Putting a heavy ball inside a jamjar and shaking it hard enough to crush things like spices would be really rather dangerous. :roll:

I can confirm that these are total rubbish.

Pestle & Mortar from Ikea is the way.

My housemate has one - uses it all the time and swears by it! Not that good at cooking myself, but I will vote hot as my housemate loves hers and paid £20 for it when it first came out! Maybe it is because she paid £20 for it that she makes sure she uses it so much!
