And an i7 Extreme at 4.4 and you're asking if you should stick with an i5 ????????????????????? oO
:)
an i7 990x at 4.4Ghz will utterly beast its way past a current model i5, an i5 3570 is faster per core per clock, but not by much, and the 990x has 50% more cores... AND it's clocked at 4.4Ghz in this instance (that's not stock however)
I am not sure there is a game that uses more than 4 cores.

3570k is the CPU to get for gaming. Read reviews on actual websites instead of crap on here.
This is a good deal for the i7 3770k - I was looking at this CPU until I noticed the i5 3750k is pretty much the same without HT.
The i5 3750 retails for around £160, No way is it worth paying £80 or 50% more for HT and about 5% increase in performance.
I know what I would pick, That being said. Heat added as it's a good deal for the i7 3770k
But I'm holding out for the next gen

The age of the part really isn't relevant in these times of marginal generational performance improvements, the i7 990x, when clocked at 4.4Ghz will absolutely outrun any i5 at stock clock, and will keep pace with an i5 clocked up to similar levels. (It's actually likely to outscale an i5 as it has a wider memory bus to keep it fed at high clocks)
There are very few games that use more than 4 threads, and even fewer that meaningfully benefit, but extra processor power to grow into is never a bad thing (witness how E8400's at 4Ghz from 2008 are basically worthless now but Q6600's are still kinda useful)
Ultimately it's a matter of how much he's been asked to pay for the 990x, if it's similar money to an i5 or even an Ivy 3770K setup, then it's a no brainer. if it's more expensive then it becomes a more complex equation.

Thank you :3
Disagree with most of what the Toraz person says.
As pointed out the 990x is quite old and about on a par with the 2500k. The 3570k is more efficient but the 2500k is a slightly better clocker.
The i7 here seems to be about 10-20% faster for 56% more money. That is why i5 is vetter value because it also clocks pretty well. If you need the extra power then get the i7. You should also bear in mind the latest generation cpus will require a socket 1155 mboard and then prferably a z68 or z77 chipset depending on cpu.

You wouldn't buy a chip with HT if you only use it for gaming.
HT is excellent for working with video.
No probs.
Feel free to PM me if you want some i chipset info :)

what would be a good motherboard to go with this? i was thinking of an Asus P8Z77-V PRO around £140
i would want RAID, USB3 on-board the mobo.
