We have just had a trip there last week, was staying in newquay all week for our hols....Two adults and four children came in a £80 return day trip to St Marys from Penzance....Was well worth it was like a mini criuse, newly refurbed ship plenty of indoor and outdoor seating isle of Scilly are amazing, I would say though you only have a couple of hours on the island so boat trips to other islands (st martins etc) our not really possible but plenty to see and loverly beaches at St Marys anyway so no need (unless you want a private beach!!) What made the trip tho was on the way back Dolphins where swimming beside the ship oO Was amazing diddn't expect it was the best thing this side of a passport, Aparently it's very common, Awsome day!!!...Heat!!
The £30 is valid for return day trips only. The standard rate is £35 one way but they also have a 50% discount for travel on sunday (not including the special day trip fare). Not sure if this has to be pre-booked 24hrs prior though.

The worst crossing I ever had was Poole to Cherbourg on that Condor Ferries catamaran. The sea was as calm as anything but I've never felt so sea sick. Must've been the type of boat. It felt especially bad going past the Channel islands.

You don't go past the channel islands when going to Cherbourg? They are further on down and west. On a side not a catamaran seems to produce a different sort of rocking motion as it skips over the sea to a normal ship. I much prefer them but I know people who aren't normally sea sick get ill on them.
