One particularly for all you 30 somethings,

Sadly more remembered for their major "baggy era" hit "Sit Down" and the vast array of t shirt prints (if remembered correctly both James and Neds Atomic Dustbin were guilty of having the most t shirt merchandise) its easy to forget the numerous classic slices of alternative pop rock they put out.

So for those of us getting too old complaining about the state of output on radio one and having to buy DAB Radios in order to listen to "decent" music on Radio 6, we can reminisce about the good old days when it was still possible for a true alternative rock band to dent the charts.

So in these official times of "recession", with a mortgage to pay, a cheap deal like these is all the more welcome, for when you have the time to relax outside of work, and battling with bringing up kids and spend time to yourself to remember the halcyon days of youth, University, and when you had no cares, dancing around like some mad lunatic at the student union bars to the likes of "Born Of Frustration" and "Laid".

*EDIT* Price now gone up to £3.99 each, will leave this here as a heads up, but feel free to expire.

lol :-D They had better "hits" than "Sit Down" During their time, some classic stuff on these, Seven was a brilliant album, "Born Of Frustration", "Seven" and "Sound" were great tunes...and still made a dent in the top 40 back in the day!

Then there is "Laid"...classic tune! "She's A Star", "Tomorrow"...they had more hits than people seem to remember

voted hot for the write up cico (and a crackin' reference to the cocteau twins) and taking me back to my youth :) coming from brum it was hard to escape the neds t-shirt phemonena. i had my own version of sit down that i used to chant whenever it was being played --- just replace the words "sit down" with an expletive that starts with "f... o.."

Another west midlander  and one noticing the cocteaus reference too! Couldnt escape Neds, PWEI, Stuffies or James t shirts in S'Bridge back in '91!

Forgot to put in my blurb actually, that they have certainly come back more than revigoured after their few years hiatus, havent seen them live but "Hey Ma" is a cracking album, and a fantastic return to form.
#13
check out, or already know about James and Eno.
Awesome.

If I could also be so bold, I am currently listening to a band called Archie Bronson Outfit, The song being... "dart for my sweetheart"
check this tune out if you believe you love music. Also turn it up! :p

Just have, heard their name before now, but not anything by them, liked it actually, good riff groove, like the vocal urgency and quirkiness...thanks for that :)

30 soemthings? I'm only in my 20's! Never mind sit down (personally I think it's overrated) James had some much better tunes, like Out To Get You, Tomorrow, etc. First time I saw them live was T in The Park, couldn't believe how good they were. Brilliant deal, heat added

Not saying that there are fans that are less than 30!...just referring to the demographic of any 80s bands these days, there is going to be a higher percentage of people over 30, it fit in with my write up blurb too :)

Thanks for the heat, nice to see James fans on this forum whatever the age!

Tomorrow is an excellent single, also really think the song "Seven" is amazing too, as is the whole album for that matter.

I wouldn't have guessed you were a James fan mate.

But a great find. A great Manchester band (and somewhat underrated imo). I think the masses just remember "Sit Down"; which is a shame 'cos there are about 100 better James tracks than that. And "Sit Down" is a great track.

What surprises you there about me liking James?! Lol.

To be honest, I have always liked James without being what I would class a major fan, but yeah, I think though like you say they are somewhat underrated mainly due to the fact it took some song reworkings during the baggy era to break the band mainstream, then when that became unfashionable peoples interest waned away.....but they certainly have had some corking alt-pop hits over the years for sure.

To me the most underrated Manchester band though were definiteley The Chameleons, and its a tough call between Joy Division/New Order and The Chameleons for me as my favourite Manc band.

You just making the world a smaller place, so the pubs The Swan, The Mitre, The Royal Exchange etc etc all bring memories flooding back to you eh?! The amount of times Clint Mansell used to be in The Swan on weekends.

Ooh massive James fan here, don't forget Tim Booth is actually from Yorkshire really. Brilliant albumns at a brilliant price, actually Sit Down was the only song they made which I actually didn't like. Laid and Seven were fantastic albumns and are in my top 10 faves from the 90s. Gold Mother was a great albumn too. Did anyone see them live at Blackpool summer 1990? fantastic gig
#24
Seven is in my top 5 albums of the 90's amazing live

Thanks OP, Was looking for my copy of Whiplash just the other day.

James are still absolutely superb live in case anyone was wondering.
#26
Was it James that did a track called Johnny Yen about an old bloke who kept setting himself on fire?! I've got it going round in my head and it certainly sounds like them.

Must have a look on itunes when I get home...
#27
I saw them at T in the park too, they were fantastic! I agree that Sit Down is sooo overrated, they had some much better songs, anyway I`m away to buy `Hey Ma`, didnt know they had it out. Cheers!

Yes it was, just as you said it was called Johnny Yen.

Have the lyrics to the start of the song to go with that tune :)

Ladies and gentlemen, heres my disease
Give me a standing ovation and your sympathy
Poor old johnny yen set himself on fire again

See the jeaned genie on his high-wire act
At the back of his mind lies a suicide pact
Poor old johnny yen set himself on fire again

See the young men itching to burn
Waiting for their own star turn
Needing danger, a war would do
If they cant let it out, theyll pick on you
Poor old johnny yen set himself on fire again

..... I'll leave it there
#30
Poor old Jonny has set him self on fire again - got me started for the day .
Hey ma is absolutely mind blowing for anyone who has not got it - go get it !!

Watch Kineval hit the seventeenth bus, you got crushed in the souvenir rush...

Now THAT takes me back a few years!!! Have some rep with regards from my mis-spent youth:-D.

Actually, In its commericalism Gold Mother (especially when it was rereleased to include Sit Down, and "baggied" up mix of Come Home) I find has dated far more than the likes of Seven or Laid! So to me are much better albums. they have stood the test of time better:whistling:

Gone? Blimey... I'm still 17 in my head! ;-)

Thanks for this blast from the past OP and reminding me of my days of mis-spent studentdom! Heat added.

Remember going to see them at Alton Towers in '92. :-D and when they filled in at the last minute at Glasto when Morrissey pulled out.

Totally agree, as a live band they can't be beat, and If I'm feeling down I always stick on Out To Get You, then She's A Star to cheer myself up!

Well, neither were you interesting I guess for just being a sheep, and just following what was fashionable at the time

I never bought a record or wore a band t shirt that I didnt like personally.

Hey Ma was best album of last year, but I'm a proper fanboy so a bit biased! Went to see em again in December quality as always. AT £2.99 these are stunning value
#40
I'm thinking seven and laid are the best albums they did. stutter and strip mine are very different from the rest but still great.

But what i really want is One Man Clapping. I had a copy on tape years ago and copied over it by mistake. One of the concerts i saw them ata few years back played a song from it 'sandman' i think. anyhoo i'd love another copy of that album...
