If it had a firewall it might have been good for rooted users?? (I'm guessing) but it doesn't mention having one on the play store.

I don't know you from Adam, why would I trust you?

That's a fair enough response, but that is why I posted an article from Google's chief of security who says the exact same thing. Codify has also posted a few links to back up the statement. It's a personal choice, but for me, I don't see the point.

I'm sorry, I was being picky. HUKD is full of 'experts' when it comes to anti virus of any kind. But, I was being unnecessarily pedantic and I apologise. For the record, I agree with you completely. All this will do is slow down your device, and when people like Samsung fill phones with bloatware that you can't easily remove, another resource hog is the last thing you need.

Haha no need to apologise, I know exactly what you mean. These "experts" make it hard to filter the good advice from the bad at times!

Aye, I know exactly what you mean.

go on share this then?.

spraint thanks for the updated info.
OK, I went to the ComputerBild website and read the original offer. The software was on the free CD with the May 2009 issue. You have to renew registration every quarter after registration giving you up to a year's free protection.

After you have registered a username with ComputerBild, log in HERE to obtain your new/updated reg key.

If your German is not up to much, just use translate.google.com and put the url in the box to guide you through the forms.

I use AVG Free Anti-Virus on my net book (used for years on main PC), works great, not a resource hogger. Another one is Avast Anti-Virus, which seems to be a favourite with many net book users - reliable, fast, non-hogger. I have no personal experience of the latter, but many posters on the Acer Aspire One forum recommend it
:)
Cheers, Anne

Thanks so much for the help. I used to use Avast and I only know AVG by name. I think I'll go with Avast though once my free promotional subscription (thanks HUDK!) runs out. If you wanted to disable the AVG software for a short while is it easy or does it ask for lots of authentication?

In this weeks (4th Dec 08) Micromart mag they test the major antivirus packages, and recommend Kaspersky as the best for a low powered system out of all of them. They do however give Norton a best buy, knocking points off Kaspersky for it's less user friendly interface.

That's interesting, PC Pro just knocked points off Norton Internet Security 2009 for having a less user friendly interface compared to KIS 2009.

if you use it on a less powerfull PC then it may make it seem a little sluggish.
Personally i find 2009 is a bit heavy on the default settings compared to the previous version but otherwise not bad.

i had there free trial & got rid when i ended up with a trojan on my computer bullguard sorted me out and gave me a load of software to remove the trojan so beware

I personally think Kaspersky is he best anti-virus solution around without a doubt. Different anti-virus software use different detection methods. Your case might have been bitdefender picking up a dormant trojan that Kaspersky didn't pick up or a it just been over protective and detecting a false positive which I would put my bet on. I have been using Kaspersky anti-virus for almost 4 years and I can't remember it letting anything slip through the net, it's very robust and does a great job, you defo get what you pay for.

I've had Kaspersky running on 3 pc's (having taken advantage of an offer posted here during 2007), and it's a very effective anti-virus application - providing "people" keep their dat files upto date...:whistling:

This application is the best rated (along with Checkpoint's ZoneAlarm) by both PC Security forums and the IT press.

Well, I said it in the title of my post!

The WHSMITH coupon/code still works when ordering this product.

However, i notice that the HOME2008 coupon also allows a free upgrade to the next version when it comes out ;)

Well, I'll believe that when it happens, but since both deals are 50%, I'd go for the HOME2008 coupon/code instead just in case the free upgrade proves to be true ;)

Like I say I'm not going to lecture anyone. If you are happy to pay for something you can get for free then I'm not going to try and stop you. What grates me is a lot of people are fooled into believing that you need to pay in order to fully secure your PC. A lot of these well known antivirus programs are resource hogs and bog down your PCs performance with extra features that are really not necessary. The belief that the subscription antivirus programs are somehow superior is nonsense.

If you want more than just anitvirus protection then download and install Spyware Blaster, Spybot Search and Destroy and ZoneAlarm (firewall). All of these are free and take up minimal amounts of your systems resources. I use all of the above along with AVG and never have any issues with security or PC performance (both things I'm a little obsessive with).

Just suggesting alternatives not lecturing. For a good guide on securing your PC check this out http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=25834. The guys on that forum really know what they're talking about.

Great install 101 programs to do the job that one security suite should do

www.free-av.com/

i dont think you understand the concept, you vote hot or cold for the deal on the product that is posted, if its a good price for the product, vote hot, if not, vote cold. You dont vote cold if you can get something similar for free?!?! And i doubt it actually does the same job and cover as much as this Kaspersky SUITE (not just antivirus) does
lightbulb;1893574

I thought this was incompatible with Comodo firewall?
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=comodo+kaspersky

the original query was regarding AVG & ZoneAlarm, where ZoneAlarm free is apparently unavailable for Vista, so Comodo was suggested instead...however, good advice, you don't need an extra firewall with the Kaspersky suite though:thumbsup:

Still worked for me at early morning of 12th Feb. Bought a 2 years - 3 User licensed for GBP 16.32. I consider this as a bargain.
Agent_Silver;1565049
From memory the suite has a process that scans what you are opening before you open it, I had a 6 month trial of the suite and we found our surfing sped up after I uninstalled it....the antivirus part of Kaspersky is superb, the suite can be a bit heavy handed for some.

I get the same, i tempted to remove it and either get bullguard or go for the zonealarm & AVG combo...
I played about with all the settings and still get this slowdown. In truth Mcafee was better.
It did slow my startup but at least i could open up my documents instantly instead of waiting some time.
RedOnRed;1567555
Just tried it and i'd say Zone Alarm's better.

It was in answer to being free, comodo works on vista and is free, been running it about two weeks now, (not an hour) and as it has learnt it has become much more friendly...100% at shields up...I like ZoneAlarm but can't say it is better (or worse) just different.:)

i saw some ads in a computer mag for this recently and noticed that it was only 60 days now
I've been waiting about 5 days for key now for gf's laptop...
I havn't got my key for 180 days trial. So it's expired after 30 days of use. I received an email saying that key will be emailed in a separate email. I've emailed them since I havn't heard from them, but no luck.

I've just tried this and the 30% off (PCW07) code appears to be no longer working...so debates about which product is best are somewhat wasted anyway!!!
