Best French films to watch..................

In Jean De Florettes an old man and his only remaining relative in a rural French village cast their covetous eyes on an adjoining vacant property. They need its spring water for growing their flowers, so are dismayed to hear the man who has inherited it is moving in. They block up the spring and watch as their new neighbour tries to keep his crops watered from wells far afield through the hot summer. Though they see his desperate efforts are breaking his health and his wife and daughter's hearts they think only of getting the water. In the sequel, Manon Des Sources, Manon (Beart) has grown into a beautiful young shepherdess living in the idyllic Provencal countryside. She determines to take revenge upon the men responsible for the death of her father in the first film.

Superb - both of them.

And yes, I know, watching subtitled movies is not an experience that is usually enjoyable - but these are the exceptions to the rule. The pace of the story, together the the acting, landscape and general atmosphere make for a very entertaining night.

I have these on video tape - and then I had to buy from USA - and had been looking for a DVD version for a while.

Thanks OP,

Two outstanding films that I paid a lot more for a few years ago. Worth the price then a steal at this price. Many with recognise the music from Jean de Florette as it was used in Stella Artois advert for a long time.

Music is Verdi's Force of Destiny overture- you won't stop it going round in your head for ever!

Two great films, try and watch them both at the same sitting (superb twist in the tail at the end).
Worth it just for as Emmanuelle Beart (Manon in the second film) is beautiful.
She actually married Daniel Auteuil (Ugolin) in real life!
