looks a good deal, but it isnt. the speaker package requires an amplifier to be of any use so factor that into your purchase.

i have the hd870 and i dont think i'd buy it again. the remote control is very poor, you have to press the buttons fairly hard. and you get a very bright blue light on the front panel when its on which looks cool, until you actually want to use it and then its horrible- you can se the light out the corner of your eye- i have to stick something in front of the dvd player when i use it! i'd go for the sony ns78 (i think)- similar price upscaling dvd player.

I bought some tannoy EFX 5.1surrounds the other week for £180 plus free speaker stands, then added a ONKYO SR-505 amp for £250 and I have to say that the things blows holes in my front room, we watched children of men last week and I very nearly soiled myself every time an explosion happened, my old Gale/Cambridge setup was awful by comparison.

What do you think of the SR-505? I had it shortlisted, but deep down knew I wanted the SR-605 even though it was out of my budget. Eventually I bought the Sony STR-DB1200ES.

Edit: I'm actually asking a stupid question as you're clearly very pleased with it :)

Where did you get a bundle with free stands? I'm shopping for 5.1 speakers at the moment :)

Are you happy with your Sony Amp? I got the STR-DG910 last week and im very pleased with it so far. Got it at a good price of £235 too so was well happy with that.

It's only 1 pair of stands but www.PeterTyson.co.uk, http://www.petertyson.co.uk/ebuttonz/ebz_product_pages/tannoy_efx5.1.shtml, excelent company as I've used them before (try looking on the AV forum, they get good ratings there too).

It's a very nice piece of kit, certainly better than my old Cambridge, the only problem I've had so far is trying to set up the Audyssey 2EQ system, for some reason the microphone won't pick up the sub woofer even on top whack (it does say in the manual to turn it up if the mic can't detect it). Other than that ditto to the 605, out of budget but looked like a lovely bit of kit, especially as I've now got 7.1 speakers.

Very pleased with my 1200ES (paid £279.99 about 6 months ago), my previous receiver was the Sony STR-DB1080 - which might explain why I went with the Sony rather than the Onkyo.

My only gripe at the moment is that i'm yet another casualty of a faulty Kef 2005.2 Subwoofer. It's a known manufacturing problem and I can't afford to get it fixed :x I actually begged Kef and got no response...

Over 3 months without a Sub now.

Ooh, what are the 2005.2 eggs like (apart from the sub)? I tried to find them in black but couldn't which is why I went with the Tannoys.

The Eggs are excellent, I bought them at launch for the discounted price of £600 (rrp. £800). They're an absolute steal at the £399 they were posted at recently on HUKD.

I would tend to agree with the widespread opinion that the centre isn't really strong enough. Though I still can't justify a replacement with my tight budget.

Have any of these got wireless speakers?

I'm also in the market for a 5.1 (or 7.1) setup - currently flicking through avforums, but need amp/ speakers with suffiient inputs for- PS3, Sky, Wii, 360 & EP-30. KEF speakers from play seem good enough (especially with 5% student discount), any particlar amp I should be looking at?

Thanks sonnie5:) but please be careful when posting links, yours was going through offeroftheday instead of straight to Pixmania.

How much are you looking at paying? I had a shufty at the avforums and decided on the Onkyo SR-505 for £250, it seemed to have everything I needed (except THX) and was getting product of the year in it's price range (although if you want to spend a bit extra the 605 seems to be the mutts testes).

I was eyeing up the TX NR-905 but the 605 is somewhat more cost effective bang for buck. Going to be rigged up to a Panasonic PT-AE2000E I'm buying off a friend, so looking for fair quality. Question is where better to spend the money - the better reciever or better speakers?

get over to richer sounds for some 5.1/6.1/7.1 amps and speakers

Their staff are knowledgeable but the prices can be beaten, I got my Tannoys for £50 cheaper than Richer with free stands thrown in and free delivery.

Richer do price match though, and beat by a tenner.
So pricematching the 605 at richer with Hifix makes it £330 - seems fairly economical considering the quality. £33 extra for a 5 year warranty refundable at end if not used could be handy as well.
