Yes - its right in the city centre - and yes - it will manic on the roads when it opens. I dont live in Southampton now (my home town) but I cant wait for it to open as we are only 35 miles away in Dorset.

The southampton store does not open til Feb 09 so you are not likely to be able to take advantage of this sale (at least not in southampton)!
#13
Im sure I got a e-mail about this last week and you can also get a free lunch???

Ikea family members rings a bell regarding the free meal
#14
It would take more than a mere sale to get me to go anywhere near an IKEA.... I appreciate it is decent value, however I value my time and sanity waaay too much! But each to their own!

EDIT: Free lunch?....now your talking....NOT - I prefer M&S meatballs and hotdogs!! :whistling: HeHe.

We had a lady of Swedish origin where I used to work. She was endlessly amused at the esteem with which Ikea is held in the UK.

She reckoned that in Sweden, Ikea was on a par with the old MFI.

The latter view is held by many in the UK too, but you pay's your money and takes your choice. :whistling:

Well I might brave the crowds for this one, need some stuff for the flat.

There is a lot of tat in Ikea but it's generally good value for money, modern / stylish stuff - hence popular.
#18
Is this a proper sale, or a Woolworths promise more than they deliver sale
#19
re city centre in southampton

coventry was the 1st city centre store. It was busy for about a day
They even changed access routes to accomodate it, and in fact there is now less traffic than there was before

How do we sign up to the email alerts?
#21
This is nationwide i take it?
#22
dont order anything that needs to be delivered or fitted
expect 3x delivery days to be broken & then over quotting for fitting & then asking for more
on fitting day as they deny they priced somthing that you thought was included.
#23
anyone have any idea what is in the sale, after bedroom furniture

Aye mate, let me get that confidential list out that's probably not even been made up yet.

The Manchester one is always empty - must be the least popular Ikea ever!
#26
no Ikea anywhere near me - have to make do with items i find in a skip now MFI has closed hehe
#27
Well, the council are using the excuse of Ikea coming to start charging people for using parking that is currently free for 2 hours. Oh - and also IKEA plan to charge for parking - but guessing that it will be returned if you spend money there.

No excuse for the city to start charging in the free parking spaces! :(

If only they had a store in Brighton :(

Croydon is only an hour-ish away straight up the A/M23 (suppose the £10 petrol is a bit of a pain). I've always wondered why they didn't put a store in Brighton as well I think it would do well as it's a sort of modern city without stereo typing it too much.

Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!! I'd chew my arm off rather than drag around IKEA.
#32
Why is this thread hot?. We don't know how good the sale will be until 18th.
#33
The opening of the Ashton ("Manchester") store was over-hyped on the local news with warnings of queues, including weeks worth of signs on the motorways advising to avoid the area due to an "event". For the first week or so of opening, they coned of miles of road to form controlled queues to the store. When it came to it the place was empty, and seems to have stayed so ever since! Far less stress, reasonable queues at the checkouts (though they never open them all), and there's always plenty of parking spaces available - just go to the roof-top car park.

As for the sales, I've found of recent years they've been pretty naff. They rarely seem to discount anything you'd actually want in your house - just paper maché bathroom cabinets and cardboard recliners.
#34
thanks holly. do u need to take ur fasmily card with u?
#35
I'm going to head to Ikea tonight to pick up some picture frames, will see if the staff have any idea what is expected to be discounted.
#36
