Hello

It went unadvertised in yesterdays Apple event, but the cost of upgrading from OS 2.x to the latest OS 3.1 (for your iPod Touch) has now been reduced to just 2.99 pounds.

Please do not vote cold just because you think this should have been a free upgrade in the first place!

To upgrade to the latest OS 3.1 you will need to connect your iPod Touch to itunes and you will be prompted to upgrade when you click on the device and then click "check for updates".

I think the upgrade from 2.x to 3.1 is well worth the upgrade, especailly at the now reduced price. For the full list of new features with the upgrade from 2.x to 3.1 check here - http://www.apple.com/uk/iphone/softwareupdate/

Thanks!

PS: Here is a link showing the new price (in print), but obviously iTunes will also show the same price when you update -

And what if your iPod touch is V1.0?

I am not really sure, although I do know that 1.0 to 2.0 costed 10 dollars/6 pounds at the time.

Would it be possible for someone to try upgrading from 1.0 to 3.1 and posting here the cost that iTunes will show (you should still have the option to not upgrade after seeing the cost, so this is only to find out how much. it should help people like the poster above). I am unable to do this myself as I do not have a iDevice with OS 1.0 on it.

am i right in thinkin if i upgrade my ipod touch 2nd get it will work ie threw xbox when pluged in or threw usb car stereo
#3
Thanks guys, yes, I think the update has always been free for iPhone users. I will edit my original post to only show "iPod touch" and not the iPhone. Although then, should the iPhone free upgrade go separately in the freebies section?

I suggest you read the title again it says Iphone/Touch :whistling:

Sorry, I fixed this now per my post above. It should only show iPod touch now.

Why the hot votes? This should have been free to start with, even at £2,99 it's a total rip-off. I refused to pay for it and found it for free online.

I do not see why it should have been "free to start with". OS 3.0 added A LOT of new features. You never upgrade a Windows or Mac OS for free (well unless you are pirating) so why should a mobile OS be any different?

That debate aside, and as I said, please vote only on the basis of this being reduced by 50% now, and not because of your personal opinions on an upgrade's cost.

Thanks!

thankyou for posting this i will be upgrading my touch now at the new lower price..
#11
It should be FREE, so cold.

Charging this ONLY for iPod Touch is just plain senseless and greedy.
#12
Its a pretty good price if you are upgrading from less than v3. if you just upgraded to v3 then its a free update to v3.1.

But I paid £5.99 not that long ago to upgrade to 3.0....and if I waited then I could have upgraded to 3.1 for half that price.

Shafted by Apple yet again.

Yeah, I get shafted by various retailers on a regular basis because when I buy something, it often comes down in price at some point in the future

On the upside, whenever I buy petrol, I feel happy because the price tends to go up - being an early adopter really pays off with fuel :whistling:

LOL normally I would agree with you, but Apples prices very rarely come down in comparison to other retailers that we'd buy from.

Sorry, people will vote on whether they think this is a deal or not - not based upon your criteria.

To my mind it is NOT a deal. It's a firmware upgrade and regardless of the new 'features' that's all it is. My Sony Phone had a new firmware recently that included a load of really cool new features, see if you can guess how much it was? £10? £20? £2.99? None of the above... it was FREE!!! I guess the difference is that Sony doesn't attract Fanbois who are willing to pay repeatedly for the same product :-D

Keep paying the Apple tax and smile whilst you do so! :w00t:

I think the "deal" here is that the cost of something has gone down by 50%. People who would have purchased this regardless of the price are saving some money, thats what should be voted on, no? :)
#17
Half of nothing is nothing.

Since Apple is not correctly pricing its "update", anything more than nothing is not a deal.

The fact that it shows bias on one product over another (iPhone vs iPod Touch) is an added bonus.
#18
is it me or is it free to update the ipod, if you know where to look. or well google?
#19
Your correct golemsmate. Its free and simple using itunes.
However, its shady.
People have a point about its not that wrong for apple to charge for additional features. However, if they do this, they should make an alternative free firmware which addresses bug fixes.... which they dont.
Paying for updated features is one thing... but having to pay apple to fix bugs they built into your ipod is a little cheeky :)

Some of you need to educate yourselfs why Apple have to charge for the update, its not their fault!!

