This thing seems to get posted at least once a month, often more. Actual resolution is 640 x 480, which is 0.3Mp, a long way short of the 5.0Mp interpolated resolution quoted.

Can get the same or better for less from almost any Chinese website that does cheap webcams.

I don't mean to sound negative, but it annoys me when manufacturers and retailers deliberately fudge the facts to make something look much better than it actually is. :(

I got this a few weeks ago. For the price u cant complain. The lens doesn't come off. (At least its not when I pull or twist it)

I bought a Microsoft H5D-00003 Lifecam Cinema Webcam, they are really good to use with a telescope as it fits into most stripped eye pieces - example shown on the pictures section on Amazon (Also a REALLY good price for this webcam!)

Hope it helps!

If he's super interested in getting an image of a planet or the moon this webcam is the pick of the bunch and on a reasonable price too:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-H5D-00003-Lifecam-Cinema-Webcam/dp/B002I3IRY8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=computers&qid=1295665012&sr=8-1

It can be relatively easily modified to fit a 1.25" eyepiece (no soldering or anything like that).

Otherwise it work reasonably well with a roll of electrical tape holding it in place :)

iKasu isn't a particularly quality brand - they make cheap MP4 players as well that review poorly. Heat added, as you'll probably get more than what you pay for considering the delivery, but...

I have an Ikasu webcam that is VERY similar to this. The lens is on a very fine thread so that you can turn it to focus. It does unscrew completely so that you can remove the lens. The thread is plastic though, so it's very easy to get cross threaded and strip when you re-fit it.

Regarding Linux: I've not been able to get it working in Linux. I've scoured the web and spent many hours reading forums and trying out the various suggestions people have made. I've tried many different flavours of Linux without success. The best (and only) result I got was a terrible, un-useable picture (known issue) using Ubuntu 9.10.

The camera works perfectly well in Windows XP.

From what I read, it seemed that the general consensus on the Linux forums was that Logitech webcams were Linux compatible and tended to work with the minimum of fuss.

Try focalprice.com or dealextreme.com - they both have a huge range of webcams (huge range of everything!). I have ordered a few things from them in the past, delivery takes a couple of weeks, but they are very cheap.

Dealextreme appear to have a couple of cheap webcams with microphones, a 0.3Mp one (like the Ikasu) for around £3 and a 1.3Mp (not interpolated) for around £4, delivered.
