Check the respective websites for those particular models' advanced specs. They usually provide info about the type of RAM & max module capacity per slot.

Edit: Or, easier still: get on to Crucial/UK & do an online scan from those laptops. See what compatible RAM it comes up with (you may have to scroll down to get the full picture). If it says that it can support 2Gb modules of this particular type/spec or RAM in a single slot, then this will most probably be compatible . If you're still not sure, post the URL of the scan & I'll take a look & let you know.

Play were doing kingston 2Gig ram modules for £15 a wee while back.

Acccording to some forum posts I came across (but didn't go researching specifically afterwards to double check) it seems on netbooks with an extra memory slot not used (MSI Wind/Advent) you can't use 3 GB ram by adding in another 2GB to the 1GB already on (though I know 1GB+1GB as a pair does work as my Advent has this). However those with single slots which are already filled such as the Akoya (and Acer?) can have the ram switched out from 1GB to 2GB. Might be worth looking into if anyone is thinking of upgrading ram?

Edit: came across this as well

"1. Aspire One uses 945GSE chipset, which only supports a max of 2GB RAM. This explains why adding a 2GB stick ( for a total of 2.5GB ) will cause failure to boot. The chipset does not support it.

MSI Winds have the same issue, but the newer MSI wind BIOS allows the disabling of the onbard RAM, so a 2GB SODIMM RAM will give you a total of 2GB (coz the onboard RAM is disabled ), which then boots fine."

Thx, confirmed i can, so ordered 2. Should notice a difference from the current 2x512MB slots.

One question, should i install vista to gain full benefit from these?

My processor is:

# CPU Manufacturer: AuthenticAMD
# CPU Family: AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology MK-36 Model 12, Stepping 2
# CPU Speed: 1994 MHz

XP can/will/does use both cores. 64 bit OS is of no real advantage on windows unless you're a masochist or intend to use more than 3 gig of memory.

Well, it would seem you didn't (or at least you didn't do it very well). If you Google for:

Acer Aspire 5100 memory upgrade

The first results tell you what you need to know!

As for the question of upgrading XP to Vista, I wouldn't bother unless you're a) keen on Vista; b) prepared to put up with the hassle of upgrading (or are needing to do a clean re-install anyway to get a cruft free system).

XP can use (and does) use multiple cores when they're available - click Start, select Run type taskman in the box and press Enter to display the Task Manager - there you will see your two cores working away in XP...

While we're at it, using 32-bit s/w on a 64-bit processor isn't a waste - they run 32-bit software really well. The only real reason for using a 64-bit version of XP or Vista is for the larger memory address space - i.e. there's nothing to be gained unless you have more than 4GB of memory (and have 64-bit applications that need large chunks of memory) - so it's not really an issue for almost anyone in the real world (now and in the nearish future).

P.S. Am only telling you this so I don't have to refer you to Google again!

Follow my suggestion in this post (made in this thread) & you will get your answer.

If you can't run the online scanner for any reason, do it manually by selecting the appropriate items in the dropdown lists of the Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool

Yep, kind of at Crucial. These cost £25.84 delivered, & by going through Quidco you'll be getting 7% cashback - 2x1Gb PC2-5300 OR 2x1Gb PC2-6400 - confirm compatibility of latter before buying.

Yes and it won't make much difference as Mac OSX does'nt use that much system resources.

Firstly, it does. Especially leopard. Secondly, if you run things like photoshop you may see a decent speed improvement in certain operations.

For those that are asking if its compatible with X, try this site : http://www.orcalogic.co.uk/asp/default.asp .... it seems to list EVERY laptop ever made  BTW ive reserved one, but im waiting for the phone call to say they dont have any stock ....... wouldnt be the 1st time :x

... Also remember that if you are running 32bit Windows Vista it will only regonise up to 3gb.

1) Does it really matter if I compare compatibility?? I heard that a laptop allowing only PC2-5300 can accept PC2-6400 flawlessly (just that it will run at the lower speed).

2) Also, is it better for PC2-5300 at CL5 or PC2-6400 at CL6 (assuming both compatible)??

Thanks!!
