Thought this was a good deal considering it's a new release and critically acclaimed.
First deal posted ;)
Received news of deal in an email, hooray.
EDIT: have discovered that PLAY are running a similar deal, but as far as I know that only comes with the blu-ray. This also comes with the standard DVD format version. So providing it's in a separate case (doubt it though!) you could sell it on.

From HMV:
AVATAR is the story of ex-Marine Jake, a paraplegic war veteran, who finds himself thrust into hostilities on a distant planet filled with exotic life forms, Pandora. As an Avatar, a human consciousness in an alien body, he finds himself torn between two worlds in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture

Play's deal is the same;
"James Cameron's Avatar: Combi Pack (Blu-ray & DVD) (2009)"

Just comes down to your choice of retailer, or whether you want to wait and see if anyone else is doing it cheaper I guess...

Do we know if the 3D version will be released or is it included on this disc?

James Cameron let slip that a 3D Special Edition version is due around November this year when 3D TV's will be in the shops.
Will be Blu-Ray only, PS3's will be getting the 3D firmware update this summer, so just need a new TV to enjoy.
#4
Personally I thought the 3D effects were a bit crap and over the top for Avatar. I enjoyed the 2D version so much more. Thanks for letting me know about this though, definitely preordering the bluray. :)

Just to add to this. The 3D Blu-ray will still play on a 2D TV using a 2D Blu-ray player but obviously just in 2D.

That's my main reason for waiting.

I just looked at play, and they are showing the combi blu-ray and DVD for £14.99, also the pre-order that i placed yesterday (which i was going to cancel) now says that it is the combi pack of blu-ray and DVD. So this is the same price / deal at play.com too (probably at amazon as well) and i think Tesco, so a choice of maybe 4 retailers all doing the same deal, just personal preference now.
#7
Same price at Amazon now. Perhaps the supermarkets will under cut these prices on the day of release?
#8
dont forget quidco!

Isn't the £5 off code only for when you spend £50 over over?

I can't quite grasp the concept of a combi pack, if you've got a Blu-ray player why would you want a DVD as well? Yeh you could give it away or use it as a coaster.
#13
Voted COLD

Far too many other retailers doing the same deal for it to be HOT

The DVD version is a great added bonus for playing on the PC (if no BluRay) or for converting to ipod.

I sort of agree but then you are getting a blockbuster movie in a combi pack for only £15 - the quicdo.
It's certainely good value, but like you say is that the same as a hot offer?

If you put two TVs side-by-side, watch the DVD on the left one, and put the TV's "red" contrast at high, play the Blu-Ray on the righthand TV, and put the "blue" contrast on high, then you can slip on some 3d glasses, and watch Avatar in 3D.

I... errm... don't get out much.
#17
No extras or interactive menus on these discs. Apparently a barebones offering until a later edition.

Certainly not worth £14.99 if they're not going to put the effort in.

So how many times do I want to watch the same film, especially at a lower quality? If I can't wait till I get home & can put it in the Blu-ray I think I need help!

Not everyone has a Blu-Ray player in every room yet. The general idea is that most families will have 1 blu-ray player and HD tv setup. A lot of kids have standard dvd players in their rooms (or the little tv's with dvd built in). So this makes great sense to watch it all together and then let the little ones watch it over and over again (like they do) in their rooms.

It's also good for other people too, such as those with portable DVD players to watch on planes etc.

The idea is that those who do not yet have a blu-ray player but are intending to get one can still buy the film to play on DVD but don't have to pay twice to get the same film later when they have upgraded. Some movies are sent with the DVD on one side of the disc, and the blue ray version on the opposite so that you can't make money by selling one or play it in two separate places.

you can still use it if you use the pre-order trick. add it to the basket with gt5 (pre-order) and add the code. it will knock £5 off the blu ray. once you receive the blu ray cancel the pre-order. done

Hot from me, not seen it yet but I reckon it will be visually stunning on blu-ray! I seem to get a 10% discount on my basket with everything I buy from HMV so you cant really grumble with £13.50 for a spanking new film!
#26
Such a disappointing film in my opinion.

When they started to do combi packs I went straight out and bought another TV exactly the same as my current one. Then when someone comes round my house and says an upscaled DVD is just as good as blu ray, I can enlighten them with a side by side demonstration. Oh how foolish they must feel.

I do this. I really do.

£14.99 at several retailers, cold.

Also worth a mention is that you can buy the Sony BDP-360 Blu-Ray player, with a copy of the Avatar Steel box set, for an impressive £119.99 from Play.

No extras, the 2 disc blu-ray is 1 blu-ray, 1 DVD. There is another edition already planned for release in November. Stone cold.

And I'm a fan of this film.
