Hi all,

Found this after clicking a link to Play's everything £5 deal I had on email this morning.

After seeing many posts on here for this it seems you can indeed use the key to update it to the latest version so to protect 3 PC's for a fiver I thought was a bargain!

From Play:

Today, threats to PCs are appearing in ever-greater numbers and diversity. Cyber criminals on the Internet are well organized and tend to target PCs with combined threats. A standalone antivirus solution is no longer enough to fully protect your PC.

Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0 is a fully integrated solution that protects your computer from all of the most common Internet threats, including viruses, hacker attacks, adware, spam and spyware.

I hope so.

Version 6 is from 2006 so if you cant update you are stuck with an old version that will be no use.

Well, even worst come to the worst and the GUI is version 6 you will be able to update the to the latest protection databases or else there would be no point in selling this at all surely

WRANING: (from memory, please check)

You can only go from version 6 to 2009, and you need 2010 for Windows 7.

I tried for a long time..... then remembered I'm a Barclays customer, so got 2010 that way.

Hmm interesting, I'd find that really harsh of Kaspersky to alienate all their pre-2010 cutomers from using it with Windows 7??

Yeah but it's still not fair to make everyone buy a new key just to be able to use it in Windows 7.

What I normally do is download the free trial of the latest version direct from kaspersky and then just use the key from the old pack.

Haven't tried with such an old version but could be worth a go.

Be careful guys: "Note: A KIS 6.0 license is not compatible with the latest version. To upgrade to KIS 2010 from KIS 6.0, please renew your license online whether your license has expired or not."

Direct quote from Kaspersky website. Guess Play.com knew about this already and hence selling them for so cheap haha

This is more than just an AV solution. Not sure if V6 has the parental control application included but if not I think you can upgrade from 6 to 7 for free and version 7 does have parental control because I use it to prevent the kids accessing certain sites.

Just got rid of MS Essentials as I have just upgraded to the Windows 7 compatible version of Virgin media's security pack. On VM's 1st scan it found 3 trojan's 2nd scan found 1 virus!!!

So as everyone keeps saying on these forums, free AV software is not all its cracked upto be... be warned, just because it says your machine is virus free, doesnt mean that it is!

Can anyone help? I downloaded the free version as being a barclays customer but has now expired and wont let me re-download. Anyone help?

thats because they only give you the first year free - then you have to pay for the subscription from the vendor itself. If you upgrade/ downgrade your account I believe you are eligible again but aside from that you will need to download another AV.

You could try the trick of MS Virtual PC and run a completely separate OS for all connections with the internet, leaving your Gaming OS free of any AV software, thus reducing any lag.
The great thing about this is that the Virtual machine is a file on your computer which is copyable, thus if you get any nasties creeping in, just replace it with a copy of the original :-)

I think you will only get help from your provider, in this case Barclay's IT support

If you want Parental Controls in Windows 7, just dowload Family Safety from Windows Live for free.
You don't need to buy internet security just for this.

Agree with the principle but gaming + lag = online gaming, meaning an internet connection is a prerequisite, rendering the virtual machine for interenet connections obsolete - sorry Tyke-Eng :).

Kaspersky 2010 has a gaming profile whereby all scheduled tasks are put on hold and scanning is kept to a bare minimum - I was running pings of 14 - 16ms to servers in the UK with Kaspersky 2010 running in gaming profile.

It is also worth noting that you can upgrade your Kaspersky to 2009 (version 9.0) from version 6.0 and all the latest databases are also used, hence your virus protection is completely up to date - direct quote from Kaspersky Webby:

Kaspersky
Upgrade to version 2009

If Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0\ Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0 is installed on your computer and you would like to upgrade to Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009\ Kaspersky Internet Security 2009, you should do the following:

Download the product distributive version 2009 from the Kaspersky Lab’s official site
Run the downloaded file
Follow the instructions of the Setup Wizard
Restart your computer
When version 2009 is installed “on top” of version 6.0 the following data are automatically saved and relocated to the new version:

Activation information
Anti-virus databases

You can't go from version 9.0 to 2010, but version 9.0 is still a very good AV and internet security suite.

Hope this helps someone.... :)

What are you on about? I don't remember many people saying free AV software isn't all it's cracked up to be, and those who do don't have a clue what they are talking about.
For instance, Avira Antivir is miles better than most AV's you have to pay for, yet year after year gets great reviews by professionals.
Not saying ALL free AV's are good, but some you have to pay for are pretty awful too.

Personally I've had nightmares with Norton and McAfee not keeping my system well enough protected, are they weren't free.
#30
I personally went for the 2009 version offer at the Works (£7.99) which has allowed me to download the 2010 version off the Kaspersky website and use the activation code from the box.

I've had problems with AVG Free, it's let viruses onto my parents laptop so many times, it clearly isn't doing it's job properly to protect the system. Hopefully Kaspersky will keep the laptop better protected.

You should be able to renew your KIS for free with Barclays - just go to following site:
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/barclays_faq

It explains how to renew your subscription and also has a link to download latest version should you want it.

I also have AS and I couldn't tell exactly what you were saying either
It would help (me) if you didn't abbreviate some of your words. Bad grammar I can cope with.

Just read your posts back to yourself before posting. You'll probably see how a long ramble of words with zero punctuation is difficult to understand.

Antivirus programs are out of date the minute you install them, they might find old virus's but new ones are released everyday (virus writers do have access to antivirus programs as well, so know how to avoid detection)

Never heard of pattern file updates?

Also fair to point out that just because your AV package thinks it has found a virus/trojan, doesn't mean it has, either. False positives are almost as annoying as missed viruses.

I think you have just made it even more confusing.
I have tried AVG Free and MS essentials, both with dissapointing results (my opinion on my setup)

the New offering from Virgin Media at the moment seems OK, and yes the viruses and Trojans were real(spraint) I did a secondary check

So I will stick with this, and before you say "oh well thats a free one as well" no it isnt, all Virgin Media users pay handsomly for their service and its included (NOT FREE)

How am I making it confusing? I merely pointed out the fact that not all free AV's are bad.
Yes, you can buy a better AV, but you can also buy worse...
#39
nyone actaully received this from Play and tried to install it?

just tried it on a clean vista install - all three activation codes fail - "activation code not correct for this product"

email to kaspersky / play in the morning I think !