Do a google for the Sarbanes-Oxley Act
#22
I can't think of another mp3 player/ mp4 player that charges for an update. Archos 605/705 charges for plugins and they are rip offs. I would say just update for free or jailbreak your ipod.
#23
Will this upgrade make me lose the software in my Touch?

Actually that acts covers more the unlocked use of hardware more than software. In addition apple would only have to charge you £0.01 to comply with this act, they want the money.

Haha. I suggest you read it. Apple very dubiously used it to justify charging for wireless-n availability for their laptops. basically, the wireless-n hardware was in the laptops but they weren't allowed to charge for it at POS.

However, this is a software update and therefore does not fall foul of any of the same rules.

edit:

Otherwise console makers will have the same problem every single time they update the software. Same thing for service packs on operating systems.

I have a feeling charging £0.01 would end them up in court :)

Jesus Christ. Bad enough that you actually spelt 'through' as 'threw' in the first place, but you have been corrected, at least try to learn from the experience.

I wouldn't really advise anyone to do it for free, it's a pain in the ass. Normally I have no problems with hacked software and am pretty switched on about what to do but I have failed and failed again to upgrade to 3.0. If it fails it ******s your ipod and you have to do a system restore which takes bloody ages. Not to mention, if you have long since deleted your music or whatever off your computer, you lose it.

So for me, this is hot. I will happily pay the 2.99 now.

Why does this not affect other companies then. I don't pay when my phone is updated with new features, I don't pay when my PS3 gets new features. I could go on...

Please explain why exactly this act forces Apple to charge for it's iTouch updates

Well I'm not just making stuff up!!!! lol.
I had lots of problems doing it and from searching for answers to these problems it was clear that many other people had the same problem.

What I said about losing stuff was if you had music on your ipod that you no longer have on your computer you lose it. Not everyone stores all of their music in their itunes library.

If you back it up, it just restores it back to your settings and what apps you have on it. It wipes all of your music, podcasts and such.

The REAL reason is because Apple agree to update the iPhone as part of its contract with the phone companies (the % cut of your phone bill Apple takes with this contract with the mobile companies is part of Apples agreement to update the iPhone for free).

If they upgrade iPod Touches for free, the phone companies (who are in reality losing money on every iPhone sold) will attempt to claw money back from Apple.

Do people disagree to software companies charging for major releases of their software? That those very updates include security fixes? No, but this is Apple so let's continue whinging until Steve Jobs' new liver rejects him.

Are these the same people that complain about paid apps/programs/games, with every other comment laced with "DIS APP SHUD B FREEEE SIGN MY PETITIONN TO BAN DESE PPL FROM CHARGIN BABY P WIV DA ANGLES NAO"?

Do we complain about paying £40 a year for the same sodding football game, the only difference being Wayne Rooney looks a bit more uglier each year? No.

Pay up, or shut up. No one cares if you won't be able to buy a pint tonight.
#37
Ok this maybe a stupid question but what does this upgrade do to your ipod touch? I've got the very first ipod touch and have never updated it. Would it be worth me doing this?
Cheers

Not really it's whether or not it's a hot deal (as in hotukdeals), being charged less for something that people think should have been free in the 1st place is not a hot deal, people will vote accordingly and it isn't the OP's place to specify criteria for people voting hot or cold.

Companies charging for firmware updates isn't a trend that should be encouraged. If apple want to sell the new apps seperately that's fine but adding features like 'cut n paste' and the ability to pay Apple more money to download videos via wifi shouldn't really be paid for. How long before you have to buy an ipod then pay a monthly subscription just to use it?

Isn't that the iPhone?

Besides, Apple could have just stopped updating iPod Touches after each new release, and we wouldn't be having this internet banter.

Awesome. Not upgraded yet because im being careful with money (ie tight). Great news, many thanks :)
