America's quest to put a man on the moon, while both fascinating and inspiring, has been well covered on film, perhaps most notably in FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON and APOLLO 13. Add to that a space program that by the early 2000s ranked near Abscam in terms of public interest, and it's easy to see why the documentary IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON might be a tough sell. Yet this simple, stylish look at the Apollo space program is a quietly powerful rumination on the nature of patriotism, heroism, and humanity.
Director David Sington utilises a narrator-less structure that intercuts stunning stock footage with insightful commentary from the surviving astronauts who walked on the moon. There are no experts, no voiceovers, and no recreations. It's a style that works quite well, recalling the work of Errol Morris. While the space shots and the behind-the-scenes footage of NASA operations are fascinating, the astronauts--Buzz Aldrin, Dave Scott, and Alan Bean, among them--are a revelation. Variously witty, heartfelt, modest, and humbled when discussing their journeys into space, it's easy to understand why these men were heroes to a generation. Perhaps the most powerful aspect of this film is the way in which the viewer is reminded of how genuinely stunning the Apollo mission was for not only the United States, but the world. One need not be reminded that 1969 was a tumultuous year for Earth, and Neil Armstrong's famous one small step for man literally united the planet, giving true credence to the latter half of his famous statement. The movie posits that for one fleeting moment the world was together and at peace. IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON expertly recreates that moment, without a shred of excess patriotism, pretence, or sentiment.

moon landing never happened!

but this is going to be good viewing - purely for the 1080p

It is true, the moon landings never happened, the proof is out there for anyone with an enquiring mind to establish for themselves. Investigate the physics and science of space travel and you will understand.

I have seen this, I wasn't particularly impressed.

Wow. Why not try pointing your 'enquiring' mind in this direction... http://www.clavius.org/

Hot deal btw.

The fact that there's people out there who believe this conspiracy stuff scares the hell out of me. 400,000 people were involved in the Apollo project and not a one of them seems to have come forward to say it was all a fake - and the fact you're calling a lot of decent, brave people liars offends my sensibilities . At what point did they start faking footage - Gemini, Mercury? Get a grip.

Good buy, BTW.

Great film, remember when we had this at my cinema, t'was awesome but very poorly received, people just don't wanna see a documentary at the cinema I guess :(

Hot deal.

yep, the moon landng goes against the laws of basic physics - so it must have happened..........

absurd - 400,000 people may have been involved back in the day; perhaps they were all dunces - the moon walkers believed it happened............

it didnt happen because it goes against the basic laws of physics - the allegations of the moon landings not happening is not the conspiracy - the fact that people claim it to have happened is the conspiracy

good deal anyways - great sci-fictional movie - it may as well ahve been apollo13 with tom hanks!

Which particular century where your notions of physics set in concrete? The 17th? And which bit is impossible? Landing on the moon? Orbitting the moon? Or leaving the Earth's orbit - cuz that might present a problem for satellite television...

By the way, we're currently bouncing lasers off equipment left on the moon surface. How did that get there?

was the US flag actually floating on the moon?

Yeah, I'm wondering what 'physics' it violates to send manned misions to the moon. It was a technical challenge, but not a physical impossibility.

Wow, all of that NASA archive is going to look so much better on Blu-Ray. Not.

It was shot on film and on video cameras. A re-mastered higher definition digital edition would look better for the film stuff.

oh no, the moon landings never happened... Just like the Twin towers were destroyed by the US government, Princess Diana was murdered by the royal family and the shape shifting lizards rule the Earth.

Conspiracy theories are hilarious. You really think that kids sat at home "analysing" low quality video are finding the "Truth"? If you're going to spout crap and disrespect one of the biggest milestones set in Human history, at least use your own mind for once and read the real academics' explanations of the physics etc, at clavius.org as pointed out above.

TBH, I'm smelling a bit of a troll here, because now that LRO has provided images of the Apollo equipment on the Lunar surface, together with the tracks the astronauts and lunar rovers made, to say it never happened is on a par with believing the Earth to be flat in my book.

As the earlier poster said, 400k people were involved; obviously all of them are liars.

Good grief, governments have a hard enough time keeping believable things a secret these days; it would have been easier to actually do it, than to fake doing it and keep it secret :p

I know I shouldn't feed the trolls. But anyway, kudos for the OP.

If they've actually gone to the bother. More likely, a quick upconvert and grab a few more quid.

Looking around the intarweb a bit; 3 five star and 1 four star 'review' on Amazon. Reviews of the DVD edition in 2007 are positive. Some German reviews (sorry, can't read German).

I've just re-watched a Channel 4 discussion programme from 1997 called "For the Love Of....Lunar Conspiracy".

On it was one of the 'leading lights' of the hoax theory called David Percy. He doesn't believe that men could fly to the moon and return safely using human technology. He does, however, believe in alien visitations. So, obviously, a man with all his marbles in the right holes.

Me? I've ordered the disc.

I have this (b'day present - hope they didn't pay too much) and it's a very good film with some great comments from the Apollo astronauts. The high-def obviously isn't 'used' for all the footage but some has been remastered (not that I've inspected it, but it does look very pretty).
This film has some of the most awe inspiring footage of the Apollo program you'll ever see (the rest is on 'For All Mankind' which I think is on bluray in November).

Lol, it's not about photos.

Put a man on the Moon in a pressurized suit in a vacuum, he can't move a muscle, in a vacuum the suit just wants to pop.

People produce heat, lots and lots of heat. Put a man in a suit in a vacuum and he's going to fry. You cannot dissipate heat in a vacuum. Ever heard of vacuum flasks?

The Moon landings were a political, not a scientific endeavour, failure was not an option. There was only one way to ensure success ..........

What the heck are you on exactly?
Seriously Are you having a reality malfunction or what?

Err is there no vacuum in orbit? people have been in space for what 40 years or more
doing space walks no less
but no the moon she is to strange for us puny humans?
Whether or not we should be prancing about or actually doing mass colonies in space is a different matter.

Fry you say that what their very expensive space suites are for
for there to have been fake moon landing - thousands of people would have to be involved
thats simply not viable

even if it was political en devour mainly, you think no significant science was done?
why all the flippin geologist then exactly.

in Fuel terms it only requires 50% more fuel to goe to the moon and back compared to achieving orbit - so you could argue that the conspiracy goes the other way and the crying shame is that more wasn't done in the years since

the space shuttle eat up too much funds as can be argued about the space station ISS
and the costly wars like vietnam also ate up funding

so now where are we we have people 40 years on who are clueless and lonely craving attention
making up rubbsh

ever scene an F111 fly past
or know thay had planes like SR71 in the darn 60's

the fact that the Russians fail only b'cos their rocket wasnt ready also the main guy passed away
would they not scream bloody murder first???

instead of a few fringe weirdos with dodgy logic

maybe the movie Capricorn One effected you too much as a kid!

Just watch the Mythbusters special on the moon landings, covers all the major hoax claims.
Apollo showed what we could achieve if money was no object, let us hope the same is true for current - less polictical - endeavours like the LHC and ITER.

Heat cannot be disipated in a vacuum? Oh well then, I guess we'll all fry here on the Earth as well as it is surrounded by vaccuum and constantly getting light energy from the sun for the past 4 billion years. Oh wait, we haven't. I wonder where all that energy went...
Balloon suits? That's a critical misunderstanding of the tech involved.
