Behind ever great man there lies a teacher, and this was certainly true of Bruce Lee, who claimed as his mentor a martial arts expert named Ip Man (1893-1972). A genius of Wushu (or the Chinese martial arts school), Ip Man grew up in a China nearly ripped to pieces by racial hatred, nationalistic strife and warfare. He rose like a phoenix above these ashes, however, courtesy of his participation in matches against various Wushu masters and kung-fun warriors - ultimately training martial arts icons such as Lee. This biopic from director Wilson Yip dramatizes Ip's life story.

I'm not sure about watching this movie, but it should set-up the background to the May 2010 release of the sequel, imaginatively-titled "Ip Man 2", due for release in Hong Kong in May 2010.

The second movie features the character of a young Bruce Lee before he became one of Man's students. A third movie is also planned.

#5

I thought it was Wing Chun he does and not Wu Shu?
Great movie

Ip man is a great movie!! you can watch it on youtube for FREE!! lol.

Red cliff is really good.

Also, Bang Rajan was suprisingly good, although as it was a straight to DVD, took 4 years for it to get released, whilst in the meantime Hero and Last samurai had been released, taking away its glory at this type of film.

Born invinsible is a classic ( although not as good) and fist of legend is another.

Ip man 2 should be good, bruce lee ( as a child) is apparntly apart of the story.

I watched 'Chocolate' recently. Fun film from the director of Ong Bak (Prachya Pinkaew) featuring a female lead.
Warrior king is also pretty good (Tony Jaa of Ong Bak)

Wing Chun is not Wu Shu, and yes he did Wing Chun :p

Wu Shu just means 'martial art' therefore Wing Chun is a Wu Shu just as Karate, Muay Thai and Boxing are.

Ip Man was a Wing Chun grandmaster, he had two sons Ip Chun and Ip Ching who are also both Wing Chun grandmasters. I have had the honour of being trained on a number of occasions under grandmaster Samuel Kwok who trained under both Ip Ching and Ip Chun and the Ip Man lineage is still being actively taught throughout the world.

Try "ong bak" and "ong bak 2" ... thought they were great .. no use of wires in the 1st one I believe. Also main actor does all his own stunts like Mr J Chan

wu shu is the general chinese communist state martial art. It is not wing chun! The same as Praying Mantis kungfu isn't Wing Chun. Wu Shu is generally what you see in Chinese martial art films ,more gymnastics than a fighting system!

You are thinking of Contemporary Wushu (also known as Sport Wushu and sometimes just Wushu), Wu Shu (note 2 words) just means martial art.

As for my avatar Pee Wee Herman kicks ass, apart from that whole being caught with his pants down in a porn theatre episode:-D
#26
No i think your thinking that i know what i'm talking about. wu shu as a system is what the chinese communist state teach and yes it does mean martial art but wing chun is wing chun ,wushu is wushu, its like saying all tea is pg tips! I suggest you get yourself down to your local leisure centre and actually do a bit of training instead of watching dvd's. i myself have been teaching karate for over 20 years and when i say karate i mean wado ryu can you see where this is heading? there are different styles in different styles martial of arts and to generalise everything and call it wu shu is laughable and ignorant! i suggest you stop chatting before you make yourself look anymore stupid than you already have! And please pee wee before you get your copy of MAI out , i know the history and lineage of my style of karate. to the guy who asked the orignal question of "i thought ip man taught wing chun not wu shu" yes he did mate

To be fair you never once gave me the impression you knew what you were talking about:-D

Whilst we're willy waving and being internet hardmen I'd like to point out that I have trained in Wing Chun for over 3 years in a club with direct lineage to Ip Man (Ip Man -> Ip Chun/Ching -> Samuel Kwok -> Steve Colton) but you're quite right I do also like watching kung fu DVDs.

I never said Wing Chun is Wu Shu, I said it is a Wu Shu (i.e. it is a martial art) - please take a look around any Chinese to English dictionary or Google if you still believe I am ignorant.

Wǔshù literally means "martial art". It is formed from the two words 武術: 武 (wǔ), meaning, "martial" or "military", and 術 (shù), which translates into "discipline", "skill" or "method."

So why advise to go to a leisure centre?

Either way, where is your academy?

(I have recently left a position as an instructor in [ITF] Taekwon-do & Kickboxing)

Well the scene where he fights 12 (guessed i cannot remember) of them for rice is full of ghosting which detracts from one of the best scene's in the film, spoilt by bad PQ in my oppinion, Would love the HK version as its far superior in PQ but thats locked to A :x

Please explain what you mean by this (Not a fan of the Angelic Upstarts are you by any chance ?). Dont no what you mean so i guess im not a fan :-D Its my last name well kinda

Edit just did a search on Angelic Upstarts and i no what you mean now lol well the lead singer has the same last name as mine :)

I recommend SPL (Sha Po Lang). Donnie Yen is also the lead in it. Check out the main fight scene in it on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZs48lJXhxM . Nobody does fighting cheoreography as good as the hong kong action guys.

Well done grandmaster flash you know how to copy and paste from wikipedia, full credit to you! And as for saying "I have trained in Wing Chun for over 3 years in a club with direct lineage to Ip Man (Ip Man -> Ip Chun/Ching -> Samuel Kwok -> Steve Colton)" I think everybody's heard that 3 times already! and to be honest that don't mean jack, i'm probally related to henry the eighth you to and most of the uk ,but guess what we ain't gonna be wearing a crown anytime soon! Systems get watered down ,changed and or improved depending on an individual instructor preference down the lineage(take Ip Man's best known student as an example) i don't remember him promoting much wing chun before he died! 3 years training ! Well done that probably puts you on a par with an amoeba in the evolutionary martial art scheme of things.I didn't realise i was speaking to such an esteemed member of the martial arts community.By the way the original question the guy asked was whether he taught wing chun or wu shu his wording suggested he meant as a system,i think you should have read it properly before you opened your chinese to english dictionary up (Is it in Mandarin or Cantonese i'm curious)!
