I know you can no longer get cashback, but does anyone know if it is still possible to get a free card?
I went too cooperative travel and got a euro card it is Master Card you put euros on it too use abroad or any other currency, seemingly this way is better than carrying loads of money, if you loose or it stolen Mastercard pay you back a few friends got this, it does charge if you use it for getting money but I only put on what I think I need, had to top up £30.00 to get it but this was credited too my card in euros apparently this is available at all exchange money places and a whole lot safer, as you need to take your passport when shopping, and you can put money on it all year round so you wont have to look for so much spending money when your holiday time comes hope this helps

Kalixa Pre-paid Global Travel Credit Card - Free foreign + UK Transactions £6.95

Looks like a fairly decent pre-paid global travel card. There are better cards for Euro or Dollar spending, but this looks to be the best for global travel. There are better non pre-paid out t…

Escape top-up is free in Phones 4 U stores.

If you order through Moneysupermarket you will get £5 back, when you top-up £100

Only thing is it showing your balance in € but! it calculates the value of withdrawal on daily basis - if the £ going down the money you can withdrawal going down.

So I'm thinking at getting this for travel in non-euro countries and FairFX Euro card for Euro countries. This way I also have a spare card in case of emergency (as well as my normal sterling cards). Can anyone agree whether they think this would be a good combination.

As far as I can tell the Kalixa card gives a better rate everywhere than fairFX except when you use it at a cash point. If the Kalixa card works everywhere then I will use that as my main card and keep the fairFX with a small amount of cash on it as a back up. Kalixa also has the benefit of not charging a percentage on UK transactions just in case you still have cash on it when you come back from holiday and it also has contactless payment (although I have only used that once in boots).

I tried to refer someone earlier but I can't find the referral form that they talk about on the website. Has anyone been able to find it?

The Kalixa Card loads GBP onto the card and then converts them on purchase doesn't it? Unless I have missed that you can choose to load it with Euro for example at the point of loading your cash onto it?

So you take a punt with this (like the FairFX anywhere card) that the pound will appreciate in value against other currencies before you use it, whereas withthe FairFX Euro card the exchange rate is fixed at the point of loading cash.

Anyone tried the referral scheme? To get an extra tenner? Does it work using two cards?
OK, so here is what I have found out. Kalixa was introduced in Feb 2009 (was called cactus). It has been going a few years so looks pretty solid. I don't really understand how they make any money because they are offering about 0.3 cents above the international exchange rate. I guess they must invest the money and make a profit that way. There are no fees on buying stuff abroad and if you load the card by bank transfer then there is not charge. They charge more than fairFX for cash withdrawals but their card can be used pretty much anywhere (including the UK) so if you put too much money on it you could just buy stuff when you get home. You need to use it at least once every 6 months or they will charge you £1 a month. One concerning thing that I read about these prepaid cards is that they are not covered by the FSA compensation scheme so if the company goes belly up you lose everything on the card (I guess you would become a creditor and get a small amount back).

I have gone for one with £7 TCB and will take both this, and the fairFX card to the states this summer. If you want to buy something big overseas then my advice would be to minimise the amount of time that the money was on this card just in case the worsed happens. I will probably keep about £100 on each card + some cash in case one doesn't work at a particular shop.

!!!!!!!!!!!! BAD NEWS GUYS !!!!!!!!!!I would now advice anyone to be cautious before you purchase a Kalixa card, they really messed up with me.I send my first £10, which credited to my account within the first 2 days (minus the £4.95 purchase fee).I send a further £100 a day later (17/11) and it still has not arrived. Only received a very short email to my enquiry with a request to be patient! (it's 7 days now, before was 2)TCB has NOT tracked either.I am concerned now is this company a rip off? Or has my money transfer just freaked? In any case, I am not impressed with Kalixa and I will probably stay with my old Moneybookers Mastercard (and hopefully not having to write off my £100)Edit: OK got the money today (8 days later). Kalixa said they "had some electronic booking problems with payments received". Why did they not tell me that when I asked 4 days ago? Not very happy with communication. Will see how things develop with Kalixa.

Thanks for the caution Pet2000 as i was just about to signup! but i will not now!

I kind of liked them because one had the option to upload/spend upto a max of £9000 in one year unlike 'Escape prepaid mastercard' where you can only upload/spend upto a max of £650 in one year.

Can you believe that? £650 is only £55 per month, although one can optionally upgrade to a £3000 a yr card but that too is only £250 per month!

I will keep looking for a trustworthy card i guess :(

I seriously hope that you did not discuss your PIN with anyone.

Nothing actually discussed with anyone - I got an email from them, asking me to sign in & go to the 'select PIN' page on their website; it all seemed legit. - what are you suggesting may happen?

Thanks for the info. - I signed up through TCB, & did a free bank transfer in which took a few days; they've now contacted me to register my PIN, & the card is due to be sent out.

No sign of TCB commission yet though - does anyone know how long it takes to show as tracked? I understand the payout might be some time, but would at least like to see it acknowledged, as I'm concerned that, by not having made an immediate deposit (which would have cost a % more) I've affected the cashback being linked.
