recent adaptation of the AD&D rules under license from Wizards of the Coast.

Icewind Dale - Heart Of Winter:

Continue the adventure in the Ten Towns with Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter, the expansion pack for Icewind Dale. From the award-winning Black Isle Studios, Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter uses Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rules and is set in the Forgotten Realms universe. With additions that both increase playability, like the higher experience cap, and add the technical enhancements asked by consumers such as 800x600 screen resolution, Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter will continue the success that is expected from Black Isle Studios.

Just be careful. This looks like the old Window XP version. Might not work on 8/10.
Amazing for the price though!

can you actually get these looking OK these days? I mean so they are playable like the screenshot? I remember going back to FF7 years after playing it and finding it looked so horrific i couldn't play it

There are widescreen mods for these original versions that allow you to play in higher resolutions.

Wow, where did they dig these up from? They're not even the version that includes Icewind Dale II!

Even the original retail discs from 2000 (Win 98 era) work on Windows 10, apparently. You'll probably need to use your fair share of mods/workarounds to get it working how you want it, though. If in doubt, get the GoG version which will be all prepatched for you, or there's the new Enhanced Edition which is a pretty faithful recreation.

The screenshot is how it looked originally so, yes, that's how it still looks. You'll be able to use resolution mods to play it in 1929x1080 or whatever but that will just expand the viewable area, it's not going to enhance the textures or anything. And when you say FF VII looks horrific, you're probably talking about the blocky 3D models - they were criticised at the time too. The 2D prerendered backgrounds have aged quite well, especially if you look at the PC/PS4 version. Icewind Dale being completely 2D gives it an advantage - it looked good at the time and has aged well.

You can get the new hd version on steam for cheap when its on sale looks miles better and has some interesting tweaks, id say the old games are still very much passable i mean i still play icewind dale 2 every now and then for the nostalgia but so far no remake since beamdog said they have no plans to mess with anything using 3rd edition rules too much work for them i reckon

Cheers, I'll look into it over xmas. I still wouldn't mind player Baldurs Gate again but worried it would look truly awful - if BG and IWD look like that screenshot I'm more than happy
