does it need to be connected by Bluetooth to be able to track online.

Not much info on the website about how it works.
Mentions Bluetooth a lot but also: GPS Location and Retrieval (Must be connected to a mobile network) ?
Want these for our cats but want them working on mobile data instead of Bluetooth and don't want to be pinned down to the manufacturers subscriptions...

These will connect to your phone using low power bluetooth 4, and when they go out of range the phone app logs the phone's current location, so you can check where you were when it went out of range after you lost the item it was attached to. In addition the tag and app will bleep. On a cat it would only really tell you that they are not nearby, not convinced that they are that useful for finding lost keys either.

Ziggy, have you looked into this gizmo for your cats: http://www.podtrackers.com ?
I found it useful, but a bit of a faff changing the battery every few days; if your cats don't stroll away too far, a much better option IMHO is the loc8tor: works by radio frequency, over about 200 feet, batteries last months, no subscription required, just the initial purchase.

You're welcome,

Just noticed a tiny GPS tracker that might be more practical for tracking a cat, although it doesn't look waterproof so probably would need a small container to keep rain out :- http://www.banggood.com/Pets-Cats-Dogs-Mini-GPS-Tracker-Children-Vehicle-Locator-Thief-Proof-Tool-Personal-SOS-Alarm-p-1085021.html?rmmds=detail-bottom-relatedproducts
