At first we didn't know what the common price was so we went around HMV, Dixon's, Curry's etc and they were all around 150 so this is great.

You can purchase over the phone. Just call and ask the price to be matched to that store. Delivery should be free.

no and yes, its the newest gen for 8gb but not the newest model for the larger sizes, which are 3rd gen, they have better performance, so can watch high res movies and play more 3D games i guess!
#14
Sorry, i thought 2g was the newest, must be the 3g then as it was the newest.

no 3rd gen is the latest, newer firmware and faster processor but not much in it unless you're a tech nerd like me. there is also a difference between the memory options available.

i'm sure someone will disagree but it really isn't a huge difference on the 8 GB model
#16
cant you pick this off amazon for under 100?
#17
Huh, I thought newest has Bluetooth and camcorder?
#18
Was this reduced for clearance or standard price? Do you have the 8 digit product code?

Thx

the 8gb 2nd gen and the 8gb 3rd gen are the same, but the 2nd gen has the older firmware on it, the upgrade for the newer firmware costs £5.99, it is only the firmware that is different, the 32gb and 64gb have headphones with mic and the they have the newer processor also i think battery life is slightly better and the graphics chip is better, i hope this clears things up

No, you're confusing with the iPhone.
#22
Slightly off topic, but how can you tell the difference between 2nd and 3rd gen?

Should make this a sticky as someone has to reel it off on every ipod touch deal! :)

No, you're confusing with the iPhone.

Just done some googling and diferences are as follows:

"Very simple, the 8GB iPod touch is still the 2G model, the 32GB and 64GB is the all-new iPod touch 3G.

For the 3rd-generation iPod touch, it takes the hardware of the iPhone 3GS, A8 Cortex processor 833MHz underclocked to 600MHz with PowerVR SGX GPU and 256MB of RAM. All these equates to similar performance as the new iPhone 3GS and that means it's blazingly fast."

You can have a 8gb 3rd gen ipod touch, which is why places are selling ipod touch 8gb 2nd gen and 3rd gen see argos for example, but i think it is just the firmware thats been updated

No you cant. The "3rd Gen" 8gb doesnt exist....

as per above....

...the 3rd Gen are only available in 32 &64GB models. They include a faster processor, and the new software. You can load the new software onto the older models, however they still have the older processor, therefore do not run as fast.

They are even listed separately on the apple site!!!

Anyone know where I can get a good deal on a 3rd gen 32gb ipod touch? I tried the asda offer but they were selling them more than the other stores which were £135 and had a £15 itunes voucher and a speaker dock, seems that asda toryglen in glasgow dont match the price of the other asda stores and didnt even have any in stock though the offer ends tonight so they'll probably get stock in at 12.01 am :(

This is a good deal. the Touch is excellent. My daughter got s refurb from apple (for £4 more !) and it does much more then you'd think. Lots of games, BBC iplayer and the usual ipod music, audio books etc. The only thing it hasn't got is a camera but you can get one of those very cheaply and you can put the photographs on the touch if you wanted to show anyone.

not true, this only applies to the 16gb and 32gb versions, the 8gb didn't get a faster graphics processor, it is IDENTICAL to the 2nd gen unfortunately :(

It is not identical and can I ask if the 3rd gen 8gb doesn't exist why does it exist on sites such as argos, amazon etc...???
I know the apple store lists them separately but this is because the only thing different on a 2nd gen 8gb ipod touch and a 3rd gen is the firmware, the 32gb & 64gb have a faster processer etc... so yes there isn't really any difference between a 2nd gen 8gb and a 3rd gen 8gb apart from the 3rd gen comes with the new firmware and if you buy the 2ng gen one you need to upgrade it
Hope this helps
Oh and hot deal its a fantastic price! May as well buy this and pay to upgrade it

Whilst I hate Apple with a passion, my daughter is desperate for one of these.

But what's the betting that I ring John Lewis in Nottingham and Leicester tomorrow to hear them saying they know nothing about this and the price is £149? If I'm wrong fair enough but these mega deals never seem to materialise for real.

There is a difference on the latest 8gb iPod touch, the one that Apple themselves refer to as third gen, and it has to do with the firmware (not the software which is easily upgraded for £2.99). I have had three of these models and the latest one (my sons '3rd gen') can only be jailbroken tethered, to allow you to put non-apple apps on it. This tethering means that it needs to be hooked back up to your computer if the battery is dead or is turned off (both v. likely). So in conclusion, if you want to jailbreak, the non 3rd gen' is your best bet, and if you are not bothered about this, you will never spot the difference. I would liken the 8gb current touch to the 3G iPhone and both the bigger models (32 & 64) to the 3GS iphone, in terms of processor speed. All three have almost the exact same functionality and features (except speed!).
Hope this helps someone!

I wonder whether the salesperson confused the Nano with the Touch?

Nano selling for £115 on their website
