Do Karrimor still do a lifetime guarentee on their stuff (I seem to remember this from ages ago) - gives a good indicator of how long they expect stuff to last! My backpack from 14 years ago really needs replacing now...just because it looks SO old not because it has worn away at all!
#11
Can anyone recommend a backpack in the sale that is not Karrimor?
I am looking for one with a padded back that is good quality that holds around 20L.
Thanks :)
#12
They certainly do still have the lifetime guarantee.

Sports world/soccer is always listing this stuff at 70% off..

Normal price, like the closing down sales they have, but they never close down.

What I like about Sports World is that when you compare their prices, they are actually cheaper...not like the never ending closing down sales. See here for the same backpack...

Comparing the pictures on the respective websites, these are not the same packs.

The Sports World website has no information at all about this product, but I would assume that the model they are selling is one from a few years back.

I would imagine the performance it makes to you're hiking is negligable. If you don't like it I won't force you to buy one. :whistling:

It does come with a lifetime guarantee, so if you don't like the one at Sports World, it could always have 'a little accident'.

The 'closing down sale' was for the rebranding from sports soccer world to Sports world, wasn't it? That is, closing down of sports soccer world, and then re-opening up as sports world. I think I read that they were reprimanded by some body or another ovger this.

Wasn't picking Foxy, just wanted to point out that there are some differences in the design, and for all we know the later models could have improved upon the earlier ones.

Good spot anyway.

sports world sell cheap stuff cheap.

Dont be confused by Karrimor of 14-15 years ago and karrimor of today.

Mike Ashley and his empire has been buying clothing brands, such as No fear, karrimor, lonsdale, slazenger, dunlop, umbro, ocean pacific for years.

All made cheaply in far east, at the expense of quality.

Good if you after cheap sporting gear, but please remember it may be at the expense of quality.

IMHO

sounds like u work for sports world "thedriver".

Have a look at the waterproof and wind proof jackets both look really good value and with the weather as it is..........

Karrimor Lecht Wind Jacket was 59.99 now 11.99

Karrimor Cairn Wind Proof Jacket was 99.99 now 29.99

voted hot:thumbsup:

I used to work at sports world and the best time to get a "bargain" is monday mid morning...just after the price changes have been done.

Eurohike. Made in China.
Regatta. Made in the Far East.
Vango. Made in China.
Blacks. Made in China.
Lowe Alpine. Made in Vietnam.
Berghaus. Made in China.
Tatonka. Made in Vietnam.
Deuter. Made in Vietnam.
The North Face. Made in Vietnam.
Karrimor. Made in Vietnam.
And I could go on...

All taken from Rucksack kit reviews in the latest issue of Trail magazine. The argument of "Made in the far east, at the expense of quality" just doesn't hold up.

I would agree with "thedriver" about the quality of this stuff. Just because it has the Karrimor name on it, doesn't mean it can be compared to the original Karrimor brand. It's now all made under license and you get what you pay for. The items sold in Sports World can be compared to any others of the same price elsewhere - a £10 Karrimor rucksack is no better than a £10 one from Umbro/Matalan/Tesco....etc.

Sorry but that's a ridiculous statement. If I decide to sell my Teac hifi for £30, that doesn't make it the same quality as a £30 Tesco value hifi.
#26
Myh son has gone through 3 rucksacks since startign school, all Umbro, they are very poorly made, just rip at the seams.Having had my Karrimor for 20 years we bought him one for school and its superb, made to last.

Sorry, but that's a ridiculous statement. How can selling something second-hand be compared to the retail prices of goods?

thedriver is quite correct. Sports World buy up brand rights from troubled companies, and use this to badge their own (or generic) goods. The 'real' Karrimor went into receivership in 2004.

The stuff Sports World sell as Karrimor is OK IMHO, and certainly very cheap. It just doesn't compare to the Karrimor of old, but then that's probably true of Blacks, Lowe Alpine etc. too

Well I like a debate. Lets face it folks, they are all made in the far east...is that a bad thing? What makes a product made in any other part of the world any better?

I have had nothing but good experiences with Karrimor stuff (which is why I added it)
#29
I made that statement because my son has a Karrimor Spectre 20 rucksack from Sports World and it is cheap and flimsy. It's not as well made as my daughter's Eurohike from Millets, and not in the same league as the Karrimor I used to have. Also I bought a pair of Karrimor shoes for about £20 from SW - also they are nothing special, just £20 shoes with a Karrimor label on. What I am saying is that these goods are not made by the Karrimor of old - they are made under license. Sports World buys the rights to defunct brands and puts the name on whatever it wants. I'm not saying that they are not good value for money - just that you get what you pay for.
Obviously a TEAC hi fi is better than a cheap one from Tesco, but what if Tesco bought the TEAC brand name and stuck it on it's stereo - then it wouldn't be any better.

it's a shame the original Karrimor went bust, I used to go to the factory shop all the time

You missed my point, which was highlighting that just because they decide to sell the product for a cheap price, doesn't automatically bring the quality down to everything else around that price mark.

If that was the case there wouldn't be such a thing as a bargain, and this website wouldn't exist! :)
#32
The Karrimor Airspace 30 gets a Best Value award in the latest issue of Trail magazine. Not bad for something made in the Far East ;)
#33
I may be wrong, but I think Karrimor KSB is still a seperate (and respected) brand. A friend of mine who runs a Gap Year company will only buy stuff with KSB on it as he believes it is far superior to standard Karrimor gear.
#34
Cheers OP, Voted HOT, picked up the Airspace 25L at the local Chav/Sports World for £13.49.

I thought the quality of the product seemed excellent and looked a well designed/made product hence the purchase. The information had a sticker of £44.99 on too. A seperate label also attached had the 70% off price.

I must admit, I am confused about the fact that Karrimor were bought out by SW. Karrimor equipment is still sold (at full price) at loads of other retailers. Surely, if they were a load of rubbish now, they wouldn't still sell them at a premium

the Two rucksacks are indeed different models the one for £13.49 is actually the explorer airspace 25 and the one on the site is the Arete airspace 25 if anyone finds this for £13.49 I'll have one cheapest I found was £38
#37
I bought a Karrimor coat from Sportsworld For £14.99, supposedly reduced by90% (from the £149) on the label. It did not have any info on it about waterproofing etc. like an original Karrimor, but was a nice looking coat for £15 Fleeces were about £7 but were poor quality. Bought a couple of small backpacks that have been excellent. General motto - you get what you pay for.
#38
let me just clarify.

Most clothing is now made in the far east.

You can get good quality items in the far east cheap.

And you can get cheaper items also made in the far east at the expense of quality.

I work in the clothing industry, but I am not associated with sports world.

As mentioned by someone else earlier, sportsworld by troubled brand licencses and then design, source and buy the goods from the far east as cheap as they can.

Using a related company, called brands inc or ibml ( i think).

I would love to see the stuff sold at the original selling prices, but it just dosnt happen, its always at x discount at sportsworld, so the discount factor is a twist of the truth, probably had one store stock an item, in a corner for 28 days to qualify for the discount to be true.

Like I say, its cheap clothing and it does what it says on the tin, but dont think that your getting the same quality as 14 years ago.

All in my humble opinion of course.

Further, look at licencing and who owns the brand. IBML, is Mike ashleys brand licencing company, this company buys the brand and then leases it too other companies for different catergories, eg cat 25 is clothing, which may be leased to one company, and another company may have say shoes, or bags which falls under a different licence. The company leasing the brand may be buying and making quality goods, but these are not sold in sportsworld, goods sold in sports world will have been sourced by a related comapny to MA empire.
