Was looking for a cheap replacement Sata drive for my laptop. Seemed like a good deal. It's listed as 'The Techguys' but it says it's guaranteed to be a WD or SAMSUNG.

An 8 year old laptop might be an IDE drive, this is a Sata drive, best check before ordering.

what's the chances of this being 5400? i recently installed a 7200 with windows 7 on my netbook and it heats up a lot more compared to 5400, though i'm not sure if its the operating system thats making it heat up like so
#15
Guaranteed to be a Samsung HM160HI or Western Digital WD1600BEVT - both the Samsung and WD are 5400 rpm.

Saying that my last Pc world 2.5" drive order was guaranteed to be a Samsung or Toshiba and I got a Hitachi!

By the look of it, yours is an IDE drive so no unfortunately it wouldn't work.

You need an ide (pata) drive, you can get converters for Desktops, but I doubt they will work well with the small space available in a laptop.

These drives are both SATA II.

The Samsung HM160HI is listed at scan and ZDnet with 3Gb/s transfer rate and SATA300 which is the just another way of saying SATAII. If it was really only SATA it would be listed at half that rate.

Looks like Samsung are using SATA in the drive description just to identify the connection type not to indicate the actual transfer speed of the SATA drive.

Cheers for that looks simple enough

Thanks. Didn't even consider that and already ordered. Just checked and its this one

from a Packard Bell easynote E3265 (which cost £1100 back then, I wouldn't spend more than £350 on a laptop nowadays). If it doesn't fit I'll put it in as a 2nd drive into my Toshiba P300

and you can either use the backup utility or just copy the save to USB.
When i tried backing up my stuff before selling my 40gb, i realised some games would not allow me to back up (like demons souls). also when you transfer saves to another ps3, trophies will be disabled while using that save-game otherwise a lot of people would do that to cheat.

when i get my ps3 slim in a month or so, im just gonna start the games all over again.

btw if your playstation plus member (which you will be getting a free month of when PSN comes back) you can use the cloud save service....maybe that will work better but im not sure, ive not used it.

Just want to make sure though that this is ok to replace this one....

That had just died in my laptop so how would I go about replacing it? Is it as simple as just plugging it in or will I have to install windows again? And is there anyway to retrieve the things on my dead hard drive? Thanks
