:roll::x come to daddy :friends:

I looking for whiskey advice. I've recently started drinking it instead of beer and I really liked Jack Daniels. Is there any others with similar taste (smooth and not too dry)? Are there any sweet whiskeys? Or is sweet and whiskey an oxymoron due to the length of fermentation?

Good deal btw. Also JD is £16 in Sainsburys for 70cl.

is this cheaper in Costco?

Bullit is nice and the aforementioned Buffalo Trace

Have you informed your current girlfriend and her mother that Uncle JD is visiting tonight? Might be an idea... ;-)

Personally I can't stand the stuff - awful tasting single-filtered firewater. Give me a glass of Jamesons any day...

Same Jamesons for me too :)

Two you might find even smoother on the palate are Jim Beam Black label, and (especially) Maker's Mark. MM comes with a distinctive red wax seal round the top, and has a real smoothness to it - almost vanilla-y in taste. They're both about a quid more expensive than Jack for a 70cl bottle, but almost never on offer ... but you'll be more incluned to have them neat or on ice (rather than with Coke), so they'll last longer. I'm certain I've seen one or both of these in Tesco and Sainsbury's, and I think Asda do Jim Beam Black.

Bulleit is - as the chap above suggested - a pretty fine drop, though maybe not *quite* so smooth as Maker's Mark.

Cheers! *hic*

Makers Mark is far nicer than JD

Try Makers Mark its one of the best Bourbon Whiskeys I have ever tasted. If you like Jack Daniels you will like most types of Bourbon Whiskey (Even though Jack Daniels isn't officially a bourbon whiskey as it isnt made in the right area).
#14
Good deal, but I stopped drinking this when I realised it was neither big, clever or indeed 'rock n roll'

Give me a single malt from a remote Scottish island any day...
#15
malt whiskey tastes completely different to bourbon in my humble opinion - i actually hate the taste of whiskey but love a bit of bourbon.

this might sound like heresy but Lidle's do they own label stuff which is very nice for around £11 a bottle. the other supermarkets do their own version labels but Lidls one is much nicer - in fact it tastes identical to Jim Beam
#16
Jack Daniels is a drink for young school girls. ;)
Wild Turkey (101') is the real mean hairy-chested bast drink. :O

Careful tho, both can give nasty 2 day hang-overs.

i've found Waitrose's own Bourbon to be better than Lidl, and onyl £1 more.

Cheers OP

ooooh might try that then.

To OP...good price, rubbish drink. I'm sure JD is all about the label and image, can't be about the taste.

Love the stuff but already got a couple of bottles. Heat added
#20
Good find!

Shame i just bought a 700ml bottle last night for £18.99

Heat added!
#21
Gonna have to treat myself to one of them, TY OP.
#22
I work with whisky so know a thing or 2 about the stuff...

As a bourbon Jack is ok, as someone mentioned, only single filtered though, but Jack do make a double filtered Jack called Gentleman Jack. The only real competitor to Makers Mark which is as close to a malt in terms of Kentucky.

Jim Beam/Canadian Club and all the other pretenders are just a poor mans MM or Jack in terms of quality and how it's made, but in terms of personal preference most people can't tell quality so just drink it because they like it, which is no bad thing.

But yeah, good deal! I'd get it but MM is daddy and my work own it so I get it cheapy cheap! :)

No its not,not in milton keynes anyway

The reason Jack Daniels tastes sweet and smooth is because its filtered through sugar maple aka syrup. Its not a Whisky or a Bourbon its a Tennessee Whiskey. What the Americans have that is closest to proper whisky is Scotch. Malts and blends are real Whisky. They added the 'e' to Whisky because you cant call it a Whisky unless its made in Scotland so i heard.

Jack and coke as per usual, i dont like it straight its too sweet. Its usually kinda expensive so i drink it when its on offer or at Christmas when its almost always on offer, so this is a sweet dealio.

I like Grouse, half pint and a half like the old guys get in my local lol. The best whisky in my local is Jonny Walker Black Label not much selection tbh but buying bottles can get expensive so i drink Gin or Rum or something and save the Whisky. Although its not like Grouse or similar is that expensive.

Sorry for the rant. Voted Hot! Rep added!

This is a great deal for JD as it gets more and more expensive to buy, even better with the other halfs 10% staff discount!
#28
For anyone who just wants to see if they like the taste Sainsbury's have 200ml Trial Size of JD for £5.00.
#29
The only use this stuff is for making Jack Daniels Glaze, and perhaps in a cocktail, mixing it with amoretto, coke and some lime. Otherwise, it is pretty vile...
#30
Personally I prefer Jim Beam, and it is at least a real Bourbon.
I don't keep track that closely, but I thought this deal was roughly the price JD always is in Morrison's.

I think its about £22 in costco last time I looked. Before christmas they has 70cl 2 for £22 at Tesco, not seen any better than that.
#32
Nothing beats Woodford Reserve, quite simply amazing. Bit pricey and I have only seen it in Waitrose, does any other supermarket sell it?

Also is £20 average for a bottle of Markers Mark as I saw in a corner shop a few weeks ago and really have been meaning to try it.

hmm in my opinion ALDI bourbon is much better than Lidl's.
in fact any spirit from ALDI is value for money and makes the branded spirit company run for their money.

examples-

Aldi London dry gin - beats Gordon's any time

Aldi Triple distilled vodka - neutral taste with fiery finish makes you forget Smirnoff and the price same as that of tesco value vodka ( Tesco value vodka is not even triple distilled)

Aldi brandy - try yourself and you won't repent.

Aldi pure malt scotch - very smooth rounded taste with floral aroma with the hint of honey, rose bit spicy note Hummm- you only pay £10.99 for it. worth every penny.

if you are not a branded snob try the Aldi spirits .
happy drinking..

Cool thanks. When I'm done with my bottle of JD I'll try Maker's Mark neat.

I've heard many good things about JW Black Label so I must treat myself to that one day

jim beam black label is the only jim beam worth drinking - white label is utter pants and isn't fit to clean the toilet!!!!
#36
Took a chance that the local Tesco would have some in stock, during the last offer of £22 (70cl) for 2 they ran out of JD quickly. Well they had loads left this time, bought two bottles, used a Tesco £6 off for £40 spend voucher and in the end paid only £34.

That's £34 for two 1 litre bottles of JD, now that's a bargain, I thought it was a steal and felt almost guilty, I kept expecting them to stop me leaving the store. :p
#37
n.b. for the same price at my tesco (tiverton, devon) is "Gentleman jack- a better version of jd , by jack daniels.£20 !!! it is a fantastic offer ... i have seen it for over £30 previously
would post reciept but have sloooooow internet... but a great deal!!!!!!!

Picked up a bottle of JD today!! NO GJ on the shelf. But then I got home and saw the Sainsburies deal :(
