Imation 128GB External USB 3.0 SSD £31.00 @ Sold by Europe Sellers Kings and Fulfilled by Amazon

£31.00 @ Amazon
Cant find much info on this, but seems a reasonable price nevertheless. Edit, could also be the same as the TDK branded ones. I believe both brands have now winded down their consumer business. Read More

Genuine question - why would anyone want this instead of a USB drive of the same capacity?

speed. the cheaper 128gb pen drives are slow at writing data (e.g. 20MBps) an SSD via usb 3 could achieve 200MBps read and write if not more (limited by the speed of the ssd). an equivalent quick pen drive is normally much more expensive

Hot.
Are they compatible with USB 2?

£31 will buy you a very fast 128GB USB3 stick so unless you need something that you can rest your coffee cup on too I don't see the value in this.

But if enough people do then I'll start putting USB sticks in shoe boxes and calling them "External SSDs" too

More than just speed, quality of the flash memory is better, controller is better, better error protection. I bought to store my music on as I don't want it to disappear in a flash (pun intended) and also want it to be transportable.

Even just for speed, an SSD with a proper controller is going to score a lot more IOPS than flash drive unless the flash drive also uses an SSD controller (like the Mushkin Ventura Ultra does - although that uses Sandforce controller which makes me weary).
Sure for storing big files like videos IOPS barely makes much difference but if you want to run an operating system from it, IOPS will make a huge difference.

Missed it :( Probably a good thing though.

iF You want to store lots of small files eg mp3's something like this will destroy a std flash drive. They will often slow down to less than 10Mb/s whereas this will be far faster. Just in general much faster.

speed on a 128 BG drive?

I'm in the this product makes no sense camp! also I can't recalled the last time a USB drive failed on me, anyway its a back up right?

I would just add, Buy a good USB Pen drive of the same capacity.
It's smaller and faster. This is a good deal price wise, but makes no sense practically.

Sorry, I don't agree. The USB 3.0 Pen drive will be faster and handle small files better. But there won't be much in it speed wise as they are both similar technologies. Just that the interface on this SSD is a little slower in some circumstances. And it depends on buying a good quality Pen drive.

Is this basically a ssd in a usb caddy? If so can it be removed. I'm thinking it could make a good swap for a laptop hard drive and you can use the caddy?

Was thinking exactly the same thing. Looks like it to me.

Most usb flash drives use the lowest quality flash, and basic controllers . I would never use a flash drive for long term storage, but ymmv. Even the best seem to be fairly slow at writes. I intend to buy only good quality usb drives in future.
