All 8 GB are 1st or 2nd Gen only, no 3rd Gen 8GB, but still good price :-)

Hi, some advice please. My 9 year old son wants some form of multi media device for his birthday, wants to download/rip his DVDs and Music onto a storage device for portability... is this the ideal thing or is it maybe overkill....?
Thx

The 8gb version is basically a repacked 2nd gen. The 32/64gb 3rd gen has a 50% faster processor the 8gb does not.

According to the apple list of features - the 8gb 3g is the same as the 2G
3rd gen iPods Touch are only the new 32GB and 64GB ones. They have a faster processor (600Mhz vs 533Mhz 2g), double the RAM memory, better and faster graphics

As said before this is 3g but people are saying not much difference just software upgrade ?
Got one before xmas for £149 with £15 itunes and charger, case, usb, etc etc so only a good price if your not going to buy the extra stuff anyway.

iTouch is good but he could achieve this with a newer 5th gen iPod Nano which is cheaper (8gb = £99 if you shop around - I bought from Argos pre Xmas for £99 and a free £15 iTunes card) and which includes a video cam feature, which the kids love.

the difference between a 2g and a 3g is the firmware, if you buy a 2nd gen when you upgrade the firmware it costs £5.99, if you have a 3g then the firware is already upgraded therefor no £5.99 charge, the 8gb has the same processor, the 32gb and 64 gb have a faster processor, also the graphics chip is better(i think) the battery is also meant to last longer because of the way the processor works, also they come with headset with the mic on it, hope this is correct and clears some points up :-D

8GB is simply a firmware updated 2nd Gen iPod Touch (@lfc18101970), who ever states they have a 3rd Gen 8GB iPod touch simply dont its just a firmware and inferior hardware wise to the 32GB and 64GB

The 8GB Doesnt come with mic headset.

8GB includes:

Earphones, Dock Connector to USB Cable

32 & 64GB Includes:

Earphones with Remote and Mic, Dock Connector to USB Cable.

I bought a 2g 32gb only a couple weeks back. Upgraded firmware to get Bluetooth. Firmware upgrade is free

No there isnt, you may think you have 3rd gen and you may have been told by store its 3rd gen but the only 3rd gen ipods are 32gb or 64gb, go on Apple website you will see yourself. If you put an 8gb next to a 32/64gb you will see the processor speed is almost twice as fast on the "real" 3rd gen models. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, most think the same as you but youre wrong!

Does the Nano have video playback function for watching movies? Even if it does, I'd be inclined to go for something with a bigger screen; such as the Archos players.

Google still works doesn't it? .... and Apple have a website that advertises all of their kit so you can see what it does .... doesn' it?
