Very good price, but be aware that one owner only rated this one star with this comment, and several have commented that the connecting poles are too short!

Looks good but is DANGEROUS! Yesterday, the top shelf of the stand exploded into a thousand pieces - the noise and shock were considerable. Glass was spread over a large area including a spot where the grandchildren had been sitting earlier. We were nowhere near the stand at the time and were in the process of deleting a programme which had been recorded prior to turning the tv off.

We bought the stand with a Samsung 40" tv almost 4 months ago. The stand has a 30 day warranty only.

The purpose of this review is to warn you that the glass on the stand is capable of exploding.

well this review doesnt makes any sense. stop buying whisky bottles then as they may explode as well. it was a tv stand not a chair to sit on

Exploding glass!

This is what happens to toughened glass. It is a safety feature, and avoids sharps of glass which are far more dangerous than the little pieces.

However, I am not sure what could have caused the glass to do this.

Great value for a table bomb. Hot

Looks like a great deal at the price to me but my mate Dennis says he needs a taller unit than this - any ideas where he can get one at a good price?

Did people really pay £199 for this :o

Bought one of these units when it was £50 off Amazon - the supports are at worst fiddley, but all-in-all a doddle to put together. The only thing it misses is a cable tidy, but at this price, so what?

Worth £199? Dunno, but at £39-99 it's a steal!

Hot!

At £199 I'd expect a cable tidy!

As for the glass "exploding" it is very possible. If the glass was poorly made or had a weak point in it then the weight of the tv would eventually set it off. Explode may be an inappropriate word but it could quite easily happen. The review in question makes perfect sense.

ice cold!

8mm toughened safety glass should be fine with anything up to 50kg.

so unless you have something along the lines of a PANASONIC TH-50PZ70B (or similar) then you should be fine.

This post is such a coincidence as my glass stand exploded yesterday that was similar to this one, and for that reason I'm staying far away from glass stand for now on (although the premium in the description may have given me second thoughts about giving this product a chance). I have a wall mount and used the stand to store my consoles and other things however I left the top shelf of the stand empty and yet it still exploded while I was watching TV. It was quite bizarre that it exploded with no weight and without contact on it. To my annoyance, it took quite a while to clean up after and I hate cleaning :-P.

Edit: Screw it! I need a stand and there is nothing else in that price range that looks remotely good... :-(

Was in Morrisons [ Speke ] earlier and they had these in for £35.00, unfortunately did'nt take a good look at the product as I don't need one. May be worth a look?

If anyone is that worried but still fancies one, take the top sheet of glass to a glass merchant to use as a template and get a sheet of 10mm toughened safety glass cut (with polished edges).

that should withstand almost anything.

Yes, but it would likely cost more than the whole stand itself.

Toughened glass has stress lines running through it, so any influence on a weakness (change in temperature) can push it over the edge, and thats where the miraculous exploding stand comes into play. Its not gonna happen to many ppl, but it will to some.

Of course, with an expensive tv on, its a concern - just make sure your home insurance covers it

I bought a similar stand from Tesco's for £27 4 weeks or so back. It was a deal posted up on here (will try and find the link), and for the money one can't complain. My one criticism of the Tesco stand is that it doesn't have a cable tidy unit at the back to hide all your leads/cables, so depending on how many leads/cables you do have the back of the stand can end up resembling spaghetti junction (and remember these are made of glass, so there is nothing to hide cables behind except the leg supports!).

For £39 you can't go wrong really, so anyone voting this deal cold is being daft! As one poster points out though - whether anyone would pay the full RRP of £199 for one of these is another matter entirely!

2008 reviews say they paid £50 for it, I assume its end of line with a further £10 off. Don't think this will have ever been £200. Not voting hot or cold.

I thought this was a plasma only stand but i have been mistaken

Sadly, as a consequence of the manufacturing process of toughened glass, there will always be a risk ( however slight) of the glass shattering. In the grand scheme of things, these are few and far between ( consider how much toughened glass is manufactured) so, by and large though the pros vastly outweigh the cons. I can appreciate it does alarm people when it does happen though!

In short, take the plunge and get yourself a bargain !

It was reduced from £199 when I bought it for £50.......
#22
dont online retailers have to conform with the laws which state they MUST have been on sale at the"orig price" for at least a month or so
#23
£199 errrrrr no surprise they had to reduce it lol

£39 looks a good price though:thumbsup:

Great price. Not sure about the explosions. I was looking for a stand a while back though and £39.99 for anything that can carry above 37" is a very good price. Hot.

Several reviews going back to last year talk about paying £50 for it. I don't think it was ever sold at £199.
