Jude Fawley is a stone mason who loves learning. Inspired by one of his teachers, he longs to go to a university. After a brief and unhappy marriage to a practical and pragmatic daughter of a pig farmer, he moves to Christminister to be closer to his beloved scholars. There he meets and falls fatally in love with his cousin, Sue Bridehead, a thoroughly modern young woman whose wit and beauty captivates him. These two lovers join in an illicit union that flouts society's convention and tragedy ensues.
