Might not be brand new though

Not one scenario in "ironic" is ironic.

Horrible, screeching vocals - check

Pretentious, cliche-ridden lyrics - check

Emotionally immature songs about relationships - check

Faux-alternative mainstream artist - check

Aimed at, and could have been written by, any high school girl - check

No idea what irony is - check

That would be Jagged Little Pill, then.

A song titled "sod's law" probably wouldn't have been as catchy though. It would also have meant Ed Byrne's only joke in his stand-up routine circa year 2000 would have been comparing his look's to those of Darlene from Roseanne.

OK. It's 2010 now. So can everybody please STOP pointing out that the track Ironic isn't ironic in any sense whatsoever. You told us 15 years ago.

She has helped inspire a generation of it all though. They clearly saw there was a market for angst pop rock by chick singers that cannot put together their own bands to create their own songs so muster the help of song writers that inject the right formula for radio play.

Cue Pink, Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry and the former Disney pop protégé Hannah Montana who is all "grown up" and wants to "rock out" instead of "cod country rock out" in her fathers footsteps as Miley Cyrus.

All these are ironic as far as I am concerned?

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well isn't this nice..."
And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

A traffic jam when you're already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic...don't you think
A little too ironic...and, yeah, I really do think...

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out
Helping you out

Hope you are being sarcastic (but not ironic). How is rain on a wedding day ironic? Even if your name is Rain McRainson from the planet Rainzor X it wouldn't be ironic if it rained on your wedding day. Irony can't really be conveyed in these rhyming short sentences. Alanis needs to flesh each situation out. "Isn't it unfortunate" would have been a much more accurate title. The worst thing about it is that she even asks "....don't you think?". Bloody using loaded questions as well the cheeky bint.

To be fair, I think that this song has raised the profile of actual irony in modern culture more than any other work of the 90's. The very act of being so openly, completely wrong about irony, has led to a near universal understanding of the term.

That's got to be a good thing and, as a little bonus, that's represents real irony in action.

It's a beautiful thing.

Yes but it is a double edged sword. For every person that has their awareness of irony raised, there are dozens of proles that abuse the word and throw it into any events arising from their asinine lives. "Missed the bus again....how ironic"....no, no that is not ironic.

If you were relying on the said bus to get you to Stagecoach Buses HQ to deliver a speech about the importance of Timekeeping & Punctuality, it could perhaps be considered somewhat ironic, yes? But that seems a bit wordy for a throwaway pop tune.

Haha yes then maybe it would qualify.
