Would this work on an iphone 4?

Edit: Nevermind I can see that it does but without the mirroring.

Not the same factory - look at the symbol for USB on Apple products and the word 'USB' printed on this copy.
Different factory means different materials and quality control.
A lot of money for a copy, maybe if it were in Poundland I'd take a punt, but £23 - ridiculous!
Anyone who has used a cheap third party lead or adaptor for a Apple product will recognise that it is only worth the risk if it is a couple of quid!

apple's cables are terrible quality. I should know I have a couple that the wires are falling out all over the place. cheap chinese rubbish tbh.
cant comment on this product though as not got it.

£23.50 for a third party adapter or £35 for the real thing. Not much of a deal. It needs to be under £10 to be worth considering IMHO.

i'm getting more annoyed the more i think about this. why the f*** can't you plug an hdmi cable directly into the ipad2? apple know what mini-hdmi port is , they use them on their laptops. mini hdmi to hdmi cables are £3 delivered on ebay. i guess the kind of s**** you get if you buy apple products.

chaining adapters and cables means more to go wrong
read this to show this actually is already a problem!

Apple doesn't use mini HDMI, they use Mini displayport, which would possibly be too thick for the ipad.

Pretty much the best thing I have seen all day

Loved the iPad 1 video he did too

Agreed, only £10 less for something that probably doesn't work or wont in the near future.. Not such a good deal.

As for the haters at least Apple has a choice of adaptors including VGA, which is extremely useful for plugging into most workplace's projectors and such. So maybe more function than you'd think.

maybe if it had USB or mini-usb then it would be a bit more useful; other manufacturers have hdmi ; these are both pretty standard connectors...... so Apple could make a good product if they choose to instruct their 3rd pary manufacturers to do so but they choose not to - that's what's frustrating about them.....

I totally agree with the anti-Apple sentiments above. Apple really should stop making things so hard for customers. The iPad should have had a USB port and mini-HDMI all along. The USB could then be used for an adapter for SD and CF memory cards for camera use, if Apple can't also put SD and CF slots on it.

Apple can be one of the most infuriating companies around :(

I will be so glad if other tablet makers can produce something half decent that can compete effectively with iPads soon, to give Apple a wake up call. So far, the iPad 2 is (unfortunately) too far ahead of the competition.

do you have an ipad? if not, you have nothing to worry about

the vast majority of ipad owners won't use hdmi on it so it's pointless adding a feature with more cost etc that's not going to be used much. and if you've spent several hundred quid on an ipad, spending another few quid to increase functionality isn't much to ask. you would only use hdmi inside, and usually have the ipad lying down whilst using hdmi, so the increased "bulk" would be irrelevant. it's only an inch or so in size

Exactly uni, what's there to be infuriated about? Need HDMI get an adapter, what's the problem? I needed VGA and got it. Need USB? There's an adapter for it too.

Don't need those extras (like probably most people)? Don't get anything then, enjoy the savings in price and weight and less holes to gather dust.

I think people get too carried away bashing Apple.

Its just that hdmi/USB is standard on most modern devices so why can't apple include it? Surely Hdmi would be very useful for showing video taken on a camera/phone to a decent sized screen?

Its just an area that's sub-standard on the ipad2...

Yes there is, it's in the Camera Connection Kit, but works with a range of USB devices, not just cameras. I have a full audio/midi interface connected to it and using Garageband!

Most devices this size will only have mini HDMI, so you'd be carrying a dongle anyway. So just get Apple's dongle.

It may be somewhat more expensive, but it's also more useful than in other devices. Just look at how people are using it with the Sky Player to take their Sky Sports subscriptions to other TVs. It also does 1080p on the iPad2, whereas even the brand new Motorola Xoom only supports HDMI at 720p.

Personally I'm happy they let me have VGA, something no other tablet seems to care about, but an essential option to connect to projectors everywhere.

Can I plug in a memory stick, or any typical USB HDD I would use on a PC? No? Then, as far as I am concerned the answer is that there is not a USB port - or adapter.

Apple have deliberately crippled the iPad's functionality. The pity is that they can get away with it, because the competing tablets are simply not as good.

Well a tablet is not a PC in case you hadn't notice. If you want a PC buy one.
Why would you want to tie up a tablet with a big external HDD?

Btw memory sticks work, you can import videos and pictures from them.

Now let's look at your other logic with Android. Can I plug any USB gadget into Android?
Like this 3G dongle for example, it would be useful with the Wifi tablets. No, sorry, it can't.

So by your logic this means Google has crippled this functionality and Android doesn't have USB.

You've conceded the point I was making regarding the iPad's crippled functionality.

Regarding Android, as I said, those tablets are not as good as the iPad. So I fail to see your point.

My point is simply that whilst the iPad is the best tablet around, it could easily be much better if Apple pulled their finger out :)

anything could be better, but it's not crippled as it does what a tablet does. it's not a crippled tablet

my iphone doesn't let me plug in usb drives either, but that's not because it's a crippled phone, it's because phones aren't meant to have usb drives plugged into them, just like tablets aren't meant to either. they are portable devices. you don't want a big bloody thing sticking out of them

do you consider the ipad crippled because it doesn't come with a proper keyboard? can you imagine a keyboard twice the size of the ipad dragging along behind you when you are watching telly on the bus?

the thing is, you can get adapters and all all that crap to the ipad or iphone and make it work if you really want to, so they aren't even crippled in your misunderstood point of view, as you can do those things

surely you knew this when you bought your ipad? or if you don't have one, why are you moaning about it?
#26
No idea why you've gone off on a rant Uni?

What have phones got to do with tablets? Didn't Steve Jobs say that tablets (iPad) will take laptop/notebook sales and replace these devices for some users? That is why the issue is relevant for the iPad (and other tablets).

Whether I own an iPad or not is irrelevant. (I do.) The point is I am a potential customer for a more functional iPad 3.
#27
The genuine Apple HDMI adaptor doesn't feature a USB port, it has a throughport for power etc., which suggests that the iPad and iOS may not support USB, if iOS doesn't have USB drivers then forget any direct functionality with this dodgy clone lead!

you are the one ranting negative comments. i was just replying with some sense

you don't have the item in question and you aren't going to get one, so why bother posting to moan about it in the first place?

the phone was a comparison, as i was pointing out the features you mention are not what either of those items were intended for. so you could moan about it not making coffee, but it's not meant to make that either. the thing is, you can do the things you say, that you say it can't do

and the device in question works on both iphone and ipad

As I said on a previous post, there's USB functionality (as in you can plug in memory cards, microphones, MIDI adapters, speakers, keyboards and some more things) in the adaptor supplied on the Camera Connection Kit (there are also clones of it on Dealextreme), not in this HDMI adapter.

The USB in this adapter is for charging only.
