Fast growing - 2ft a year in good conditions - beat the retailers at their own game. All you need is a patch of earth or you could do 'wild' gardening - ie plant them on some public land then come cut…

even leylandii conifer dont grow 2m a year

How quick do Leylandii grow?
Under good conditions the different types of Leylandii will grow the following amounts:
Green Leylandii - up to 3ft (90cm) a year.
Leylandii 2001 - up to 3ft (90cm) a year.
Leylandii Castlewellan Gold –up to 2ft 6in (75cm) a year
Leylandii Gold Rider – up to 1ft 6 (45cm) a year

grows 18-24 inches per year according to this site - where you can buy seeds :)http://www.treeseedonline.com/store/p63/Nordmann_Fir_(abies_nordmaniana).html

We used to have a conifer we dug up each year then replanted after Christmas. That retarded the growth so it lasted several years before getting too tall. Had two originally but one didnt survive replanting the second or third time. You need to water them if you do this.

Bareroot is something of a lottery , maybe its better with these trees but we bought a batch of laurel hedging from Jacksons bare root and only one plant survived , £100 down the drain , ball root would have been a safer bet but more pricey

You have to look after them properly, I'm surprised that your death rate was so high. Did you keep them well watered etc?

As I said earlier, mine were all 100% healthy and if they die it will be down to me & my handling of them.

But I got them in the ground pronto and they look fine.

Yes , kept the roots wet then planted then pronto the naxt day , used bonemeal etc and fertilizer but they all died apart from one plant , disappointing

You would have to have watered them etc for 12 months (if dry weather) not just once. Probably the only thing that is likely to kill them (if you got them in the ground promptly) is lack of water over the next year or so.

interesting!!! do they need watering if we get a hot summer?

DEFINITELY!

First year is a tricky year so keep them watered and they'll do fine.
